Me and my husband loved this place, run by a lovely family. It had so much charm and Carina and her family were so helpful and friendly (the resident cat was quite friendly too)! ||Breakfast (included) was nice with fresh fruits and bread and meat and cheese. ||We stayed in a private double room which had a comfortable double bed and a twin bunk where we put some of our stuff. It was clean, the water was hot, and the fan was a lifesaver. ||The location was a quick walk to the town center (up hills, but those are everywhere in Ouro Preto) and an easy walk downhill from the bus station to the hostel.||There's a nice little patio and the small couch in the kitchen area for hanging out and getting to know other travelers.||And you must stop by the house next door to try their amazing cachaça for free! (thanks to our host for showing us that!) it's so good you will want to buy some. And you can tour the historical house (for free) which is quite charming and interesting.|

Initially we found it quite difficult to get there as we were foolish enough to opt to walk there and it was a little difficult given that much of Ouro Preto is built around slopes with some which were very steep. Our luggage really weighed us down a little.||||Fortunately, the experienced turned once we entered through the door. There are few places in the world where you actual have access to the owners and this family run hostel was nothing short of excellent. My wife, sister and myself stayed at the 9 bed dormitory which we were lucky to have all to ourselves. ||||From the beginning, we knew we were going to have a good experience with them as they cared much about our needs. Got talking to them over breakfast and they were able to give us a good insight into Ouro Preto and Brazil in general. The items served at breakfast were all of 5 star quality. Loved the toasted bread with ham and cheese which you can't even find at many 5 star hotels. ||||Overall an outstanding experience and was a really pity we couldn't have stayed longer. Would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Ouro Preto.

We stayed in Freedom Hostel for 4 nights and had a fantastic time. We felt like part of the family and would definitely recommend staying here.||||The hostel is situated in the old slaves quarters, a 5 to 10 minute walk to the main square. It is located in an old building but has recently been converted (in fact they are still finishing off some of the rooms). This means that the place is clean and the beds are very comfortable. Most rooms have an ensuite though there are some shared bathrooms too if needed. The only downside is the cockerel next door that crows at random points throughout the night.||||Breakfast was good with a variety of fruit and amazing cakes along with bread, ham and cheese. One evening, Papa made a group of us a load of pizzas for a fraction of the cost of eating in a restaurant.||||The service we received was exceptional. Mama and Papa were keen to show us their town and the surrounding area. They were able to explain the history of the town in great detail, pass on tips of places to visit, things to see and even organised a group of us to visit the Minas do Ouro gold mine a short bus ride away, passing on the commission to us to make it cheaper.||||We really felt like part of their family like no other hostel we have stayed in and were sad to leave.

We spent a very good time in Ouro Preto thanks to the great atmosphere we had in this hostel...Freedom Hostel is very well situated in the slaves' quarters; only five minutes from the center and not far from good restaurants. Rooms are very comfortable and people are awesome ! Very nice place to stay !

A very welcoming and friendly hostel. The owners are helpful in giving recommendations for exploring the area. The hostel felt like a home away from home. The breakfast is great.
