"In Minneapolis, St. Paul there was an amazing pool on the seventh floor of Hotel 340 with art deco tiling, round windows and nobody else in there. It's actually the home of the St. Paul Athletic Club."

An absolute dump. This review is for the hotel portion only. Elevators don’t work. We have to go up and down 12 flights of stairs (twice). Stairways not marked, not lit and several floors were blocked by power tools, cords etc… The rooms are very musty and dirty. Tiny sinks and toilets and rooms not stocked. Nobody who works for the hotel is there. They have a person that sits at the front desk, but they are very quick to tell you that they don’t work there. Beautiful venue, but don’t ever stay here.

The guy was grumpy that checked us in but another front desk person we met was nice. We couldn’t use a gift card to pay for our room. I booked the king room on booking.com because it was cheaper than booking with the hotel. I liked the standard room better that we got the last time we stayed. Our room had a kitchen, dishes, wine glasses and mini fridge with freezer. We stayed for winter carnival and it was a perfect location. The hotel has the top floors of the building. St. Paul athletic club has an awesome dry and wet sauna and really nice facilities. Nice free breakfast but bring your own cup/mug since they only have disposable options. They had recycling bin in the room which was a nice touch. The housekeeping staff were very nice. We love this hotel.

What a cool hotel! The way it was built is absolutely incredible. It's so beautiful. The chandeliers and the ceiling are enough to get lost in. The rooms are super old fashion as well. You literally use a metal key to lock and unlock your door so don't forget to lock it on your way out. I went with a large group of people and found that the rooms vary drastically in sizes. Sometimes the toilets are in a different part of the room than the shower, the beds are pushed up against the wall between other small obstacles, but it's an experience. It has nice televisions and nice views from the upper levels. I enjoyed my stay.

Joe (with a bow) at the front desk is an amazing person, so friendly and welcoming. I got my room upgraded for free, so that was a pretty nice bonus to my stay. The room was well-maintained for being in such an antique-looking building, the door had an actual key and lock which was quite charming. The fitness center was good-sized and clean/well-maintained. The hotel is within easy walking distance of lots of good restaurants. Overall, the whole experience was probably one of the best I've ever had at a hotel, would definitely stay here again.

This hotel has FANTASTIC service! The ladies at the front desk were so friendly and went above and beyond to help us when we were trying to get around the area. We booked a room very last minute due to a snowstorm and we were so thankful we did! The experience was well worth it. The lighting is more dim than most hotels but it only adds to the almost castle feel that accompanies the dark wood and beautiful architecture of the building. Our room was smaller than most but the character of it surpasses any hotel I've stayed in in the past. Our room had a kitchenette, complete with basic dishes and silverware, and even a cute reading nook (which feeds my inner book nerd). Breakfast was great and walking through the fitness club is a must. I would recommend this place to anyone. Best hotel I've stayed in.

I had one of the efficiency rooms and it was perfect for one person if you don't need a lot of space. Plenty of dressers for clothes but no closet for hanging a lot of things. There are a few coat hooks for hanging. The room and linens were all clean and orderly. Service was good. The building is older and is very stylish and that carries over to the rooms, even though they have been refurbished, they maintain that classic feel.

Google
So charming! Love the character of the old building. We stayed two nights in December and had a good time. I just thought there were a few things they could have done a little better. The cover for the bathroom light was missing. Our key cards didn't ever work when they locked the doors at night so we always had to buzz the front desk to get in. The fridge was not cold. I turned it up, but it didn't get any colder. The ice "machine" was a Rubbermaid wheelbarrow and was normally ice water when we wanted ice - please spend a little money on a machine! Some of the rooms are very small and some are pretty big. The lobby is beautiful and there's a nice sitting area on the 10th floor.

Some of our friends from out of town were staying here for a night and my boyfriend and I dropped by and hung out with them in their room for a couple hours. The place was lovely and the ambiance was beautiful. The staff members at the front entrance were very courteous and professional. I also love the convenient location of this hotel. Next time we're looking to book a room in downtown St Paul, we'll definitely try to book a room here.

Yelp
At first look, walking into the historic building it feel extravagant and almost like you can feel the history in the atmosphere. The reception was super nice and everyone was respectful. But entering our hotel room, itself is not great. There are chipped paint on the walls and the windows. The bed room is tiny, just big enough for a queen bed and some walking room. The bathroom is also tiny with a walk-in shower. I just assume it's what happens when you keep the original structure of a building built in 1917 to cater to "super size me" America. But that's ok. What you REALLY pay for is having access to the entire Saint Paul Athletic Club. I think that itself is worth the stay. ...unless you don't work out then I think there would be other problems... :\ Things they could improve on would be the continental breakfast and house keeping. The breakfast isn't even as good as what you'd get at a chain hotel like Best Western. The sheets were musty smelling and the house keeping lady gave us some major 'tude when we told her and even mocking our term "musty" as she walked away. And I found a q-tip in the sitting room.

