The 5 Best Hostels in Helsinki (Updated 2025)

"Located on the same island as the 18th-century Suomenlinna Fortress (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and a 15-minute ferry from central Helsinki, this hostel sits in a historic building that used to be a school and military barracks. It’s fairly large with common areas inside and out and a kitchenette suited more for reheating than full cooking; rooms are simple but comfortable and dorm bunks include personal outlets and reading lights. There are female-only dorms and a cozy lounge with 24/7 free coffee and tea, and because of the island location it’s quiet — ideal for a peaceful city getaway with the normally busy island to yourself in mornings and evenings." - Matthew Kepnes

Great stay at this cozy hostel. Large living room. Kitchen for guests. Very clean. Possibility to go for a walk early in the morning on the island before the tourists arrive. Well located right next to the ferry. I recommend this place to rest.

I loved to open the door to this cosy, friendly place each time I did. Very polite and helpful stuff, little lighting-chains, plants, clean facilities, interesting historical information, beautiful picture at the walls, coffee for free, nice functional kitchen. Can't wait to come back. Kiitos.

Helsinki has many places to stay in. However, this hostel takes the top spot for an one-night stay. The location, which is the most attractive aspect - near the Suomenlinna fortress. Staying here was a dream come true experience. Rooms were very clean, quiet and our room offered a sea view. Moreover, the staff is very helpful both during the delicious breakfast and during the arrival. The code did not work the first time but the staff on the support line helped us get to the hostel successfully. Kiitos for your services, we'll be happy to get back :-)

We stayed for 4 nights on our trip to Helsinki and we could not have had a better experience. The hostel is cosy, quaint and right next to the ferry stop that takes you to the mainland. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We usually avoid breakfast buffets as we find them a bit hectic but the Hostel Suomenlinna breakfast was quiet and not stressful at all. There are cute graphics everywhere that have clear and specific instructions for hostel policies, which was helpful as both me and my partner have autism. The room was beautiful, the bed was comfortable and priced very reasonably. Recommended!

The Suomenlinna ferry runs every 20min. The price of the ticket is included in the AB ticket price. The hotel staff are friendly and the food was of high quality. Rooms are standard hostel quality about 8 people per room. Sheets and towels were clean, and facilities seemed to be maintained regularly. Bathrooms could be better overall. The location is the biggest selling point here, there are amazing 360 scenic views a few steps away. In the evening, when the tourists stop arriving in large numbers, you feel a sense of tranquillity on the island. This would be a perfect place to write a book or something.

yo!! this was so cool and well worth the rate--very spacious so i imagine it doesn't get that humid hostel feel, but i went in the winter. i was worried about it being dead or creepy in the off-season but it was just straight up cool. kitchen's limited but the hostel admin is so accommodating for late-night arrivals. ferry service is like clockwork, and the little businesses around are right around the corner (though they were closed during winter nights). bathrooms separate from rooms so good privacy, and free lockers with free locks for storage outside of rooms!

Clean, peaceful simple hostel located on suomenlina island. Rooms were very basic with everything you need, curtains could be added for extra privacy. Helpful staff. Kitchen was rather small with limited storage space and cooking utensils. Only 2 showers for each gender which could be increased due to large number of guests. I visited during winter, so no breakfast was provided, but I received free filter coffee every morning which was a nice touch. Towels provided would also be a nice addition. The island itself was beautiful but taking the ferry in Central Helsinki was more challenging than expected with tickets being expensive and ferry's not being very frequent (every 30 mins or so), but a very peaceful environment with things to so (museam, shops, cafe, grocery store). Very basic but perfectly functional. I felt very safe the whole time.
