Hotel Astória

The hotel is historic, opened many years ago—some might say it’s just old. The location is excellent, in the center of Coimbra. About a kilometer away, across the river bridge, there’s a municipal parking lot with great rates. The area around the hotel is safe, even at night. The hotel was surely very beautiful in the past and must have been a luxury hotel once. The furnishings are often antique. The room I stayed in was very large, with a “grandma’s house” scent. It didn’t have a fridge or a safe. The bathroom was also from another era. It had excellent fixed hygiene products with a great scent. Breakfast was good, with a wide selection of sweet and savory items. There aren’t many restaurants nearby, so I didn’t try the hotel’s restaurant for dinner.

The Hotel Astoria offers a truly unique and memorable stay right in the heart of Coimbra. Stepping into the lobby is like taking a charming trip back in time; the hotel has retained its beautiful, classic Belle Époque architecture and antique fixtures, which adds an incredible amount of character.|Our room was spacious and clean, and the staff were friendly and efficient throughout our stay. The location is just perfect for our short Trip. ||The main drawback of our experience, however, was the hotel's age and construction, which made it quite hellhörig (thin-walled). We could clearly hear noise from the neighboring rooms and the hallway, but it doesn’t bother us, since we‘re both tired from our Day trip.

This is an old hotel built 1917 which has a lot of charm and where a lot of the old decoration has been maintained. The rooms have the high ceilings which were typical of the era. The bathrooms have of course been modernized and even have a bidet which you don't see often nowadays. On the downside, the sound isolation between rooms is very poor. Expect the guests next door to knock on the wall if you speak in a normal voice after bedtime. The cleaning of the rooms leave a lot to be desired. Part of the furniture and carpets are worn. This hotel could be a real gem if more work was put into it; no fault of the staff who is very friendly and helpful.

Beautiful historic hotel with personality in a great location near the old city. The rooms were clean and the staff were helpful. They have an amazing breakfast with choice of cereals and breads. Also, there were eggs, meats and beans.

I stayed at this hotel for two nights from August 3 to August 5, 2025. First of all, the hotel’s location is excellent—it’s near the square, making it very convenient to reach all the attractions. My room faced the river, offering a beautiful view of the Rio Mondego. This is an established hotel, and although the furniture is somewhat old, but everything is very clean, which didn’t affect my stay at all. The hotel staff are very warm and hospitable. The breakfast is a standard European-style buffet, providing enough nutrition to fuel a day of exploring. Most notably, I was initially concerned about the WiFi strength, but after recent improvements, it’s even better than what I have at home—upload and download speeds both exceed 300 Mbps, which was a pleasant surprise. To sum it up, I found my room to be great value for money, more memorable and impressive than many four or five-star hotels.

From the outside, the facade of the hotel was a view in itself. Upon entering you will be greeted by a lobby you may imagine is a movie set from years ago. The antique furniture and wooden flooring amazed us. We booked the romantic room. Still in theme with old furniture and fixtures including the bathroom. It was spacious and had 3 full windows with excellent view of the mondego river and bridge. Hotel location was very good. It resided along the main road accessible to public transport beside the river. University of Coimbra was 15-20min hike away. Upon check-in, the reception handed us a map and explained briefly how to navigate the city. She included a few places that we should visit. Complementary breakfast was great! Lots of bread, cheese ans juice options. There as also ham, egg and mushrooms. Cereal is also an option for kids. Btw, we really loved the hot chocolate, even though it was powdered. Our stay in hotel astoria was one we will never forget. The overall vibe of the hotel matched the old feels of the city and yet no eerie feeling during our entire stay. If you are a couple, make sure to book the romatic room!

Eccentric. Dated. Charming. Historic. The staff were welcoming and helpful, the breakfast was fabulous. The room (301) was spacious and clean, the bathroom was well-equipped and clean, the view across the river was lovely.

This is either a 5 star or 1 star hotel depending on what you are looking for. If you want a 60 inch OLED TV, fully stocked mini bar and floor safe, this is not the hotel you were looking for. However, if you want to step back in time by staying in a charming, centrally located bit of Coimbra history, then this little bit of faded grandeur might be for you. Very popular with tourists though, so you will not be bumping into Hercule Poirot at breakfast, more likely a very loud American at the next table giving everyone in the dining room a first hand account of all the places they have been to in Portugal....

Unfortunately, the man at the front desk at 11:00am on May 1st 2018 was not well suited to represent the Hotel Astória. Having decades of travel experience including exposure to thousands of hotel staff I can say the man behind the reception desk at the Hotel Astória is one of the most unwelcoming and unprofessional. My wife and I stopped by to inquire about the hotel and possibly chat about the sights of Coimbra. The hotel exterior and lobby showed promising charm, the man at the desk however indicated that we did not belong in the hotel as the lobby was "private" and if we wished to use the toilet we should "go outside". Why would a hotel like the Hotel Astória employ a person as unskilled and ill-suited? We will not return to theHotel Astória.

This is a beautiful hotel in a great location that is screaming for an update. Beautifully designed and furnished in Art Deco style; however, it's stuck there. The carpet needs replacing, the only WiFi is in the hotel lobby or dining room, the 1990's TVs need to be thrown away. Rooms come with breakfast which was fine. While we were there, I observed them installing new flat screen TVs. WiFi is certainly more needed. The lobby and dining room are nice, but there is nothing going on other than people sitting around using the WiFi. The lounge stays empty since there is no real bar, no music, no anything. Hopefully a new owner with some vision will buy this hotel and turn it into the cool place it could be. We stayed 3 nights.

Not my kind of hotel. Horrible WiFi, horrible service. Definitely not coming back here

We went there in May 2015 and booked two nights. As I was there with my girlfriend who I had not seen a while, I booked the romantic package two times. The normal night stay was 65 a night, and the romantic package for one night was 80 Euros. So I booked two nights with the romatic package. Ihis package includes a bottle of sparkling wine (which was ok by the way) and breakfast in the room. But even booked this package two nights the staff refused to give it to us. Even booked and payed it two times they said that we shall have it only once. I pointed out, that on the hotel´ s web site offers the night for 65 Euros, why they charge me 2 x the higher price if they are only willing to give me the extras once. But they were not open to arguments, but kept stubbern. The Hotel by itsself is VERY outdated. The best times seemed to be in the 1930´s , but since then it seems no renovation took place. Froim the outside the hotel looks spectecular, but the rooms are - even we had a room with river view at this higher price - old, outdated and not really clean. The smell in the room was really bad - old. The breakfast was ok and I have to highlight the lady in the breakfast room, who runs around and make it all happen. She is really nice and tries everything to make you happy. I want to highlight that I sepak Portuguese, even being a german. So my resumee: if you go to the wonderful city of Coimbra and you need a hotel: the Astoria is even at this cheap prices not really to recommend. What a pitty, because the hotel has potential. But: the staff is unfriendly, not customer orientated and the rooms scream for a make over. Not a good experience.