Yelp
This hotel is so cute. I had a very pleasant experience. Old school charm and good customer service. They actually give you real keys unlike the cards you get at other hotels. This of course came with a cost because if you loose the key the cost is about $150 bucks fee. My room was so elegant and very fitting for a staycation. The only thing I noticed is that the walls are a bit thin so the sound does travel. Luckily, I had some mature neighbors and didn't have to worry. I took advantage of the SPAC- Saint Paul Athletic Club facilities while I was there- Sauna, Steam room, and pool. Sad they didn't have a hot tub, but I made due. This is a hotel that you can go to and be very low key. They don't have a restaurant on site but their continental breakfast is a great deal. Everything was fresh. They did a great job with fully stacking the food and providing an array of options. Would highly reccommend and would return.

Yelp
Very beautiful old hotel. Love the mail chute so primitive. Unfortunately our room, my birthdate, 1217 is tiny. Well not the room But the bed was tiny and shoved in between two walls making me fell claustrophobic! I should of taken a photo but I was so tired I just tried to rest. It was definitely not for two grown adults. I had a hard time getting in and out of bed because they also had a huge nightstand positioned on the one side so you basically had to scooch to the bottom of bed to get out. It was clean room. Continental breakfast was fine. Lots of toiletries and kitchen sink and kurig to make coffee. I think it also had a small fridge. I would have preferred a larger bed and not all the other stuff. Sleep and convince of the green line is the only reason why we stayed here. Love the beautiful door to get to the walkway system from the 2nd floor. Too cool. The pool and gym are awesome as well. Adult only so you don't need to worry about kids slashing and crying.

Yelp
Quirky older hotel. I like. Weird issue: they have a bar but you need to go to front desk to get one of them to bartend. Weird but they are nice. Beautiful lobby and fitness facilities. Keys. Real keys. Beautiful ballroom for our conference. Overall great experience.

L W.

Yelp
This has been a nice place to stay. If you like working out it's really good for you. This used to be an athletic club. There is still a gym here. The rooms are clean and the staff is nice. It's connected to the city over walks.

Yelp
I had no expectations beyond a clean room in an historical setting. Mission accomplished. Hotel 340 oozes history. Beginning with the lobby, a setting right out of a "roaring 20s" picture, the check-in desk in the corner is unobtrusive and doesn't detract from the stunning setting. The huge fireplace, the grand piano, the dark wood, the open balcony-style second floor, all evoke another era. Above one of the elevator doors is the arrow that shows the elevator's movement between floors as you wait for it to get back to the lobby. Hotel 340 is also confusing. The lobby is on the main floor, but the hotel rooms are on the 10th, 11th, 12th floors. If you're coming in from the skyway, it's not very well marked. It's also not clear which parking deck is associated with the hotel (it's the Capital City garage), but if you find a spot to park on the street and then check-in, they'll direct you. The parking fee is discounted and includes unlimited in/out access for guests. There are several room styles in Hotel 340. All maintain the historical feel, although with a few modern-day conveniences. Knowing I wasn't going to be spending a lot of time in my room, I opted for the efficiency. And that's what it was. The bed, a double, took up most of the floor space. A replica armoire provided a spot for clothing, the desk on the other side of the room held a large screen TV and satellite receiver. There was a small refrigerator, a keurig coffee maker and two bottles of water. Awkwardly, though, I had to unplug the refrigerator to use the coffee maker. The window, probably not part of the updated decor, leaked cold air. St. Paul in November and a little cold air go hand-in-hand, but require an extra blanket. The lobby area of the 10th floor has two large lounge areas to appease any claustrophobia from the small rooms, and are a nice place to chat with other guests. The St. Paul Athletic Club is at your disposal, with a $10/day added charge. It's worth it unless you prefer mall-walking the skyway for free. Hotel 340 is unusual, quirky, and worth a stay or two.

Yelp
We stayed here for a wedding a couple of weekends ago. I was excited because the wedding was held IN the hotel so transportation wasn't required. Here's how it went: The Good: -beautiful historic hotel with a gorgeous lobby where the wedding ceremony was held. -lovely dark hardwood flooring in our room -you get a REAL key to your hotel room - no fancy shmancy key cards here! -The reception was amazing and I loved their concept of moving the wedding up a floor for each part of the event - the ceremony in the regal lobby, cocktails on the 2nd floor, and dinner and dancing on the 3rd. The food far surpassed my expectations for wedding food. The cocktail hour was held in a fabulous room decked out with tables and chairs as well as pool tables that made for a relaxed vibe. -Relatively inexpensive stay. The Bad: -the bed in our room was the single least comfortable bed in the history of beds. -the sheets on our bed were so old they were yellowing and kinda grossed me out. -the rooms are so bizarre in their setup - we had a huge tall stair that you had to climb to get to the bathroom. One of our friends had a shower in a closet. -though the real key is novel, you have to remember to lock your door every time you leave. Certainly not a deal breaker but not something I'm accustomed to in hotels. -parking is annoying, it's in a garage a moderate walk away from the hotel and the in/out privileges are based on you checking in with the garage staff every time you exit. -the front desk staff is bratty, unhelpful, and bothered by anything you ask. In all, my stay was perfectly adequate and the wedding was really beautiful, but I likely wouldn't go out of my way to stay here again.

