On the spur of the moment, I drove up from Brooklyn NYC for a solo Vermont ski weekend. After poking around for a place to stay, I stumbled upon the Hostel Tevere -- which turned out to be an absolute perfect fit for me.
First off, it is super close to Mad River Glen, which is definitely one of my favorite places to hit the slopes. If you're a snowboarder, then Sugarbush is also within a 10-15 minute drive. And besides, the Mad River Valley is one of the most scenic areas in all of Vermont, so why not stay there?
Second, the food is solid. I had their delicious french toast each morning and also gladly feasted on their hearty dinner fair each night. It isn't gourmet, but it is simple, filling stuff that will keep you happy.
Third, the bar scene is one of the best I've seen in the Mad River Valley. A solid group of locals effortlessly mix-in with the people staying at the hostel, and as a solo traveler it was definitely nice to have plenty of people to talk and hang out with.
Fourth, the bunk beds are super comfortable and the rooms are very clean. And after spending an evening drinking beer in the bar, it was super nice to simply head upstairs to bed then have to get in my car and drive elsewhere on icy/snowy roads.
The hostel definitely isn't a place for a romantic ski weekend with your partner, but if you're driving up with a few other ski bums who just want to ski and drink beer afterwards with some chill locals, there really is no better place to stay. Five stars!
