Hôtel Alt Montréal

"What's the story here?Contemporary and colorful, this stylish budget hotel is located in hip and happening Griffintown right by the Lachine Canal, a burgeoning residential area on the waterfront. Who are you likely to see milling about the lobby?Owned by Le Germaine, a Canadian hotel chain known for high style and designer touches, the Alt was developed to serve business travelers looking for more budget stays, but without compromising on quality or comfort. How are the rooms?Rooms are tidy and small with everything you need to get right to work: a station with an ergonomic chair, super-speedy free Wi-Fi, and well-placed electrical outlets. The bed is a dream, too, with Egyptian cotton sheets and a goose-down comforter that go well above the average business hotel in this price range. Despite giant windows, dark-gray walls and carpeting make the room a bit gloomy; then again, it's the perfect environment to hunker down and get focused. Were there any details that made you take note? The rain shower is great and the Bella Pella products are amazing. Another plus: no check-out time. Time for a snack break. What are the choices? There's no room service or minibar, but you can swing by the Altcetera counter in the lobby for snacks, drinks, breakfast pastries, and coffee. What else should we know? The modern furniture in the lobby and on the terrace make this a really work-friendly hotel. The gym is cute and brightly lit, with huge windows and a multicolored checkered wallpaper that reflects the hotel's overall sense of happiness. Ask that your room be stocked with a yoga mat—a nice free perk. Wrap it up: What's the Hotel Alt best for?Full of panache, stylish meeting nooks, and a trendy bar beloved by Griffintown professionals, this affordable business hotel is a nice, well-located home base for a trip to Montreal." - Isa Tousignant

We stayed for a wedding and brought our dogs (and someone to stay with them in the room because the instructions were clear that they couldn’t be left alone - which is fair for both the hotel and the dogs). Each dog got a dog bed, treats and two bowls. The service was excellent, the room was beautiful and we enjoyed our stay. Only thing that would have been nice that they didn’t have: room service!

Stayed for 3 nights. Check in was perfunctory and staff weren't overly friendly. Room was basic but clean. We were on the 18th floor so we had a great view! It was about a 15 minute walk to the centre. You could purchase breakfast items at reception but we found a great breakfast venue with huge portions and very reasonable in town. We lost water supply on our last morning (mid-shower!) but it was quickly sorted. Checkout was just as perfunctory and all in all we were disappointed as it felt very basic.

Google
The team at reception were exceptional. They went out of their way to meet our needs including finding a mobility aid when we needed one. The rooms was clean and functional. Highly recommend

Comfortable rooms, clean, high end. Shower door leaks onto floor. A/C has to run all night to keep up. Still highly recommend.

I recently stayed at Alt Hotel and while the location is undeniably convenient and central, the overall experience left much to be desired considering the price point. The rooms are quite small, and mine (Room 1504) had a wall under construction, which was unexpected and diminished the ambiance. For the cost of the stay, I was surprised to find that basic amenities like bottled water weren’t provided in the room. When I asked at the front desk, I was told to purchase it, which felt unreasonable. Despite prominently advertising the Nespresso machine in the room, there were no coffee pods provided. I had to go to the front desk to request them. When I asked for just two pods for the moment, the receptionist gave me a strange reaction, which made the experience feel unwelcoming. Alt Hotel definitely benefits from its great location, but for the price and the minimal amenities offered, I expected a more comfortable and guest-friendly experience.

Google
Location is great and Indian Rose across the street is definitely a must try! However the service received in regards of the parking is to be reviewed by staff. If you’re going to provide information to your guests about your rate, make sure it’s consistent by everyone. When we checked in, we were informed by one staff that the rate would be lower and to simply come at check out and we’ll be paying for the parking at the same time. Morning of check out, we then get told by another staff that there’s no such thing as hotel rate for the parking. So even though the posting at the parking AND a staff member at check in told us there’s a hotel rate, when it was time to actually pay for it - we were told it wasn’t a thing. It’s the principal of providing accurate information to your guests.