Yelp
Steven the manager is amazing. The front desk staff is amazing. So friendly. Kind. My room is huge with 2 bathrooms!! A large sitting area and a kitchen space. I highly recommend this to anyone in the St. Paul area.

Yelp
I am so glad I chose Hotel 340. This is an old building which was converted to a hotel about 10 years ago. It has lots of character, and definitely is not a cookie cutter experience. The rooms are a little bit unconventional, but that's due to the fact that they were made to fit existing architecture. Having said that, my room has a microwave, frigerator, small kitchenette setup with sink, a few plates and silverware. The bathroom, however, is where it really gets good. Two sinks, a private cubicle for the toilet, a stand up shower with waist level spray, and a sauna! The staff has been very friendly and informative, I was able to leave my bags with the front desk, since I arrived to St. Paul on an early flight, and check in is at 3pm. They did tell me to check back around 1:30 and they would probably have something for me, but I just roamed the city until after check in time. I simply can not be any happier with the people here! Continental breakfast isn't spectacular, but it has the standards, including a Belgian Waffle maker. Plus there is a large selection of drinks, juices, milk, in a refrigerator in regular size cartons, so you can pour a glass. Cereal, bagels, fresh fruit, muffins, Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches to be microwaved, also breakfast burritos which are not store bought! Full use of the 5 floors of gym equipment, as the St. Paul Athletics Club is in the same building. The light rail is steps away, (Central station on the green line) I am writing this review as I await my laundry to finish, in the guest laundry, which is free, including free Tide detergent. Two bottles of water next to the ice bucket every time the room is made up, an assortment of complimentary shampoos and lotions I haven't paid much attention to, except to note it is extensive, and I feel like this hotel just gets it. I'm not being nickel and dimed for the little conveniences. Speaking of money, I checked in on a Wednesday and I'm leaving on a Saturday, cost was $340ish. Not bad at all! (Booked 2 weeks in advance through BJ's travel) My only complaints are the heater/air conditioning unit is extremely loud, but maintenance was literally discussing it with the front desk as I walked up. Also, my room is on an inside wall, so my view is of the windows of the hotel's other rooms. If you want all the conveniences you're used to from the Hilton, with a side of character and charm, give 340 a shot!

Aloy M.

Yelp
Really solid hotel that has a lot of charm in my opinion. You can tell that this is a older hotel, but all the rooms are very well renovated. If you're a big fan of charm and older style hotels, then this is the place for you. For me, however, I'm a fan of modern and sleek, but I can still appreciate something like this hotel. Was only here for one night, but I have nothing to complain about except the price. The room I had I believe was the cheapest one available but still ran $110 and was quite small. If I come back to Minnesota, I would be open to staying again. The location itself is pretty unbeatable considering everything is around it and available by skywalk.

Yelp
I had an evening event at this building and decided to stay here to keep things simple. I stayed here in early November/ There were a few comments in other reviews that were not true on may stay so I will address them here: 1.) Parking today is easy and convenient. They provided parking across the street in a skyway connected garage. It was $17/day with full in/out privileges. 2.) Many have discussed the use of the Athletic Club. It is indeed outstanding. What I found different is that there was no additional fee for its use. A prior reviewer mentioned a $10 fee which is no longer charge. They also offer studio classes. There is not a charge for any of them except FUSION. The FUSION class is a $15/charge. It was an excellent high intensity and quick workout. 3.) Rooms are old but not old in a creepy or icky way but more in a classic and retro way. As many have mentioned, my room was small but it had pretty hardwood floors, lots of closet/armoire space, a nice pedestal sink, walk-in shower, and large flat screen TV. 4.) The downsides to the rooms--electrical outlets are not well placed for charging. I didn't get housekeeping which wasn't a big deal for a two night stay. They left plenty of towels. 5.) It wasn't cold out when I was staying there so I cannot comment on the cold air coming in through the windows. But the HVAC seemed to work well when I was staying there. The WIFI was not great but that is often true of hotels--they just don't have adequate bandwidth. I stay at a lot of Twin Cities hotels and this is one of the better values. If workout space is important to you, this is one of the best values for lodging I've found. Front desk was helpful and pleasant. Will definitely stay here again.

Paula L.

Yelp
A fine old hotel! Other reviewers have remarked on the small rooms, but my room was huge. A bit inconvenient, since the bathroom was as far away from the bed as possible. And the windows looked out on the windows of the rooms around the corner; no sunlight could get in. I felt it strange that I was asked if I wanted housekeeping services. The breakfast was pathetic. The bread & croissants were stale, though they did have breakfast burritos you could nuke for yourself. And there was some fresh fruit.

Emily V.

Yelp
Absolutely love this hotel. I stayed for 10 days in the king room and honestly I never want to leave! Such a beautiful and comfortable room. Todd at the front desk was so friendly and helpful. My only gripe is that I did not find the staff working the continental breakfast friendly. The lady working was on her phone yelling the whole time and had the waffle maker shut off and cleaned up 30 minutes before breakfast ended. But honestly, other than that, perfect stay.

