My husband and I stayed in one of the villas for our honeymoon and really loved our time here. The bed was very comfortable and the plunge pool and shower that opens to the outdoors are great. The black sand beach is beautiful and the restaurant was good. One of our highlights of our time was the dog that lives or hangs out at the hotel, we loved her! We also loved all the black and green poison dart frogs around the property.

On my family trip to beautiful Costa Rica, we decided to book with the Hotel Banana Azul for our stay in Playa Negra. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly front desk clerk, Jessica, who was great. She was very accommodating and helpful with information about the hotel. Guests receive a tour of the facilities before being shown to their room which is really cool. The staff is always friendly and willing to go above and beyond to help guests. I just was amazed by the rooms and how cozy they are. The Azul Bar & Grill is also on the property and the food is great! If you need to stay overnight in Playa Negra (Caribbean side) this is your place.

Loved it here! Perfect location & vibe. Only downside was no AC in the room and some mosquitoes getting in at night but it wasn’t a huge deal as I picked the room. Definitely more of a rustic vibe rather than luxury. Drinks were great, service was great, food good. Adorable dogs on the property along with some turtles!

This hotel is lovely, a few steps away from the beach at Puerto Viejo and outside of the town centre, so it's nice and quiet if you like that.|Staff are helpful and friendly, and speak reasonable English if you need that. I had the dolphon room, which ws right above reception, with the stairs outside my room. The room was big, king size bed, verandah with 2 adirondack chairs, a hammock and table and bench seats. The bathroom is a little tired, but it's well laid out, and functional enough with a good shower, no bath. |Mosquito net for the bed, though they weren't too bad. No lift, though that's not a problem for me.|Swimming pool, spa and sloths in surrounding trees - what more do you need?|Caribe Shuttle from San Jose will drop you at the door.

Fantastic stay. Beautiful, but not pretentious. Small, but not crowded. Delicious simple food on site. I relaxed on this beach with. my husband for three straight days and it was magical.

Beware of a crazy amount of mold in every room! It was so bad as it was growing everywhere. They tried to be accommodating by moving us to different rooms but it was found in the 3 we experienced. Sloth 11, crystal frog, and villa 4. It started to make me sick and I’m going have to throw items away. We had to change our entire vacation due to this as it ruined this portion. Also, the service was just okay. Wait times are very long and people don’t seem to care too much to be working there. I would never go back.

My Mom and I spent a week at Banana Azul in Puerto Viejo and had a wonderful time! The location was perfect, just outside the small town of Puerto Viejo-right on the beach in a beautiful lush forest! The grounds were beautiful, the garden lush and full of beautiful plants and flowers. The lodging was comfortable, super clean and well kept. The food was delicious-an amazing variety of local foods mixed with other options. The friendly and helpful staff was the highlight of our stay! Steven and Alexander at the front desk always were helpful and always had great suggestions of places to visit. In the kitchen and bar, Ketsi, Maria, Laura, Julbin, Jaydon, and Yoseris kept us well fed and happy! We felt at home and always happy to see our favorite staff members each day. Everyone was so kind and attentive. I highly recommend visiting Banana Azul for a full experience of rest and relaxation!

Everything's great but the rooms. The staff is super friendly and supports a great atmosphere, the location to the beach is also perfect. However, our room had a transparent roof such that it was super bright at 5 am. Additionally, you can hear everything from the bar and people walking by since the room was partially open. All good if you can sleep with light and noises.