Google
Beautiful hotel! Really conveniently located with underground parking available for an extra fee per day. Super easy check in/out with great customer service all around. We stayed on the 14th floor in a corner suit and loved the view of the beautiful city. We had no issues with noise and the hotel was very clean. I would recommend this hotel if your staying in Montreal, bonus points for being able book with Aeroplan!

Google
Parking. It gives you a daily parking rate. Yet we were told it would be $19 every time we go in and out. It says dog-friendly. But you can't leave your dog in the room unattended.

Yelp
In this economy it always nice to find a place that is reasonably priced. This place is the only place we found this summer in Montreal that fit the bill. The best part is seriously the prices. Every other hotel in Montreal was obnoxiously priced. The rooms are modern and clean. It's conveniently located near old montreal.

Yelp
I stayed at this hotel for a conference that took place here (7th floor facilities) for which I got a conference rate. Even though the rooms are probably considered small, they don't feel quite so small due to the boutique and space and energy saving aspects of the rooms. The bed was comfy the bathroom was unique in that it had a bench below the towel racks. The room keys double as your proximity door lock and as a master on/off device for your lights. The 7th floor has an outside terrace with a nice view of the surrounding area. The hotel does not include a restaurant, but food options and coffee service are available. There are a few restaurant and fast food options in the vicinity. However, the hotel is not convenient to the Metro. Your options are to get a bus, a ride, or walk a minimum of 12 minutes. Rooms are relatively quiet but not soundproof - you will hear neighboring doors close, the elevator if nearby, and traffic outside. I wish that either the blinds were a bit better at blocking light or that room-darkening curtains were available, as street light did shine through the blinds at night. Parking is available in a garage under the hotel, however the price per day goes up if you take your car out on any day(s) . My stay here was pleasant, but I personally prefer a hotel closer to the Metro when in Montreal.

Yelp
I had such an amazing experience at Alt Montreal!! I flew in from Arizona. Excellent customer service. Clean and very comfortable room. I slept so peaceful. I went to the gym early morning and they had all the equipment I needed. Very clean and organized! I asked for a late check out because I do not check into my next hotel until 4pm and they gave me a complimentary late check out to assist me with my schedule. I will be staying here next visit! Thank you! Very impressed!

Yelp
Great little property. Super quiet with amazing beds! Front desk was very friendly. I had a double room with a deep bathtub. It was a calm oasis after busy work days. Just what I hoped it would be! Those beds!!!!

Yelp
I wish they had half stars because Hotel Alt should be 4.5. It's a beautiful, modern hotel and we enjoyed our stay very much. However, it is not convenient for public transportation (although we heard this will be changing) so we had to Uber a lot to get where we wanted to go. It is within walking distance to old Montreal, but that area is very touristy and we wanted to see it but not spend a lot of time there. It can be a bit noisy depending on where your room is. We didn't have many issues with noise but there were a couple. Another annoyance was having to pay for parking. I get that it's not their garage but it definitely adds up. And you have to pay extra if you want to get your car out at any point. The staff were very nice and helpful to us. There are restaurants and a supermarket and drug store within walking distance so you can get items you need very easily.

Yelp
If you are under 40, this may be a great hotel. Over 60 and Disabled, not so much. "I was stunned to find no doorman and no bellman. This is a do it yourself hotel. There is absolutely no service. I called to ask for extra towels and they told me to come to the lobby and they would provide them. We had an accessible room, which on first sight, looked modern (exposed cement walls). It turned out to be inaccessible. Most important, the toilet was so low that it was impossible to use either for an old person or someone in a wheelchair. I called and asked if they had a toilet seat extender, but they did not know what I was talking about. The light switches near the bed are high and I could not reach them lying down. No one told me that in order for the room lights to activate upon entering, I had to insert my room key card in a slot, if removed while leaving, the lights go out immediately. I believe in conservation, but this is absurd. While the chamber maids did a good job of straightening the room, they never change the towels (we were there four nights). In the bath room, the towel racks were placed away from the shower and difficult to access, even for people without mobility problems. No room service, but there is actually decent food to be bought in the lobby. One more thing. the hallway lights go on when you step into the hallway. If you wait too long for an elevator or to get your room card out, the lights go out and you are in the dark (they can be reactivated by taking a couple of steps. I appreciate conserving electricity, but this is supposed to be a good hotel and I didn't expect to enter a dark hall. The hotel is convenient for the old town or seaport, but it is away from mid-town and the museums.

