We stayed at Alpenruh in July, so we almost always had unobstructed views of Eiger, Munch and Jungfrau every morning. Seeing the gliders take off from the grassy patch on the mountainside in the evenings didn't hurt either. Clean, cozy rooms with comfy beds. What tilted our decision toward Alpenruh vs the other choices was the free breakfast voucher offered at the top of Schilthorn in Piz Glorida. I'm very happy with that decision as it was a fantastic experience, to see all the way to Interlaken while sitting on a chair sipping coffee.
The hotel staff were helpful and Ferdinand is an entertaining and friendly host.
The breakfast was good, but the flies were a bit annoying. So maybe put up an electric fly killer?
There was one complaint though: after a long day of hiking, we came home to take a shower but by the time it was my turn (I'm glad my wife and son were already done), the water started to get too cold. Called front desk, they came and checked the shower, and promised it will be fixed soon. Still no hot water after a while, and since nobody was at reception after 6, I just skipped the shower for that night (didn't bother to call the emergency number). No big deal. But things didn't improve in the morning. I told the front desk and was told the boiler had broken last night, nobody else had hot water, and it will be fixed immediately. OK, things happen. But again, no hot water in the afternoon! This was too much, and after another complaint, I guess we got lucky and it was fixed. I understand things can break, but I think a hotel in the mountains should have a pretty robust hot water system, and perhaps a backup boiler?
I don't know if this was a factor or not, but we were offered a free luggage drop (~50 CHF value?) to the Murren BLM when we checked out, which saved us a Stechelberg bus transfer when going back to Interlaken. So that was nice.
I would stay at Alpenruh again, but I'll consider the other options more carefully now that I have seen Piz Gloria.
