9 Best Affordable Hotels in Kyoto | Condé Nast Traveler

"A discreet 21-room property along the Kamo River, Hotel Alza offers more space than most in its category with refined, understated decor and touches of history—most notably a striking glass mosaic depicting a painting by Kyoto-born artist Ito Jakuchu at the entrance—and guests are welcomed with sencha green tea and Kyoto-style snacks as examples of thoughtful omotenashi; while there is no in-house restaurant, its riverside location places Gion and Pontocho Alley's restaurants and nightlife just steps away." - Melinda Joe

My wife and I had a great stay at Hotel Alza Kyoto. The room was surprisingly spacious and very quiet, even though the hotel is close to the main areas of Kyoto. We especially loved the bathroom — the tech and layout made it feel like we had our own little onsen in the room.|The staff were also fantastic. They were available anytime we needed help and always treated us with genuine kindness.|Overall, it’s a comfortable, convenient, and well-run hotel. We’d happily stay here again.

This hotel is located in a prime location near the historic district of Gion and several subway and train stations making it easy to get around Kyoto. Our room was very large with excellent amenities and a comfortable bed. The bath was large and well equipped. The decor was modern yet classic. The staff worked hard to ensure the guests are happy and well taken care of. We look forward to staying here the next time we are in Kyoto.

This hotel is the epitome of Kyoto, a blend of modern amenities and traditional Kyoto charm. The neighborhood is close to all the main attractions but on a very quiet and quaint street. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Rooms are very well maintained and very clean. For a relatively small hotel, our room offers so many amenities; from your mini fridge, towel warmer, slippers & robes. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable with lots of space for luggage and counter space.||The breakfast bento boxes were a nice treat to have first thing in the morning as coffee and breakfast cafes were not very close by.||Overall we had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay here.

We stayed at Hotel Alza Kyoto for four nights as part of our honeymoon. We had such a lovely experience at this hotel. The rooms are gigantic – so big compared to other Japanese hotels. The shower and amenities they provide are fantastic! The room service is excellent, they make the beds and replenish all things every day while you’re out exploring. You can’t beat the location of this hotel – not only are you on a lovely, quiet, historic street, but you are central to everything. Right beside the river, it was so nice to walk along it on our way home each night. You are minutes away from so many amazing restaurants across the river, and 2 minute walk to a train station with two important lines to get you to all attractions. The service is excellent; each person that we spoke with was so kind and helpful. They helped us with forwarding our luggage back to Tokyo before checking out. The one minor critique that we have is that we did notice some staining on the carpet in our room (by the night table, coffee table, and in a corner). I’m sure another guest must have spilled red wine or something. Overall, we had an excellent stay. Thank you!

Wonderful hotel and staff rooms are great but the hotel is a bit dated. Additionally, i would recommend changing the aesthetics of the lobby, maybe change from the grey marble to wood would help a-lot. The location is great and staff went above and beyond and at many points better than some 5 star hotels we stayed at. Also i will forever miss that toilet.

Easily the best hotel we stayed at in Japan. The room was very spacious, the bedding was high quality, and the bathroom felt luxurious. On top of it all, it's ideally located so we were able to walk to most places. I thought it was well priced for the quality and comfort, I would certainly stay here again if we come back to Kyoto

I searched for weeks where to stay in Kyoto, this hotel by far made my wife and I plus a 1 year old child love Kyoto. The staff was the most welcoming we have ever felt the rooms are amazing and big. but the best part is the staff of this hotel.

It’s our go to place to stay! Central location near train stations, busses, restaurants and shopping. The rooms are very well appointed and you want for nothing! Beautiful decor and the management is accommodating and welcoming! Highly recommend without any hesitation. Our second trip to Kyoto with this hotel as our number one pick!