David H.

Yelp
I stayed here one night for a MN Wild game and had a great room. Plenty of space but I did see a few others and there rooms were very tiny. I had no issues at all. Its a bit old fashion having a regular key for the door. The bar was nice. Front desk staff helpful and friendly. The parking over the road was close but was interesting stepping over several dozen homeless people sleeping in the corridor on the way to my car at 6am.

Yelp
I made a reservation a month ago for a trade show, when I arrived to check in I was told that my reservation was cancelled. They first told me I cancelled the room, then they stated they cancelled it for over booking. then they tried to tell me that they contacted me, and then claimed they contacted the booking company. ALL LIES. The best part was when they told me they could get me a room at the Doubletree, because they just had someone leave the Doubletree to stay at their hotel...HUH??? you claim you cancelled my room, yet you gave a room to someone from the Doubletree. BTW, no vacancies at the Doubletree. I told them that this was Bullshit in a calm voice and they told me to leave the Hotel for swearing...can't make this up! as for the Hotel lobby which is all I saw, dark, dingy and sketchy. DO NOT BOOK !

Chris W.

Yelp
My wife had stayed here previously so we booked a room for the night after a Wild game. The best thing I can say is the front desk staff gave great directions to the parking ramp. It's a cool old building that shares space with the St. Paul Athletic Club. This place still uses keys. Small room, had to squeeze between tv and the bedpost to get to my side of the bed. Tiny bathroom. Shower ran out of hot water before I took my 6 minute shower. Free continental breakfast was brutal. It looked like it was set out and was left unattended until. Losing time. No coffee. I just want a free cup of coffee. I would rather stay at the Holiday Inn across from Xcel.

Yelp
Hotel 340 is truly a hidden gem in St Paul. It has all the granduer of the Landmark Center, but on a slightly smaller scale. The ballroom is amazingly gorgeous. They have had a lot of employee turnover and are apparently owned by a company that doesn't need business, so it often is empty. However, they are remodeling slowly and the hotel has quite a bit of charm. I have rented rooms a couple times from Hotel 340 and recently hosted my entire family for Thanksgiving there. It is perfect for large groups because there is a nice common living area that can easily handle 20 people. The breakfast is good, the pricing is fabulous for downtown. The walls are pretty thin, but the ambiance of the rooms is lovely. It feels very European in styling, even though the kitchen finishes are fairly cheap. The wood floors, posted beds and vintage styled bathrooms are wonderful. I love that each room is a tad different, some with living areas that are downright charming, and they all have nice tvs. Once the pool and gym are remodeled, that will also be a nice addition. It is VERY hard to make a reservation, with front desk people telling you they'll call you right back and then never following through. There is no website to research the hotel and they go through managers quickly (we had three different managers in just the few months we set up the Thanksgiving trip). So you have to be very clear with your wishes and expect something to get messed up. But they are also good at making it up to you. Now that they have Andy, he seems to be with it and getting the hotel back in shape. Hopefully they'll start hiring some pros to run the place.

Yelp
Surprised that Queen Deluxe room was smaller than I envisioned. Bed very comfortable, room clean and quaint, very quiet. Breakfast though quite bad...had to nuke breakfast sandwiches and portions we're limited. Athletic club very nice, with basic access. However, paid non-member rates for massage.

Kathie A.

Yelp
Our group stayed recently while in St. Paul for a convention, upon our departing we reserved for next year, we appreciated the room/accommodations for 5 people, slept the best nights of sleep in a hotel I have had in forever. It was quiet, the access to the St. Paul Athletic Club was a huge bonus, next year will explore more. the building is historic, quaint, beautiful, great morning breakfast included, obviously we will be back...

Marc B.

