Postcard From the Pontine Islands: This Louis Vuitton Artistic Director Owns a Cave on the Italian Archipelago

"For Ventotene, I suggest my cousin’s Hotel Agave e Ginestra, on the south coast. It’s simple and elegant, and has beautiful gardens that slope down towards the sea cliffs."

Where can I start? With the beautiful location or the gentle people? The attention to detail, the style, the quality of buildings; a bit far from the small village (with x restaurants) but offering a day and night free taxi service with a smile (see picture of narrowness of the streets to the harbour)|Pity they decided to stop the restaurant, only breakfast of course.

Perched on a hill top of a remote island, hotel Agave e Ginestra offers a tranquil stay, where you feel almost at home thanks to warm-hearted and welcoming staff. During our visit they graciously arranged afternoon aperitif, a delivery of non-alcoholic wine (non-existent otherwise on the island, or in any Mediterranean country for that matter) and a very affordable boat tour at sunset. ||We stayed in one of the top-floor rooms, which has a shared terrace (between two rooms) with a fantastic view of the sunrise over crystal-clear, blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, accompanied by a wake up call in the form of a rooster crowing. ||The room itself fits within the surrounding nature, it’s decor is unpretentious and offers just enough amenities that are needed for a comfortable stay. ||The on-site restaurant, where the breakfast is served, is carved into a cave, and plays a role of a kitchenette extension of the accommodation where guests can help themselves to some complimentary items such as coffee or run a tab for a selection of beverages, available any time of the day/night.

The owners are very proud of their hotel and so they should be! ||||The hotel is 10 mins walk from the village but if you don't want or cannot walk they offer a shuttleservice. ||The surrounding is beautiful and tranquil, from your hammock you can lookout over the sea and Santo Stefano, it is lovely. The hotel has a relaxing vide.||The room is very nice and clean, thanks to the other staffmembers which are also very nice, helpful and forthcoming.||||Everyone is making you feel very welcome and at home.||||Among other things we choose this hotel outside the village because it also has a restaurant. Unfortunately it wasn't open yet, which we said to the owners. To our surprise they organised on our last night a excellent dinner with homemade dishes (such as fresh vegetables, risotto with menta, sort of greek yoghurt with strawberries, rucola salad with tomatoes and bufela mozzarella) which all tasted delicious! After the dinner they also had homemade liquor.||||This hotel is highly recommended! ||||If you can...go on a clear night outside or walk around/back from the village and watch the many, many stars. It is awesome! ||||We hope to come back in the near future.

The hotel was the ideal base on Ventotene for us (a brother and sister in our 20s and our mother). The triple room was quite basic but comfortable. The half-board option was very good value for money; dinner was delicious and the portions were generous. One evening's menu was entirely vegetarian and there was very good fish and seafood on other nights. Puddings were not included but were well worth tasting. There was also great fresh fruit at breakfast. The shuttle bus to the beach was very handy (5-10 minute journey) and the terrace was the perfect place to read a book or for a pre-dinner drink from the honesty bar. All the staff were friendly and helpful. It was my first time on the island and I loved the atmosphere.

In the middle of the island, the hotel offers a quiet stay in comfortable rooms with great view on the sea and the Santo Stefano island. The owners are nice though not too generous in giving tips on the island. The food is of very good quality, thanks to fresh products from the owners' field and to the art of Gisa, the cooker and wife of the owner, Filippo. A shuttle service connects almost on demand the hotel with the town and the harbour. A beautiful and relaxing stay.

We stayed towards the end of September 2014. My luggage was lost for three days and Pier Filippo and his wife Adalgisa the owners of the family run Hotel could not have been more helpful, constantly ringing the airport and airline and even lending me clothes! So what could have been a stressful start to a holiday was smoothed away by their kindness and the beautiful, relaxing surroundings of the Hotel. ||||We stayed for a week in the Yucca suite which has the most wonderful precipitous sea and cliff views from the bedroom window and the non-overlooked balcony and whose rooms are carved out from a cave. Even in the heat cool is preserved internally. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom well appointed and the underfloor lighting helps to contribute to the relaxed atmosphere of the suite which is magical without being pretentious. The whole ethos of the Hotel is based on sound ecological principles - Adalgisa's wonderful cooking incorporates all the vegetables and herbs which they grow themselves and an interesting culinary curve that sweeps all the way from South America to Italy. All the staff are extremely pleasant and friendly. On demand Gigi will transport you back and forwards from the local town which is only a kilometer or so away but this distance guarantees that you will have peace and quiet throughout your stay unless like us you are fortunate enough to be there during the feast for the local Saint, when you can witness the competition of marvellously hand painted hot air balloons during the day and the most fantastic fireworks at night. We had a wonderful time on Ventotene at Agave and Ginestra and very much look forward to going back in the not too distant future.

The staff is gracious and helpful, providing a shuttle to/from the town center and recommendations for enjoying the island. The on-site restaurant offers a nice dinner and light breakfast, including gluten free options. Each room has a great view-specify if you would like a top floor with chairs on the balcony or a lower level with a cozy hammock. The hotel, similar to all on the island, isn't fancy, yet it is comfortable and clean and provides peace, silence and natural beauty. Perfect for a weekend getaway!
