What a delightful surprise this boutique hotel was! Tucked away on a lively side street in Mongkok, the 1936 Hotel channels old-school Hong Kong charm with its Art Deco-inspired decor—think polished wooden panels, vintage ceiling fans, and those cute brass light fixtures that make you feel like you've stepped into a 1930s film noir. The rooms are compact (classic Hong Kong style), but impeccably clean and thoughtfully designed with smart storage hacks to maximize space. Our queen room had a surprisingly comfy bed with crisp linens, a rain shower that actually had hot water pressure, and even a Nespresso machine—luxuries you don't always get in this price range.Location-wise, it's unbeatable for shoppers and foodies. You're a 2-minute walk from Ladies' Market for street eats and knockoff bargains, and the MTR is just around the corner for easy jaunts to Central or TST. We grabbed dim sum at a hole-in-the-wall nearby every morning—pure bliss. The staff? Super friendly and multilingual; the front desk guy even sketched us a map to hidden dai pai dongs on request.Minor gripes: No on-site gym or pool (but who needs it with Mongkok's energy?), and the Wi-Fi lagged a tad during peak hours. Breakfast was a simple continental spread in the lobby—fresh croissants and local congee, nothing fancy but solid.Overall, if you're after an authentic, vibe-y stay without breaking the bank (around HKD 800/night), book this. It turned our 3-night whirlwind into a nostalgic highlight. Would return in a heartbeat!