Yelp
I stayed here for one night when in St Paul for work. I needed a place that was downtown and cheap. When I called to check on reservations, I told the girl working that I'd take whatever was cheapest as it was just for one night. She suggested the "Effeciency room" for $90. She warned me it was very small and so I knew what I was getting into. Small is right. Wow. So...you open the door and are met by a narrow hallway leading to a room about 10x12 . The bathroom is a door off the narrow hallway and up two steps (great for smashing toes in the middle of the night) The bathroom had a sink, toilet and shower (I was warned about no tub), the room..well...it had a twin bed and a night stand. On the wall across from the bed was a TV. It also had a small fridge, coffee maker and microwave. The place was so small I could nearly lay on the bed, stretch out my arms and touch both walls. The room was on the 10th floor and the single window overlooked a rooftop and did provide a good view of the state capitol. Sounds awful...BUT...I had been warned the place was small, and for the space they had to work with, and for what I needed, it was nice. Hardwood floors with a rug, tastefully furnished, crown molding, it was a *nice room*! For one person, namely me, it was fine. My only gripe was the air conditioner barely worked- To be fair, it was boiling hot and disgustingly humid outside that day and the little air conditioner just couldn't keep up. Being on the 10th floor didn't help. I spent a very uncomfortable night tossing and turning in a hot room. Again, my expectations are realistic, this is an old building and we were 10 stories up. In the morning I told the front desk clerk about the a/c and he was very helpful and concerned- he offered to comp my room but I was getting reimbursed from my work so it didn't matter. He also commented that as the coming day was supposed to be just as hot, if not hotter, he would make sure no one else used the room until the a/c could be looked at. I was impressed by his concern. Other good points- they let me check in 3 hours early because no one had my room the night before, and the satellite TV was nice. I beat the heat that evening by getting some off-sale beer, laying in bed and watching a Simpsons marathon. .Also free wi-fi and a very nice continental breakfast complete with make your own waffles. Access to the downtown skyway is nice and the doors are locked at 8PM for the safety of guests. There are a lot of good eating and dining places within walking distance, and also, this is a *beautiful* old building. They have tried very hard to keep the vintage look, with lots of dark wood, high ceilings, brass, the front lobby is breathtaking. Also my floor had a couple of what I'd call "reading lounges" with couches, lamps and bookcases of antique books. It's like stepping back in time to 1917 when the building was first built. 4 stars instead of 5 because of the hot room but I will be back- I loved this place!! Next time I'll bring the wife and pay the extra money for an actual room. James at the front desk- thanks for all the help and concern, your employer can be proud to have you on staff..

Sonja R.

Yelp
This hotel has such potential but lacks vitality and good customer service. So many things to report but feel the beauty and history of the place KIND of makes up for all the negatives. Definitely wouldn't stay here again unless MAJOR things are done to revamp and restore this place to the historic and beautiful hotel it once was and can be again.

Christine N.

Yelp
Worst experience of my life. Flew in for a business trip and booked my room weeks in advance and I land at midnight and they claim that "someone" canceled my room. It also happened to be the night of a concert downtown... hmm wonder if they gave my room away? They were rude and not accommodating at all even though I showed them my confirmation number and booking number. Never stay here.

R W.

Yelp
This isn't a chain, it is so much better. Here are the basics: Friendly helpful staff. The pool is gorgeous. The workout room is huge. Clean fluffy towels, clean fresh robes, clean chrome and mirrors! NO Carpet in the room! Yay Beer and wine bar on sight WiFi available Well lit room The vibe is old-world luxury. This building is full of history and charm. Decor includes black and white photos of days gone by, which are so appropriate. Nothing is hollow-core, less noise! Walls and doors are solid, lending to the most quiet hotel I have ever experienced. We had a standard king room, with plenty of room including a sitting area, and a kitchenette containing a Kerig, a toaster, real dishes & silverware, a refrigerator and a sink. The breakfast area has plenty of seating and space. It was a very nice way to start the day. No maneuvering, with juice and coffee bumping into other guests or being bumped into. And a very fair price. So much more than an cookie cutter hotel chain. This is my Go To in Saint Paul without a doubt!

Yelp
Beautiful Hotel!! The Rooms where Fabulous, The service was Great! I was there two nights, Very Clean, lots of History and Charm. Just wish the Bar was opened more often, We where able to get the front desk To get us Wine she was Amazing and Sweet. Her shift ended and the next person mail said it was closed do to he didn't know how to run the POS system for ringing us up that was a bummer because there was a lot of other guests there that would have stayed and had a few drinks they lost money on that one but other than that everything was excellent.

Yelp
I could not believe the historic charm this hotel has. From the lobby, to the elevators, to my room, I felt like I was in the 1920s. I stayed in an efficiency room which was really all i needed since I was alone... it was VERY affordable. Its a tight fit, but enough room for a desk, HUGE flat screen tv and everything else needed. Vintage stand up shower with plenty of room, beautiful crown moldings and every expected amenity. I was treated very nice by the staff and the continental breakfast was great (waffles, juice, muffins, sliced fruit, yogurt, coffee, etc). It was truly a pleasure to go back in time with the surroundings, but enjoy all the modern conveniences of a nice hotel. This building also houses the St. Paul athletic club which takes up a few floors. You get to workout free there with your visit. There is also immediate access to the skywalk which i had to use since it was 0 degrees outside. I will absolutely be staying here again the next time i visit St. Paul.

Sara A.

Yelp
This is a very unique hotel. When we arrived the girl at the front desk was very friendly. She greeted me & then handed me a key. An ACTUAL key! The lobby of this hotel is spectacular. Absolutely beautiful & the music playing made you feel like you were back in time to the 40's. The room was good sized & the bed was comfortable. They have rooms with 2 beds & 2 bathrooms. That's great when you are traveling with teenage girls. Just a couple of things that housekeeping missed. There was a water bottle under the bed & another wedged between the wall & bed. There was an icky washcloth hanging on the shower curtain rod. It was hard & crusty like someone hung it there & it had been there for a few days. The best part about this hotel is that it is connected to the skywalk. If you are going to an event at the excel center you don't even have to go outside if you don't want to. We stayed in January so that was a huge plus. The free breakfast was typical for hotel but still good. We will stay here again & if not for the housekeeping issues I would have given a 5.