Yelp
We stayed in Alt Hotel Griffintown from June 11th to June 14t.h. We had a great stay and this hotel was very nice, comfortable, reasonable, clean and in a great location. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and welcoming. We drove up from the Philadelphia are and there is a reasonable parking garage under the hotel. We had a double room with two queens as we had 3 adults in the room, my wife, our daughter and myself. The room was very spacious and funky modern. The beds were very, very comfortable. The bathroom was great with nice fixtures. The room was quiet and we did not hear much street noise. The hotel has restaurants and shops in the building. There is also a Starbucks. It is a an easy and safe 10-15 minute walk to Old Montreal and the great restaurants and café s the city has to offer. I would stay here again when I come back to Montreal. We were about $165 per night including all taxes and parking. Not bad at all.

Yelp
I stayed at the ALT Hotel in Griffintown from Monday evening 'til this morning. My room was funky. There was no dresser ... there was a drawer under the bed. The bed was really comfy! To the left of the bed was a frosted window looking into the shower ... not so good if you want privacy in the shower. The left wall of the shower was the frosted window bordering the bathroom. I found the water never got hot enough in the shower. My room was $154 (plus taxes) per night. There was no mini fridge or microwave oven in the room. The staff was friendly. There are a couple restaurants attached to the hotel. It's a bit of a walk to the downtown core as the hotel is in a newly developed area of Montreal.

Yelp
The bad Greeted kind of slow and unwelcoming vibe. One staff member pushed us off on another employee and then she had no idea that we were waiting to check-in. Towels very rough No fan in the bathroom Blinds do not keep out sunlight A bit of a walk to metro Never got the extra towel I asked for. Very noisy even on level 17. You can hear all traffic. The good It's design It's space You can find free parking

Yelp
Ultra modern hotel in Montreal at a reasonable rate. We booked about 2 weeks ahead for a 4 night stay and paid in average $120/night. Small but quaint for a couple and enough space for a short stay. Bed was very comfortable. Shower was all glass and the hotel provided shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Kudos to the hotel for what looked like responsibly produced products sans parabens, merci beau coup. Keurig was a nice touch and convenient for a morning wakeup. Hotel lies in a developing area but not too far from touristy areas. Nothing Uber can't help with ;) The hotel has a restaurant connected as well as a breakfast spot but I we didn't try either. We did happen to try the Dairy Queen next door though, yum. Highly recommend and will definitely stay again upon next visit.

Yelp
Great value for money. This was my first experience with the Alt Hotel brand, which basically has a "no frills" concept. Stayed for 2 nights this past weekend. SIZE: The room was huge compared to my expectations, easily 30% larger than the other 3-4 star hotels I've been to. Washroom was spacious as well with full bathtub. BED: Super soft. Like, ridiculously soft. Also, you can get a room with 2 beds for the same price. PRICE: There's a cap rate of $154/night, regardless of 1 or 2 beds. LOCATION: Location is good if you want to be close to Old Montreal (2km walk), but it's not walking distance for Mont Royal/Plateau area. Note that as of Aug 2015, there's quite a bit of construction in the area. PARKING: The underground parking was a bit inconvenient (had to drive around the entire building to find it, and there was a 1-way street) and fairly expensive at $23/night. OTHER: - I could be mistaken, but from what I could tell, there's no room service though you can buy bottled beverages/snacks from the lobby. - The room key/card had to be fixed twice in our 2 day visit. - They're flexible with checkout on Sunday, given availability. We were able to checkout at 5pm for no extra charge

Yelp
Modern and cool. The hotel is styled simply and they focused on things that matter like free WiFi, cool interior, friendly staff and clean rooms. This place is not luxurious but I actually prefer this over some more premium brands I have stayed at. It is located about 15min walk from Old Montreal. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Never again. I'm writing this review at 3:56 am from my room at the alt hotel. As I write, people are yelling to each other down the hallway, slamming doors, and carrying on like it's a full-blown party. I've called security up here, and they haven't accomplished anything meaningful. I've checked in at the front desk, and they don't have another room to offer me. They haven't offered my any compensation or tried to reestablish goodwill in any way. Unbelievable. They have also offered me no suggestion as to how to spend the rest of my night here. I'm here on a business trip, and don't know how in going to get through the day with the prospect of a fully sleepless night ahead of me. TL;DR: never again.

