Hotel Antumalal, Near Pucon, Lake District, Chile - Explore & Book

"Sepia photos in the entrance hall look like a cool interiors montage, until you realise the portraits and landscapes are a snapshot of the hotel's own story. Visiting dignitaries share space with vistas of an erupting Volcano Villarica, whose molten lava destroyed the owners' first hotel. A smiling Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, on a fishing holiday in 1968, take centre stage. And the story of how Guillermo and Catalina Pollak, immigrants from Czechoslovakia in 1938, persuaded the president of Chile to finance their hotel gives Antumalal a place in the country's history. The hotel is now in the hands of Rony Pollak, the founders' daughter, and the emphasis on service and luxury remains. However, it's starting to attract a younger audience with a taste for adventure. Rooms have huge picture windows; airy living areas present a stylish combination of iron furniture, colourful cushions and goat skin rugs. A cosy bar comes complete with roaring hearth and leather chairs; the dining room and terrace overlook the beautiful grounds and Lake Villarica. Delightfully low-key, it feels as though you could be in a wealthy friend's private house. Glorious. Highs The stunning sunset over the lake, which gave Antumalal its name ('Corral of the Sun' in Mapuche) The abundance of flowers and 26 different species of native trees in the gardens - go in March to see trees festooned with copihue, the red bell-shaped national flower With a lake on your doorstep and volcanoes, hot springs and white-water rivers nearby, there's no shortage of outdoor activities We loved the small but delightful details, such as a chocolate-covered strawberry left at turndown service Architecturally very interesting - a classic 50s Bauhaus design by Chilean architect Jorge Elton, which Wallpaper magazine declared 'retro chic' Lows Although beautifully furnished and maintained, there's a slight sense of faded glory - the Queen's visit would have been during its heyday Go at the wrong time of year (April-October) and those fabulous surroundings might be marred by rain It seems a shame that bedrooms in the main hotel don't have balconies to maximise the views Some bedrooms in the chalets are smaller, with limited views - better for younger children, perhaps" - Emma Whiteacre

Hotel Antumalal (Pucón, Cautín) Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Back when much of Patagonia was a lawless no-man’s land and tourists were about as common in the Atacama as thunderstorms, Hotel Antumalal, a countryside retreat at the northern end of Chile’s lake district, was already humming with guests. Time has been kind to the Antumalal. The 1950 Bauhaus-inspired hotel, with its glass walls and its terraced gardens overlooking Lago Villarrica, looks as relevant — and, more to the point, as inviting — as ever." - Tablet Hotels

This hotel is in a stunning location surrounded by beautiful gardens and access to the lake. I literally gasped when I saw the view from our bedroom. Huge glass windows give amazing views of the lake. Stayed one night and had dinner. Delicious food with good service. The hotel has a real charm - only scores down a bit because it feels a bit tired in parts.

We stayed here as part of a Backroads hiking trip. While the location is very convenient, the hotel is a pretty big disappointment. It is very dated and in need of a great deal of touch up repair throughout. The view is outstanding but that does not make up for the poor dining service which was frustratingly bad. The rooms are spacious but it is very hard to get to the power outlets and there are not nearly enough hangers in the closets. There is no air conditioning so be prepared to leave the windows open all night if you are on the first floor! Overall, this is more aligned as a 3 star property and not worth the higher price or expectations.

Our stay at Hotel Antumalal was nothing short of exceptional, and much of that is thanks to Beatriz, whose actions went far above and beyond any expectation. When we encountered a major issue with our rental car’s transmission, Beatriz stepped in and handled everything with incredible professionalism and care. She not only liaised with Europecar on our behalf but also arranged for a hotel car rental to ensure we didn’t miss a day of planned activities. Her follow-through was amazing, and thanks to her efforts, a replacement car was delivered to the hotel while we were out for the day (!! Never have I seen such service). It’s rare to encounter this kind of dedication to guest experience, and her kindness and efficiency turned a stressful situation into one of gratitude. The entire team at Hotel Antumalal has been wonderful, and Beatriz’s actions were the perfect example of the exceptional service you can expect here. If you’re looking for a place where the staff truly goes the extra mile, this is it. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.

This hotel enjoys a prime location on the shore of Lake Pucón and within easy walking distance of Pucon. The grounds are a joy and very well maintained. The decor and fittings of the hotel are dated, but have a certain charm, as do many of the hotel’s staff who go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. The reception and bar staff were top notch. The maid service was exemplary. However, our 4-night stay was somewhat marred by the hotel’s design making rooms very vulnerable to noisy neighbours! Sadly, good quality produce was spoilt by poor cooking, which we found disappointing, especially for dinner. The breakfast buffet though was good.

Very friendly and helpful team in particular Gloria. Good recommendations for hikes and sightseeing. Spectacular views and interesting architecture and interior design. A unique boutique hotel which is definitely not corporate or chain. Great location and proximity to Pucón and for exploring the district. Lovely wood burning stove in our room and the bar. Some may say that a little modernisation of bathrooms and air con required but you can get that at “hotel international”! We had a lovely stay and a fine way to end our trip to Chile.

This hotel lives and breathes 1950s authenticity. Great rooms with real fireplaces, very comfortable beds and walk-in wardrobes to hide cases - a real bonus. The views of the lake are impressive but apart from the minimalist design it is the staff that make the difference . Everyone was genuinely friendly and there to help. I thought the food in the restaurant was good but not great but the lake views again fantastic. The spa is a great place to relax with a roaring fire , sauna and large pool. Don’t expect a big chain hotel environment and in a few areas it lacks that bit of sophistication and needs some smartening up - but there is real charm here that grows on you the longer you stay.

A beautiful well-maintained hotel with chic mid-century style. We stayed for two nights in a suite which was spacious and well-appointed. The pool/spa facilities were amazing. A 20 minute walk to the town of Pucón which has to be one of the most charming towns in all of Chile. We cannot wait to return!

This property exudes charm. The setting, perched on the lake, is amazing. Though built in the 50s, it has been well preserved. The staff was friendly, especially Camilla, who seemed to run the place. Genuine friendliness, excellent food/wine in the dining room, both dinner and breakfast. The grounds and gardens are worth walking. We especially enjoyed reading by the large fireplace one rainy afternoon sipping Pisco Sours. This spot is a special place in Pucon, worth of Queen Elizabeth and several celebrities who have visited over the years.
