9 Best Affordable Hotels in Kyoto | Condé Nast Traveler

"A discreet 21-room property along the Kamo River, Hotel Alza offers more space than most in its category with refined, understated decor and touches of history—most notably a striking glass mosaic depicting a painting by Kyoto-born artist Ito Jakuchu at the entrance—and guests are welcomed with sencha green tea and Kyoto-style snacks as examples of thoughtful omotenashi; while there is no in-house restaurant, its riverside location places Gion and Pontocho Alley's restaurants and nightlife just steps away." - Melinda Joe

This hotel is the epitome of Kyoto, a blend of modern amenities and traditional Kyoto charm. The neighborhood is close to all the main attractions but on a very quiet and quaint street. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Rooms are very well maintained and very clean. For a relatively small hotel, our room offers so many amenities; from your mini fridge, towel warmer, slippers & robes. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable with lots of space for luggage and counter space.||The breakfast bento boxes were a nice treat to have first thing in the morning as coffee and breakfast cafes were not very close by.||Overall we had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay here.

I just left Hotel Alza and already miss it! We stayed in several hotels during our trip to Japan, and Hotel Alza was by far the best. The room was incredibly spacious—especially by Japanese standards—the bed was soft and comfortable, and the bathroom even had a jacuzzi tub. The staff were warm, friendly, and welcoming. And I absolutely loved their pajamas! I wasn’t sure what to expect from a 2-star hotel, but it far exceeded my expectations—it felt more like a 5-star experience. They provided thoughtful amenities like shaving razors, facial masks, and mouthwash—items that even some 5-star hotels didn’t offer. The location was fantastic and super convenient for exploring Kyoto’s main attractions. With so many hotel options in Kyoto, I can confidently say I’d return to Hotel Alza in a heartbeat.

We stayed at Hotel Alza Kyoto for four nights as part of our honeymoon. We had such a lovely experience at this hotel. The rooms are gigantic – so big compared to other Japanese hotels. The shower and amenities they provide are fantastic! The room service is excellent, they make the beds and replenish all things every day while you’re out exploring. You can’t beat the location of this hotel – not only are you on a lovely, quiet, historic street, but you are central to everything. Right beside the river, it was so nice to walk along it on our way home each night. You are minutes away from so many amazing restaurants across the river, and 2 minute walk to a train station with two important lines to get you to all attractions. The service is excellent; each person that we spoke with was so kind and helpful. They helped us with forwarding our luggage back to Tokyo before checking out. The one minor critique that we have is that we did notice some staining on the carpet in our room (by the night table, coffee table, and in a corner). I’m sure another guest must have spilled red wine or something. Overall, we had an excellent stay. Thank you!

The service was great. They are very professional and prompt. Communion was easy and very helpful. Breakfast was very good. We loved the Japanese traditional breakfast! Perfect location to go anywhere by walking and train or bus. Great three days in Kyoto. Thank you Hotel Alza for helping us enjoy your culture.

Great hotel! I was quite impressed with the amenities of the room. It was quite high tech, it had jacuzzi with TV, it had separate rooms for shower, toilet and also sink which made it much easier when you are sharing the room with others. The location was also amazing! Close to many nice restaurants and also attractions

I am perfectly glad and satisfied with our stay at Alza Hotel Kyoto. The location is excellent—very convenient for exploring the city yet peaceful and comfortable. The room was clean, spacious, and well-equipped, offering everything I needed ( even a hair iron! 😀) for a pleasant stay. A highlight was the breakfast: tasty, varied, and served with care. A great way to start the day! The staff were friendly, professional, and always ready to help, which made us feel truly welcome. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I would not hesitate to recommend Alza Hotel Kyoto to anyone visiting the city. I will definitely choose this hotel again on my next trip to Kyoto.

Where should I begin... my husband and I enjoyed our stay thoroughly. |From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by friendly staff who were always eager to help.|Our room was one of the best rooms we've ever stayed in and we have travelled a lot. The room was spacious, big and soft bed, the pillows were quite interesting, one was supper soft, the other one... I'm not sure what it was, it was something like half memory foam half feathers but very comfy.|The amenities in the room had everything you need for a comfortable stay, hence we said we felt like home. From pyjamas, slippers and soft towels, to an amazing bath and wet room, just wow. And the little details, like hair straighteners, face masks, mouth wash. Honestly the room had everything one need to feel at home.|We also had our breakfast served in the room in our own confort zone. Hearty Japanese style breakfast served by lively staff. Tha k you again to everyone who made our stay so lovely 🥰

My family stayed here and were really impressed with the room and the location. The room was enormous. There was a large table for tea which we enjoyed and the bathroom/tub were amazing. The hotel is in the heart of the Gion district, a short walk to the Sanjo station, and a short walk to Pontocho Alley. The Hotel Alza exceeded our expectations and we will certainly stay there again.
