"Why we love it: A pedigreed stay that perfectly marries fin de siècle charm with modern luxury The Highlights: - A French Renaissance–style building designed by America’s first female professional architect - Fireplaces and deep-soaking tubs in some rooms - An in-house craft brewery that serves pints in a “bar-cade” with pinball machines The Review: When The Lafayette opened in 1904, it was immediately hailed as one of the country’s finest hotels. America’s first female professional architect, Louise Blanchard Bethune designed the seven-story, redbrick-and-white-terra-cotta property to blend “the best that science, art, and experience can offer for the traveling public,” which at the time meant telephones and hot water in every room. Renovations in the late 1940s introduced several Art Deco elements that still remain, while a 2012 restoration helped bring the hotel into the modern era. Today, The Lafayette is part of the Wyndham Hotel Group’s Trademark Hotel Collection and features 13,500 square feet of meeting space. It’s also home to a 15-barrel craft brewery, where guests can enjoy beers and pub fare while playing arcade games; a small-batch coffee roastery with freshly baked pastries; and an outpost of Groom Service Beauty & Dry Bar for blow-outs, professional makeup, manicures, and more. The 57 rooms and suites feature wall murals of vintage photos, designed to complement a palette of plum, brown, and dusty gold. Some have fireplaces, deep-soaking tubs, and full kitchens, too. If you’re looking to indulge, book the Lafayette Suite, which includes a Juliet balcony, double-sided hearth, and dining table suitable for large gatherings."

Beautiful building on its own, but the staff is what really brings the whole place to life . Each and every staff member I’ve interacted with , (which at this point is probably all of them with how often I stay there) are always on point . They are both friendly and professional , and always very warm and welcoming, which helps make my stays feel more like home every time I’m there. Also, If you’re a neat freak like I am, this is definitely the hotel for you. It is hands down the cleanest, and best decorated hotel in buffalo. If you’re considering a stay at the Lafayette, do it ; you won’t regret it.

Main lobby bathroom was discussing. Wedding venue bathroom was on another floor. Noisy too. Food good. No parking at site of hotel. Pay to park 2 blocks away

Rooms were fairly dirty. Black mold in the shower tiling and crumbs and stains on the bedroom carpet. Garbage was not cleaned from the last guest (used coffee filter). Believe there was construction too starting around 7:00AM that shook the entire building.

We knew the hotel was old (120 yo). Renovated in 2009. The wooden wall art was stunning. The tops of the furniture are very worn. The shower was a total wet room and was outstanding. The bed was very soft and we were worried about that however we slept like a top. No food outlet in the hotel just a cafe called "Public"|The few people we came into contact with (Cassandra and Regina) were very helpful and personable. Walking around in the hotel was like being on the set of Ghostbusters and as it was dimly lit a bit eerie. I thought we may be 'slimed' at any second. We did move out after a couple of nights into another Buffalo hotel

Great building with beautiful art deco features. The lobby makes you feel like you’re at a mini “The Continental“ from John Wick.

I recently stayed in a king suite in the Hotel Lafayette for 3 days and found it pretty disappointing. I disregarded a lot of the recent negative reviews regarding the property when booking, but ultimately found most of them to be accurate. While the room I stayed in was a good size, upon arrival I found multiple things broken, including both bed side lamps and the window. The room was very poorly lit, as the only window to the room was facing an interior brick wall, preventing any actual sunlight from reaching the room. In addition, the room itself was very uncomfortably wet smelling and humid. Hallways between the rooms are pretty run down, with dark lighting. Regarding the service, the first day I stayed, the room was barely turned over (e.g. trash wasn't emptied, bed poorly made, not all towels replaced). On the second day, no house keeping was done on the room at all (and this is with me being absent from the room from 10am-5pm). In addition, frequently there was no staff at the front desk to bring these issues to. Overall, there's a lot of other hotels in the area that are more modern and clean than the Hotel Lafayette. Looking at some of the other reviews, it appears that the high rating on google may be inflated by people who took tours of the building, rather than guests who stayed in the rooms. To me, the quality of the service and rooms at the hotel are more akin to a motel experience, which is fine if it came with motel pricing.

As a lifelong Buffalonian, I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to see the Hotel at the Lafayette fully restored to its former glory. This building is more than just a place to stay—it’s a significant piece of Buffalo’s history, and I’ve had the pleasure of seeing it evolve from its heyday, through its rough patches, and now to its beautifully restored state. It’s become a favorite spot of mine, not just for its stunning architecture but because I’ve been lucky enough to attend so many memorable events there. The hotel was originally designed by Louise Blanchard Bethune, who is a legend in her own right as the first professional female architect in the U.S. To know that such a trailblazing figure helped shape a building that’s still standing over a century later gives me a deep sense of pride in Buffalo’s history. The French Renaissance style of the hotel is absolutely gorgeous, with its intricate stonework, vintage tile floors, and high ceilings. Every time I walk in, I feel like I’ve stepped back into a time when Buffalo was truly booming. I’ve been to the Lafayette for weddings, corporate events, and even casual meetups at Public Espresso + Coffee, which is located right in the lobby. They’ve done a remarkable job blending the old-world charm of the space with modern amenities. The Crystal Ballroom is a personal favorite—it’s got these elegant chandeliers and a grandeur that makes any event feel extra special. Whether it’s a lavish wedding or a business function, the space transforms perfectly for the occasion. I’ve also spent some fun nights at the Lafayette Brewing Company, enjoying great craft beer in a relaxed, historical atmosphere. One of my most memorable experiences was attending a wedding in the hotel’s Greenhouse Room. The setting was intimate yet sophisticated, with beautiful natural light streaming in. It was the perfect blend of historic elegance and modern comfort, and it really set the tone for a warm, unforgettable evening. The staff at the Lafayette knows how to throw a fantastic event, from the service to the catering—it’s all top-notch. Beyond the events, I’ve had a chance to stay overnight, and I was blown away by how they’ve restored the rooms. The suites especially feel like a perfect mix of vintage charm and modern luxury. It’s not often you find a place that honors its past so beautifully while offering all the modern conveniences. Whether you’re staying in one of their spacious suites or grabbing coffee in the lobby, you can feel the history in every corner. I’m particularly impressed by how the hotel has become a part of the city’s vibrant downtown revival. Its location is ideal—steps away from Canalside, KeyBank Center, and some of the best restaurants and bars in Buffalo. It’s not just a place for out-of-towners to stay; it’s a hub for locals like me to gather and celebrate. What’s also fascinating are the stories and legends that surround the hotel. Some say it’s haunted, which adds to its charm. I haven’t experienced anything spooky myself, but it’s fun to think that a building with so much history might have a few spirits hanging around. If you’re a Buffalonian or someone who’s just visiting, I can’t recommend the Hotel at the Lafayette enough. Whether you’re attending an event, grabbing a coffee, or just admiring the beautiful architecture, it’s a place that truly celebrates Buffalo’s rich history. It’s an absolute gem, and I’m so proud to see it shining in its restored state. I know I’ll continue making many more memories here, and I encourage everyone to experience it firsthand—you won’t be disappointed!

Attended a baby shower, the only great experience were the gorgeous decorations that were provided by my family! The service was atrocious, the room venue was filthy as were the restrooms. Never, ever, book this venue!
