Staff and business model, like all in the Hospitality Industry has been decimated by COVID-19 related forced facility closures due to the pandemic and public health concerns. Primary customer base of international travelers is non existent due to US border closures, and increased public health concerns by domestic travelers over shared lodging facilities and international program participation with unknown foreign nationals. Most affiliated private hostels remain open across the USA, while mandatory local closures have shuttered most HI-USA owned urban locations, and the non-profit has also been forced to sell or permanently close a third of their owned network hostels to maintain survival level cash flows as of January 1, 2021.