Yelp
We stayed here for a night as a couple visiting Montreal, we paid about $150+ for the night with an additional $20 for parking in the underground lot (although you get in/out privileges). This hotel is located near a developing area..so lots of construction around. This place is quite convenient if you have a car, but if you were to walk to Old Montreal or the city centre where the shops are..it is quite a hike (doable on a warm sunny day though). The room itself was very nice and brand new..there were concrete walls for an indsutrial feel along with modern touches..the washroon was very clean and spacious..there was a glass door at the shower (barely frosted) and no lock on the washroom door..I am unsure whether all the rooms are like this, but something to consider if you are sharing a room with someone other than your significant other. There is a terrace that would be nice to hang out at during the summer, with quite a view..there gym was quite disappointing for a brand new hotel, as there is very limited equipment, and they are definitely not top of the line..there was several meeting rooms with televisions, couches and tables which would be good for businesses. The lobby is full of snacks and treats but they are very pricey; there is a Starbucks on ground level as well as two restaurants. As for security, I would say it is very good, as you require your hotel room key to select the floors in the elevator.

Yelp
Wow what a neat place! Stayed there with a couple of friends and the Alt hotel pleasantly surprised us. The room, as mentioned by other reviewers was chic, clean, modern and contemporary. The bed, oh my the bed, we were able to fit 3 people in the amazing luscious queen sized bed! Super comfy, best sleep away from home I had for a while. The location is stellar right downtown on Peel so close to everything in the heart of the amazing city that is Montréal. The reason why it lost a star was for the bathroom design. Be forewarned that the bathroom comes with a very modern design with a glass panel that looks into the bedroom! My friends could basically see me showering! A bit strange...but maybe exciting for couples?

Yelp
I asked a customer for a Hotel recommendation because the smaller Old Port hotels have started jumping the rates for tourist season starting May 1st This hotel is similar to the Starwood Aloft concept which is loft like rooms with amenities for the millenials and a break from the usual dreary hotel rooms Le Germain group adds their own twist of course to make your stay very delightful and enjoyable Rooms are a great size although the workspace desk could have more depth but the built in media interface with a usb charge connector is a nice touch. I was pleased with my queen room which also offered a lounge chair to relax in Rooms are very modern and have a hip feel to them Firm mattresses ensures a great nights sleep Wi-Fi was tested with 10mbs speeds which is great and a stupidly simple log in process means devices get connected right away...hint there is no log in process They have the Keurig machine and offer Davids teas and all the shampoo you can use and plenty of towels Staff is super friendly and cool to boot and will make you an espresso and even serve you vins and beer later in the day. They dont have a cafe but there is an attached Starbucks but they do offer cool treats and snacks and light breakfast fair in the lobby and their Americano's are way better than Starbucks (hint just get all your stuff and add it to the Hotel Tab) The hotel is in an area undergoing some revitalization but within a short walk is a Depanuer, a SAQ, a Winners, a Shoppers Drug Mart, West Elm, a Subway and probably a 10 minute walk to Old Montreal For joggers they have Lacoste gear to wear and some canal jogging trails nearby No pool or sauna I didnt check to see if there was a fitness room but Montreal is a walkable city so get some fresh air and go walk around the area Highly Recommended You will pay more money and have a less joyful customer experience at other hotels

