The 7 Best Hostels in Rome (Updated 2025)

"Situated in Trastevere, this budget-friendly hostel offers an awesome outdoor terrace, three common areas, a bar on-site, fast Wi‑Fi, AC, and a cheap buffet breakfast; bunks are basic (some top bunks lack railings) but comfortable enough, dorms don’t feel crowded, and it’s close to grocery stores and public transit." - Matthew Kepnes

It was only after arriving at the hostel that I understood the negative reviews – especially regarding the strong and unpleasant smell of urine in certain areas. Furthermore, I was surprised to discover that the hostel does not provide soap in the bathrooms as part of its policy, as I was told by the reception staff. This is a decision aimed at saving money – but it comes at the expense of the hygiene and health of the guests. The question arises: how are we expected to wash our hands after using the bathroom? This is a basic standard that is appropriate for hostels, certainly when it comes to a place that hosts travelers from all over the world. A shame and quite disgusting

We stayed one night in this well-located hotel, but we were slightly disappointed. Although the staff at check-in were very welcoming, our room had a strong smell and couldn’t really be aired out, and it was very small for eight people. Later, when we came back to sleep, we found a man sleeping in my girlfriend’s bed, and the staff couldn’t do anything except tell us to take his bed instead… Breakfast was also rather disappointing.

I recently stayed at Hostel Trastevere and overall had a very good experience. The hostel is well located, clean, and close to everything you may need. Nahuel is an excellent receptionist! His warm welcome, professionalism, and kindness made my stay so much better. He is always ready to help with a smile and gives great recommendations. Truly one of the best receptionists I have ever met – thank you, Nahuel! The rest of the staff are also kind and helpful, and the location makes it easy to explore Rome. On the other hand, the kitchen policy is not very convenient, since paying 10 euros to use it feels excessive, and there are some small details that, if improved, could really help the hostel stand out even more. In summary, it is a good place to stay in Rome, especially thanks to the great staff and the atmosphere, and with a few adjustments it could be even better.

I sprained my ankle before checking in, and the front desk staff were incredibly kind and helpful — they offered me a more accessible bed and even provided ice for my injury. The next day after check-out, I stayed in the lobby for the whole day to rest before my departure, and I truly appreciate their understanding and support. Thank you for making a difficult situation feel so much easier. 🙏

Special thank you to the kind staff that accommodated many of my extra requests as a tired traveler. All of the reception staff (there were 3 and I didn't get their names) went above and beyond for me on multiple occasions. Letting me check in early after a night train and change rooms at one point. The hostel needs some work - Firstly there needs to be hand soap in the rooms. It's gross that no one is washing their hands properly! The place also feels kind of run down and not good for socialising. The staff are all so lovely and I saw them handle so many requests from guests with patience and kindness.

The bed was very comfortable, and the front desk staff did a great job with check-in. However, there were several issues in the bathroom. Both door locks were broken, and the black privacy coverings on the shower doors were falling apart. Additionally, the shower and sink were flooded and did not drain properly. The bed frames were dusty and appeared not to have been cleaned in a long time.

Stayed at Hostel Trastevere and had a great experience. The staff was super friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with anything I needed. The location is excellent, well connected and just a short walk from the vibrant Trastevere area. As a solo traveler, I really appreciated the easy-going and social vibe. Also—a special shout-out to the fridge that chills beer perfectly, just on the edge of freezing. Couldn’t ask for better after a long day of exploring Rome. Only small downside: the rooms could use a bit of improvement—some updates or extra attention to comfort would make a big difference. Overall, still a solid and enjoyable stay. Highly recommend
