Le Grand Monarque (Chartres, Centre-Val de Loire) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"A Michelin Guide selection since 1900, the Best Western Premier Grand Monarque Hotel & Spa remains a classic, combining the scale and personality of a beautiful old house with the comforts and services of a high-end hotel — what today you might call a luxury boutique hotel. The interiors have been updated, and their antique character has been respected, but also updated, with modern gestures that complement the original elements. Features include a proper restaurant open to guests and locals alike, as well as a small spa; the attractions of Chartres are all close at hand, including the cathedral and the old town." - Tablet Hotels

My husband and I visited accompanied by our puppy. We were very happy with our stay. The car park is secure and only a short distance from the hotel. The room was very large and comfortable. The decor was lovely and our puppy was spoilt with a plush bed too. We dined in both restaurants and Luna was allowed in both. The food was sublime and service was impeccable. I would recommend this hotel and would not hesitate to book again. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

My wife and I stayed here for two single nights, as a stopover to our daughter's wedding in Cognac. It was an excellent choice. The hotel has a very secure and private car park, with covered spaces and charging points, approx 3 minute walk away. All the staff were most friendly and welcoming and we were made to feel very valued. We had two different rooms and both were lovely, very nicely decorated and very clean - usual tea/coffee facilities. Breakfast was excellent, not full english, but scrambled eggs, bacon, beans etc, plus usual continental fair. Lots of choice and plenty of it! I must also praise the hotel for looking after their English guests at breakfast - an actual kettle and tea pots available in order to 'ensure' a proper cup of tea!! We also had an evening meal in the restaurant and again this was excellent - lovely food, lovely and attentive staff.

A great hotel for exploring Chartres - with lovely, comfortable, airy rooms and in a really practical location. The staff were very helpful - in particular Flavio, who stood out for going over and beyond in terms of kindly looking after us, helping us to make arrangements, finding a missing bag that we'd left in the restaurant, overseeing our luggage and helping us to pack up our car afterwards. My husband and I were travelling with my mother, whose mobility is limited and often needed a wheelchair, so this was all particularly appreciated and made a big difference to our stay. Breakfast was delicious - a wonderful range of breads, cheeses, meets, cakes, yoghurts, fruit - more than you could eat - and the bar is a lovely place for a late evening drink. We hadn't realised the spa involved an extra payment, which was probably our fault for not reading the literature carefully - but it was a bit of a surprise to find this added to the bill at the end so is something to be aware of if you're keen to use the swimming pool and sauna etc.

We got a nice almost "attic" premium room in this older hotel - facilities were nice. |So room was nice.|The AC only partially worked - it left the large room too warm for sleeping so we had to ask for a fan. It was hot outside in mid- June|Location was good - walking distance to cathedral and shopping area. |One annoyance: the hall and bathroom had motion detector lights and no way to disable - I hate getting up in the night and having bright lights go on.|And - it had a clock in the room - thank you!

Parking at the hotel was advertised on the site we booked with but there was none available when we arrived. |The room was small and cramped. It was difficult to get out of bed and avoid the furniture in the night. |The shower needed a health warning on it as it went from Luke warm to scalding hot without touching it mid way through my shower. |We had drinks in the bar and ordered two cocktails. These were very small, especially when the bar man gave some of one of them to a girl he was chatting to sat at the bar!! Not impressed! |The breakfast was very limited and was 24€ per person! Very poor value for a coffee and two croissants! |The main areas of the hotel also looked tired and in need of updating or redecorating.

So the good, this hotel is beautiful, the bar is lovely and the staff are really good. I do think it’s too much money for what you get however. We got a more expensive room and it was ok but it just isn’t worth the price. Separate car parking charges and €20 per person just to use the pool ( no thank you) plus extra for breakfast, it’s just not worth it. We did the express breakfast room service and it was also mediocre and inconsistent ( 2 croissants one day then only one per person the next- no plates, no butter then when asked for butter they removed the jam-just seemed a bit cheap and slap dash) also not their fault but something to note, if there is anything going on outside (bike festival in our case!) and there is a stage up you will NOT be sleeping. We didn’t know this ahead of booking but check if there is anything going on and where it is first! Just ok is what I would say.

We booked two rooms, one of which was junior suite for our daughter and two teenage grandchildren, and both rooms were very nice and quite roomy. Beds were excellent, bathrooms were nicely appointed, roomy and very clean. Staff was very helpful and spoke good English; my French is very rusty. The only thing that wasn't the very best was dinner in the hotel restaurant; if rating it separately I'd give it three circles, while the hotel itself definitely gets five. Parking for unloading is a little tricky if you're not aware of the "minute stop" places, two of which are shared with a Mercur hotel in the samel block. We would definitely stay here again if in Charters.