Yelp
We were extremely lucky to have found a gem in the heart of downtown, Alt Hotel Montreal by Le Germain, during our short weekend getaway. Located in the vibrant neighbourhood of Griffintown, walking into this hotel was almost as if you walked in to your own home kind (well, I can dream!). Staff was super accommodating and friendly. After hours on the road, we checked-in in one of the most comfortable rooms. The room was bright and modern - exactly what we wanted (nothing pretentious!). As content creators, we planned a trip to Montreal to create content and most importantly, experience and memories we can share with our audiences. Our 15-minute power nap turned into an hour long for their oh-so-comfortable mattress and Egyptian cotton and bamboo linen bedsheets. We were literally sleeping on a cloud. The hotel really stands out for its uniqueness in their taste of art - colourful walls come to define different areas of the hotel including the outdoor terrace, fitness and meeting rooms. When we choose to consume consciously and the environment helps you to achieve that is everything I can ask for. The Alt Hotel offers an eco-friendly and sustainable environment. The building was designed and constructed to be energy efficient and features a geothermal heating and cooling system that recycles warm air as well as automatic and energy-saving lighting devices. Merci Alt Hotel Montreal pour cet incroyable séjour!

Yelp
Great hotel! The location is very convenient to Bell Centre. The staff is very pleasant and helpful. Three great dining options within the hotel! The beds are heavenly and while the room is not very large, perfect to have a restful night!

Yelp
Choosing a hotel when traveling is always a stressful decision for me. Whichever I choose has to be a delicate balance between location, price, and comfort or frankly, it could ruin whole trip for me. That being said, I LOVED my stay at the Hotel Alt last week! Hotel Alt mainly caught my eye because of the affordable price, style (reminiscent of the Aloft chain), and rave reviews -- and I have to say it didn't disappoint! The Room/Facilities: At about 120 a night (through booking.com), Hotel Alt is a wonderful value. The rooms and facilities are brand-spanking new, clean, and colorful. The room wasn't huge, but it was very comfortable for two, 20-something girls. The bed was bigger than I expected and the sheets/mattress were soft, giving me some of the best night's sleep I've had in a hotel. In terms of accommodations, there was an HD TV in the room, along with a phone, iHome alarm clock, iron and ironing board, and Keurig (with a few k-cups). There is also a small closet (I've seen many reviews saying that there wasn't one -- guess they couldn't find it. lol), drawers beneath the bed, and the staff added a mini fridge upon my request without any trouble or additional charge. The bathroom was "spa style" with a small, wood bench, a shower only (which can be seen from inside the room through frosted glass.. be warned if you're shy haha) as well as surprisingly good shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and hand soap for those who forgot their own. If you're driving up, there is some street parking, but you're probably better off parking in the attached garage. It's quiet and safe and about $23 CAD a day if you don't leave; if you take your car out, it's $28. The Staff: Very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable of the area! For every question we asked they had an answer or were willing to look it up for us. They definitely made us feel welcome. The Location: Alt is in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Griffintown, which means there's a lot of construction in the area. It's about a 15-minute walk/bike from Old Port/Montreal (which is great on a nice day -- don't get caught in a downpour like we did), but if you're looking to spend a lot of time downtown, it is a bit out of the way... (This is the only reason I knocked off a star). Aside from that distance, the location of the hotel itself is great. There are several restaurants in the same building including a cute brunch spot, a lively bar, and a Starbucks; it's also about 2 blocks away from New Gas City and a metro, and it was super easy to hail an uber. Overall, I was happy to call Hotel Alt my maison for a few days and I'd definitely stay again!

Yelp
Great hotel and great staff we stayed the second week of June and everything went as we would of hoped for. Room service was great and considerate and front desk was always there to answer any questions! We plan to go to Montreal again next year and would chose this hotel again anytime

Tom M.