Yelp
You know that clichéd dream of moving to NYC and living in a tiny but adorable walk up? But in reality you will end up with a closet sized apartment infested with rats? THIS. THIS HOTEL IS THE EMBODIMENT OF THAT DREAM. It's adorable. It's historic. It's homey and comfortable. Seriously, can I just move in? It has everything I need, including a kitchenette and a comfy chair with books. Only downside is that there is no on-site parking. I think I'm ok parking on the street, but we will see in the morning. Also no restaurant or shop on site and options in the neighborhood are limited. But...I will pack a lunch and come again! ETA: once the honeymoon stage wore off I started to see some small housekeeping issues. The half and half in my coffee bar was expired (which I discovered after pouring it into my coffee and seeing it curdle). I removed my bag of grapes from the mini fridge to find a used (?) toothpick (NOT MINE) stuck to the bottom. And, there was an empty pill pack next to the garbage in the bathroom. So, housekeeping needs to step it up a notch--otherwise, everything was great. I will still come back for sure.

Yelp
Really disappointed in my stay here. The building is historic and full of charm, and the front desk staff were charming so my hopes were high. But ultimately I left feeling that I'd payed four-star hotel prices for a stay at a bad Holiday Inn. So many little things piled up over the course of my stay. A broken TV, expired creamer in my room, moldy shower curtain, terrible pillows and linens that should have been replaced years ago, a ten dollar per day charge to use the exercise facilities, and honestly probably the worst continental breakfast I've ever experienced (which is saying a lot for someone who travels 6-8 times a year). Nothing like walking into a dark, cavernous hotel bar converted into a temporary breakfast space to find a floor covered in Cheerios and coffee and not a staff member in sight. If you enjoy donuts, cheese danishes and those gimmicky make-your-own-waffle machines you'll be fine, but if you were hoping for something vaguely healthy you're out of luck. The location was convenient and like I said, the building is amazing, but I wouldn't stay here again.

Yelp
We used Hotel 340 as one of our hotel wedding blocks (not on site) because we had heard it was a beautiful and historic boutique hotel, was in close proximity to our wedding, and was connected to the St. Paul Athletic Club. Unfortunately, we began to regret our decision to stay there ourselves before/after our wedding, and ultimately embarrassed we had made this recommendation to our guests. We were put in contact with a single employee to take care of our block and reservations, who deemed herself almost completely inept of her job. From the start, she would take upwards of 2 weeks to respond to emails, and after (finally) putting together our block contract, she had not only misspelled my fiance's name but used the wrong name entirely and had to start over. We heard from multiple guests that she had similarily poor communication with them when they'd tried to book their stays, and several guests did not ever get onto our room block list - making it harder work on our end in the final weeks before the wedding to make sure everyone was accounted for. We hoped that all our challenges were due to just this single employee, and were thankful when the manager caught wind and took over a week before the big day. However, we were left underwhelmed by the mediocre rooms, mediocre amenities, and an overall underwhelming establishment. Our "wedding suite" was smaller than some of our single guests' rooms, we could barely fit in our bathroom, we had no closet but only a small armoire that was too short for some of our clothes to hang, and no hooks or storage otherwise. Our post-wedding room was unfortunately located immediately adjacent to our guests, so with the paper walls made for unfortunate jokes and our awkwardly feeling like we had to keep quiet on our wedding night. Even the included breakfast was subpar - a sad display or stale looking bagels and breads, oatmeal with the consistency of glue, and a collection of grossly bruised apples and unripened bananas. Oh and to top it all off, although we acknowledge this is not the hotel's responsibility - our vehicle was broken into while parked overnight in the affiliated parking ramp around the corner. Bottom line: would. not. recommend.

Yelp
Noisy heat unit which I had to run to drown out the clanging and announcements from the light rail station. Not great neighborhood no amenities except athletic club. Useless slow WiFi Nice old building.

Yelp
I was supposed to stay at Hotel 340, but when I arrived around 2am (I gave them advance notice) I was locked out of the building. The buzzer and phone number rang and rang (voicemail was full), but due to a malfunction with their phone system, no one ever picked up. After 10 minutes banging on the doors and repeatedly calling I stayed elsewhere. I followed up with the General Manager and he promptly responded and has addressed my issue quite well. I was very happy with his response and his level of concern for this distressing situation. However, it is still a big issue that I was locked out in the first place! Hopefully their phone system is in working order now.

Yelp
I came down to st paul, and actually booked a room at the Holiday Inn for the MN wild game. But when I got there, they over booked and I had no room... so after calling a few places I found the hotel 340. They gave me a discount price for what had happened. When I pulled up, there is no on site parking which I don't like paying to park but it happens, then when I checked in the staff was excellent! But my room was on the farthest end of the building down a one person hallway granted it was a efficient room since we were only gonna be in the room for a few hours... gave me that Erie feeling. But the room was very clean, had a nice flat screen TV but really no where to sit except the bed.. Also, they need to mark the sky ways a little better. I got lost going to the Excel and coming back to 340.. I will stay here again just except very small rooms!

