The 7 Best Hostels in Rome (Updated 2025)

"Situated in Trastevere, this budget-friendly hostel offers an awesome outdoor terrace, three common areas, a bar on-site, fast Wi‑Fi, AC, and a cheap buffet breakfast; bunks are basic (some top bunks lack railings) but comfortable enough, dorms don’t feel crowded, and it’s close to grocery stores and public transit." - Matthew Kepnes

My stay here was incredible! The receptionist Martina (who I want to highlight in this review for her friendliness and good service) accompanied us to the room, helped us carry our suitcase and helped us with every doubt. The rooms were very clean and tidy, and the best was the location that in less than 30 minutes walk you reach the Vatican, or the coliseum. Without a doubt the best hotel in relation to price-quality in all of Rome

The room was quite clean and located away from the main road, so it was very quiet. It had a single bed, which I personally found much more comfortable than a bunk bed. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and they also allowed me to store my luggage. The price was very reasonable as well. Overall, I think this is a great place to stay in Rome for a solo trip.

I genuinely enjoyed my stay here. The room was clean, the space was comfortable, and the location couldn’t be better. Everything seemed smooth when I checked in I showed my booking confirmation, and the woman at the front desk told me, “Great, looks like you’ve already paid.” No concerns, no red flags. I went on to enjoy my time. But after checking out DAYS LATER!!!! I received multiple calls and messages from the hostel claiming there had been an error, and that I hadn’t actually paid. This came as a shock not just because I was told otherwise at check-in, but because the tone of communication was accusatory and, frankly, unprofessional. Instead of calmly providing documentation or explaining the situation clearly (was it a tech glitch? human error?), I was made to feel like I was intentionally avoiding payment. There were even threats to call the police, which felt wildly out of proportion especially since I was never shown any proof that a payment failed. I’m absolutely willing to pay if a mistake was made and I communicated that but the way the situation was handled left me feeling more scammed than supported. A simple email with proper receipts and respectful dialogue would have gone a long way. This hostel has potential, but the management and communication practices need serious refinement. Either the staff is undertrained, or something shadier is going on behind the scenes. Proceed with caution. RED FLAGS RED FLAGS.

The staff is really hospitable and the people staying are also nice. However, the rooms and toilets were in very bad shape. There was no liquid soap for handwash, no toilet paper, with one toilet seat broken and blood stains on the other. One star is only for the sweet staff and their constant support.

Reception took 1 hour to check me in. First I waited 20 mins in line to talk to front desk.. Then went to my room and the bed wasn’t made (old sheets still on bed), so I had to go back to front desk and tell them. They refused to give me a new bed and instead wait another half an hr for someone to go up to my room and change my sheets. Overall just wanted to come to the hostel and check in but they make the process terrible. Hard to enjoy the experience after that.

We stayed one night in this well-located hotel, but we were slightly disappointed. Although the staff at check-in were very welcoming, our room had a strong smell and couldn’t really be aired out, and it was very small for eight people. Later, when we came back to sleep, we found a man sleeping in my girlfriend’s bed, and the staff couldn’t do anything except tell us to take his bed instead… Breakfast was also rather disappointing.

My experience here was pretty abysmal, extremely unhygienic and overpriced hostel. Me and other guests in my room found dried blood on our supposedly ‘clean’ sheets, they assigned 7 people in a 6 person dorm room (despite an extremely lengthy check in process), then tried to blame the guests for not sticking to their assigned beds (?), and the mixed gender bathroom had these showers, broken bathroom doors that didn’t shut properly or lock and no hand soap ???? Would not recommend or ever go back again.

It was only after arriving at the hostel that I understood the negative reviews – especially regarding the strong and unpleasant smell of urine in certain areas. Furthermore, I was surprised to discover that the hostel does not provide soap in the bathrooms as part of its policy, as I was told by the reception staff. This is a decision aimed at saving money – but it comes at the expense of the hygiene and health of the guests. The question arises: how are we expected to wash our hands after using the bathroom? This is a basic standard that is appropriate for hostels, certainly when it comes to a place that hosts travelers from all over the world. A shame and quite disgusting

Yelp
If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. Bed bugs found in our room and a friends room, and the solution given by the hostel was to switch our rooms and allow us to do laundry for free in their facility. If you have bed bugs (especially in rooms on different floors), they are a facility wide issue, not secluded to one area. Worst experience I've ever had.
