On the Grid : hotbox

"They might’ve cut their teeth at James Beard award-winning chef Frank Stitt’s Bottega, but the owners of hotbox have created a dining experience that's worlds away from that beloved Birmingham institution. Operating out of an unassuming Airstream trailer tucked away on the back patio of Parkside Café, each of the delicious, reasonably priced Asian-influenced dishes—lemongrass fried chicken, pork sausage bánh mì or nam tok beef brisket—is a testament to the inventiveness, attention to detail, and respect for fresh ingredients, masterfully prepared that their white-napkin alma mater is famous for. Oh, and the hotbox burger. The hotbox burger!" - Lewis Communications

Not Asian inspired. The food was good but this is American cuisine. It was enjoyable but I selected this spot and walked here and bought multiple things because I was interested in their Asian inspired offerings. This is another example of southern chefs taking Japanese dishes and completely white washing them. I ordered the burger which was delicious but just a burger, perhaps it was not intended to be Japanese influenced. The soba bowl however was disappointing. The soba noodles were cut into small pieces which fundamentally goes against the tradition of soba noodles which should be kept long and slurped. Much harder to eat when they are cut up. Sounds silly but it’s an essential part of eating a soba dish. The chicken add on was completely unseasoned. Like zero seasoning whatsoever. Lastly, it was 50% broccoli, the tiny little freezer bag brocolli that had no flavor and tasted frozen. Come here for the vibes and a great burger but do not come here for Asian flavor cause you won’t find it - at least not in the dishes I had.

Burgers are solid, but their other items were better when they were in the original Avondale location. They take a very long time to process orders just a heads up.

This is great. Really great flavor. Firstbtime I had fried green tamato and it is awesome. Also had the chicken. Very very nice.

Atmosphere was great minus all the screaming, unsupervised children. Food was very good and the service is super neat. You order via a QR code and pick up when it is done.

Everything I’ve ever ordered has been fantastic, and the beer pairings are tasty too. Servings are quite generous. The menu changes, which is a delicious and fun way to switch things up. Definitely recommend if you’re in Bham!

My favorite place to eat in town. I’ve loved every dish I’ve had here (burger, lemongrass fried chicken, brussel sprouts, and drunken noodle). Sometimes it does take a while to get your food, though....worth the wait IMO

Really good Yaka Mein and Jambalaya rolls are huge, had a little fire pit for the outside too. Doesn't have drunken noodles anymore but it's all good 😎

Came here after a game on Saturday night 930 and they closed even though it says 10 plus they had and attitude I guess they don't want to make money

Yelp
We've been here multiple times. Of course, the best time to go is in the spring/summer. The setting/ambiance is lovely and the food quality pairs well with it. I haven't had the chance to try everything YET, but that lemongrass fried chicken is wonderful -- I'm stuck on it so maybe one day I'll venture out to another choice of meal. The service is always fantastic and they never show any unprofessionalism at all, just great service. Wasn't a fan of the burger when we split it, but it was just a basic burger so...take that how you want. The dogs, chicken, wontons are all good and will be back to try more.

Yelp
I went here for food late night when I got hungry because it is right outside of my apartment! They offer Asian fusion foods, and the ambiance is nice because of the lights and the brewery inside the building, and when the weather's nice, it feels nice to sit outside! I ordered a hotbox burger which was served after about 15 minutes of ordering, and it was pretty good! It is more of a takeout area, so the utensils are plastic. The prices of the food are also ok! The only reason that I take off a star is because they misspelled "Banh Mi" as "Bahn Mi" on their website.