Yelp
We love historic buildings and Hotel 340 satisfied us with its beautiful fireplace, clock, and breakfast area. The elevator has the old manual hands to indicate the floor level. Our room had its own library build into the wall. When you stay here you may feel you are apart of preserving history.

Yelp
Not sure how this hotel can stay in business. No working bar or restaurant. Noisy maids in hallways. Two stars for cleanliness and historic architecture.

Yelp
We were in one of their king suites. Not your typical suite layout. This appears to be kludged out of a space that wasn't originally intended to be a hotel. I have no idea where those pictures came from on their website. Our room was nothing like that. When you enter the room, you have a space with the kitchenette and several drawers and cupboards for storing your folded items. No seating area. And an armoire. To the right of that is what used to be a closet that they transformed into a washroom (no shower). If you go to the left after you enter the room you'll go into the sleeping area which also includes a small work desk and an upholstered chair. Going past the sleeping area you will find the shower, which they also converted out of a closet. This is critical because the bath towels are in the washroom on the opposite side of the suite. You need to plan ahead if want to use a towel after your shower. The loose cables hanging beneath the flat screen TV on the wall look sloppy. The cheap mini-blinds remind me of my first apartment. We could hear the light rail from our room. That wasn't really a problem for us but some might be sensitive to it. There was a creepy creaking sound that was probably from the room above us. Probably just door hinges that needed oil. The armoire is so short that you couldn't even hang a shirt without it bending. Wi-Fi was around 7 or 8 Mbps download. I've seen a lot worse in hotels. Finding the hotel entrance will be your first challenge if you park in the recommended lot. The person at the front desk was pleasant. We asked about the bar. She said she'd take us there as she was also the bartender. The bar is small. No one else was there. We took advantage of the free continental breakfast the next morning. Pretty typical fare (including the obligatory waffle maker.) They only had de-caf. When a worker finally came around, it was pointed out that the regular coffee was empty. She was going to get some more but we didn't see her again before we left. My simple reaction to this quirky hotel is "over-priced.

Yelp
This place is one sloppy joint. Completely overpriced. I really hated this hotel.

Yelp
Gorgeous wedding venue, spotless hotel rooms, wonderful staff and conveniently located. They graciously catered to all of our needs - highly recommend if you're looking for a true St Paul experience!

Yelp
This hotel is beyond disappointing. They threw a nice bed and some robes in an old, junky room and that's it. The website promises that most rooms have city views; ours looks into an air shaft. When I asked for another room the desk clerk told me that the room we are in has the nicest bathroom in the hotel. We looked at the other room he offered and he is right, the bath was worse and had the same view. So we stayed in the first room. It has an ironing board leaning against the wall, chipped paint, awkward layout and due to the air shaft view, is very dark. The lamps are inadequate so we have to use the glaring overheads. We do have two baths: one with a handicap pull down bench, but it is not designed for a wheelchair. It does have a newer jacuzzi tub but everything else is 1970s vintage or earlier, and not in a good way. The half bath is gigantic but reminds me of a hospital shower room. Tile in both baths as high as my head. Very institutional. The art work is a mish mash of stuff you might buy at Marshall's for your bathroom, but there is no artwork or decor of any kind in the bathrooms. They just threw a bunch of things on the wall. I thought I was booking a historic, fun boutique hotel for a romantic weekend. I got something far from that. I stay in lots of hotels for my work and am not a complainer. I have never asked to switch rooms before in my life, so that gives you an idea how disappointed I am.

Yelp
A beautiful hotel in a historic building. Connected to the skywalk system and a parking lot. The Capital City Parking ramp is an extra cost but it is discounted for Hotel 340 guests. We definitely will stay here again and hopefully have more time to explore the Hotel and St Paul Fitness Center. Walking distance to Excel Center, River Center, Ordway, George Latimer Central Library, and many other places in St Paul.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel! Loved the Christmas decor right when you walked it.. super cozy. The staff was super friendly and helpful! The bar tender was a 5 star guy himself. Would definitely stay again!

Yelp
We got last minute reservations to stay at Hotel 340 and it was a great experience. Andy who checked us in was very nice. The lobby of the hotel is grand. The rooms are all on the upper floors and it appears the building was retrofitted to accommodate the rooms. The hall carpet is a little worn but no big deal. The room we had (2 bed/2 bath suite) was super for the price. We used the two bathrooms when the four of us were getting ready to head out to SantaCon - who would have thought something like that would come in so handy at a hotel. The rooms are nice - hard wood floors, a king bed and regular bed that face each other across the room, a really nice kitchenette, and the bathrooms were sparkling. The beds were really comfortable. The location is great too - just a couple blocks from the river, ordway, lowertown, etc. We didn't have too much interaction with staff but Andy was great at checking us in - really friendly and personable. Someone else checked us out and he was great too. We met a third person coming in from the pub crawl but I don't really remember too much about that so can't comment. :-) What I liked best about this hotel is that it isn't a chain. If you want the sameness that a chain can give you - head over to the holiday inn. If you want something a little more unique that's not the cookie cutter experience, give Hotel 340 a try.