Yelp
This place is one of the best hotels I've stayed anywhere, and I'm picky. I travel 100 nights a year on average, so I've been to quite a few places, but this place really sticks out in my mind for (3) reasons. I will stay here again, and bring my wife to it, who is even more picky :) STAFF: So very friendly, and let's be honest, not all Montreal cool establishments can say that, let's be fair. A much more personal experience than the large chains. AMENITIES: The rooms are spacious, double closets, a place for everything and ample plugins! I slept like a baby there. And it's a cool place, from a vibe/feel/look perspective. Restaurants and coffee choices all downstairs in the complex, all very well thought out. AND it was priced to comply with my travel policies. LOCATION: You can pretty much walk everywhere and find a scene in any direction. I walked to my meetings, meals, and just to get some exercise. It's right next to the Lachine Canal, and 5 minutes walking from Old Downtown. Give Alt a try, you won't be disappointed. Tom

Yelp
Great value for the money you will spend in Montreal. The only real downside to the place is that it is roughly a mile to the main tourist and business areas and no metro stop in the immediate vicinity. Griffintown itself needs a few more years of development in order to put this place in prime evening real estate. The room was comfortable and cleaned very well. As I said, major downside is its location so make sure to pack some walking shoes!

Yelp
Recently we had meetings here for the course of three days and I stayed two nights at the hotel. What was nice: The hotel has a very fresh modern feel to it. I would say in some ways they have copied the design of W hotels. Very modern and clean design. The swings in the lobby are a bit kitschy for me but hey what do I know of design? My room on the 16th floor had a spectacular view of the downtown core. Room was comfortable modern and the bed was very comfortable. For our meetings the meeting rooms (Indigo) was very nice with great views and large windows to let in the natural light. The other day we were across the hall and views were equally nice but a bit less spectacular. Location in Griffintown is very central and very close to the old port and easy to get in and out of! What I didn't like: We had AV issues in the larger room and needed to call the attendants a few times. They seemed a bit miffed and never really apologized. Really for the amount of times we do meetings a year it was a pain and although they tried to help solve it was sort of " that's the way it goes" attitude which I didn't appreciate for the most part. The food was so-so. Actually our meeting planner asked for different sandwiches each day however there was salmon and chicken wraps day one. A selection of cold cuts plus chicken sandwiches on day 2, and day 3 had chicken sandwiches again with some other pulled pork like selection. Each day there were fresh salads and they were okay however the food was really meh! No one was very impressed in our group! We have eaten much better at many different hotels. Some in our group liked the hotel others didn't and I'm somewhat neutral on my liking of this place. Maybe because it's new that they gave bugs to iron out. Maybe it's a young inexperienced staff? We did another meeting at the Alt in 10-30 and the experience was somewhat similar. We will keep this place in mind for the future but we will look to other locations. The fact that there is no loyalty program with Alt hotels is a big minus. Try competing with the big chains and you understand why frequent business travellers select their locations. Loyalty matters. Lack of no points or loyalty program will mean it's not on the top of our list for the future! For me my overall review is 2.75/5

Yelp
This hotel is great. We came here with our two dogs and the staff provided dog bowls and dog beds. The room was very clean and modern and the staff very helpful and friendly. Lots of restaurants and cafes close by, and not too far of a walk from Old Montreal.

Yelp
Great location, very modern boutique type hotel and courteous staff. At $154 per night including a super late check out on a Sunday makes this the perfect spot if you're visiting Montreal for the weekend. Id stay here again.

Yelp
One of my favourite hotels to stay at in Montreal. The rooms are small but very clean and comfortable (and cool-looking). Free wifi and a little Keurig machine in every room is a nice touch. Love the bathrooms. It's a bit of a walk away from everything but we got an Uber within 2 minutes.

Yelp
Nice, clean, modern hotel with a great price in an up and coming neighborhood. Hotel staff very friendly. Surprised that a deal has not been made with the car parking company under the hotel. Everything is within a 15-20 minute walking distance. I would definitely stay here again.

Kristen M.

Yelp
Checked in today. Very seemless process. Front desk staff were very helpful, even with all our questions. Rooms are very clean and quiet. Beds are very comfortable (soft). Decor is unique. Love it! Great place for the price!!

Chris M.

Yelp
Very nice hotel, modern, new in a great spot! Highly recomended!

Joe L.

Yelp
Nice hotel and in walking distance to many areas. Reason for 3 stars was for the parking. There's a parking garage to the rear of the location, but isn't connected to the hotel; thus, you are paying full price -- no discount whatsoever. If staying multiple nights, $25 per night can get quite expensive. Shame on the hotel for not working that out for their guests. Other than that if you don't have a car, you should definitely stay here.