Yelp
It's not just historic - it has a funky soul. I loved staying at this hotel - every room is different - baroque and modern furniture, strange room layouts (I saw 3 different spaces - all neat). Guests congregate in the common areas on each floor and share conversation (we were there when a wedding party occupied several rooms). Sumptuous, antique style bathroom with iffy water pressure (it's an old building). The front desk staff loves to clue you in on cool local stuff, and they ran upstairs to bang on the door of a guest who was about to oversleep through her plane! If you are expecting a chain hotel experience, you will be disappointed. But if you want to discover something unusual and lovingly presented, you will enjoy Hotel 340.

Yelp
Half the price of other St Paul and Minneapolis hotels. Hardwood floors. Use the health club on the 5th floor. Skywalk everywhere. Rent a MN Nice bike nearby. Take the #54 bus to MSP for $1.75 off peak. Free breakfast. Great beds. Espresso coffee makers in every room. A steal. Did I mention the friendly staff?

Yelp
I dig this place. I stayed twice last month. First in an economy room. It was very small and basic, but in a great location, clean and comfortable. The second time was in a double king suite, which also had two bathrooms, lots of counter space, and a microwave & toaster. The self serve breakfast includes waffles, fruit, yogurt, cereal, juices, granola bars, hb eggs, bagels, muffins and breads & stuff. Not too shabby. Staff was friendly enough, but we were accidentley sent to our room before it was cleaned, and had to come back in half an hour. They offered to hold our stuff. No biggie. The lost key cost is pretty high ($100+) and they suggest you leave it with the front desk, but that's not as easy as it sounds, especially if you plan to return late at night. The building is really old, but nice. If you are strategic about what street you park on (some allow overnight parking certain days, and the other days are on the next closest street) you may be able to avoid the $17 ramp parking. I'll be back

Yelp
For the price, this hotel is great! I love the fact that you can use the St Paul Athletic Club for only $10 - the gym was awesome. We had a clean room and nice bed. My only complaint is that the bathrooms are so small so it's hard to get ready as a woman and it's almost too quiet at night. The staff is so nice - we had to check out early and they were so friendly about it. Most hotels would not have allowed, but we were so thankful they were so accommodating and we would stay here again!

Yelp
Nice, historic hotel. The room was very clean... and TINY. Which wouldn't have been so bad, if we knew what we were expecting -- the room was definitely mis-advertised on the website (the picture showed a room with 2 beds, and our room had just enough space to walk around the 1 double bed). Also, the big TV mounted on the wall had all of the wires just hanging down at the foot of the bed -- looked pretty janky. We'd probably stay here again but definitely go for one of the larger rooms.

Mark A.

Yelp
Like any hotel this old the rooms are tiny bit the public areas are large and stunning. The staff is extraordinarily helpful.

Yelp
I love small businesses like Hotel 340 and wish I could rate it higher, but just can't as I felt unsafe the entire time I stayed here. When I arrived at 9:30, the front door was locked, so I (27 y/o female) called the lobby while my friend (same demographic) waited in the car. Lobby staff (of one) was very friendly. I was told to park in the garage down the street (which was deserted except for a few loiterers). I parked, then walked down the dark street with my friend and our luggage where we were followed by a man on a bicycle who was harassing us... We had to ask a cabbie for help! There was literally no one else around! At this point, I felt so nervous about my car in the public garage. I tried to let it go, but in the middle of the night was awoken by screaming only to look out the window to the street where a bunch of kids were beating each other up! Again- no one around! Just not a restful night at all and of course this is mostly the fault of St. Paul police, but for what I paid for this room, I should at least be somewhere I can feel safe and know that my car is in a safe place too. Sad to say I will never return to Hotel 340. I should list the pros though: -nice small room -decent bed -beautiful, clean bathroom -nice staff

Yelp
We stayed just one night but loved it. Very nice room. Great staff. Very friendly and helpful. Felt nice to be in a hotel that wasn't a cookie cutter and was authentic to its origins. Really nice beds and bathrooms.

Yelp
I am a Native Minnesotan and I NEVER knew about this Hidden Secret! I found them online with the best price downtown St. Paul. I did some research and then reserved my room. They were fabulous! Graham was there to great me when I arrived late and was there bright eyed and bushy tailed the next morning when I was heading out. They serve a GREAT complimentary continental breakfast! The rooms were so nice. I loved everything about them, it had a cozy feel you felt the history of the building, however the rooms were modernized. If that makes sense. I enjoyed relaxing in the comfy bed watching the big flat screen on the wall. Then the bathroom, I really loved the bathroom it was so updated. I just can't believe that I never ever knew this was there! When I travel back to MN, I will definitely be staying back at Hotel 340! YOU GUYS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! I have a huge family and a ton of friends and have already recommended Hotel 340 to all of them. I truly enjoyed my short stay there. Celena Montantes
