This is such a sweet hotel. Old fashioned but up-to-date where needed, good beds, super friendly service and a perfect breakfast bar. Nothing fancy, relatively affordable and cosy. We’ll come back when we return tot this lovely city!

We visited Freiburg in late September and stayed 2 nights at Hotel Barbara - it was exactly what was described and what we were seeking....an 5-10 min walk from train station and then from the central location, walkability to the rest of Freiburg. Simple and effective rooms, with a hearty buffet breakfast and the feeling of immersing in the local culture. Comfortable beds and a quiet inn feel. While the inn was wonderful, the highlight was the staff, that went above and beyond to welcome my wife, daughter and I.

Nice staff, clean. Really cozy hotel with a special vibe. Great location. Price a bit high for this type of hotel (paid €165/night, no breakfast) therefore I reduced a star.

The location is super close to the train station and convention site, making it easy to explore the city or even hike into the Black Forest on foot. The place feels homey, warm, and cozy—truly one of the best stays I’ve ever had. I enjoyed my time here more than at some 5-star hotels. The breakfast? Superb.

Four stars plus. Hotel Barbara is a very good value for the price, but it’s definitely old school. There’s no elevator, which is OK for folks who are truly traveling light, but we had a couple of larger suitcases, and lagging them up two flights of stairs was a bit of an ordeal. The rooms use actual keys, and the doors don’t automatically lock. The comfort twin was still a bit small. The shower stall was an ingenious corner design with dual sliding doors, but it was a bit cramped and not what I would consider comfortable. If you don’t mind the steps, Room 34 has its own private balcony with a view of a courtyard development with apartments on the other side, so you can get a sense how the locals live. Except for some tasty egg treats, the breakfast was cold, although it did have a decent variety of breads, yogurt, bacon, oatmeal, etc.

My husband and I went on a backpacking trip across Europe. We found this hotel and we're completely impressed. We were so tired and this place was exactly what we needed. The service was impeccable. The breakfast and coffee were what we needed to continue our travels. And the beds are extremely comfortable. Highly recommend.

I stayed here for 6 nights in August. The location is excellent. Freiburg Hauptbahnhof is only a 3 minute walk and the centre of Freiburg is a 5-10 minute walk. The hotel itself is on quiet side street. The room was spacious and the bed was comfortable. The room decor was similar to lots of small German hotels I've stayed at - which is definitely a positive. The bathroom was modern but quite small. The only and unfortunately fairly major issue with room was the air conditioning. It started making a very loud intermittent buzzing noise after running for 15 minutes or so, which continued even after switching it off (search "Buzzing Noise from Air Conditioner Condensate Pump" on YouTube). Switching it from cooling to fan mode fixed it but this was a lot less effective at cooling the room. It wasn't just my room with this issue as I could hear the same noise from other rooms in the corridor. Even though I stayed 6 nights the glasses and mugs were never replaced despite being visibly dirty. The breakfast was good and would have been fine for a short stay but there was very little variation each day, so it got quite repetitive after a few days. I imagine most people are only staying for a few days though. The Wi-Fi, as with many hotels in Germany, wasn't great. It was fine when it actually worked but was barely useable at certain times of the day. The staff were all great, very welcoming and helpful.

I really enjoyed this little hotel and the area it was in. The staff were very kind and the room was clean and big enough. There was also AC which was important to me for my mom. I felt safe in the area and the street quieted down by 10:30. There are two restaurants on the street, but they were quiet by 10:30-11. The other guests were quiet and I couldn’t hear too much in the hotel. One very important detail is there is no lift. We were on the 4th floor, so had to climb quite a few stairs each time. If you have mobility issues remember to request a lower floor and remember if you live in the US their first floor is really like our second. Other than that the hotel is lovely and the decor felt very authentic and homey. It’s a good value I feel and I enjoyed the area. We ate at the Antica restaurant across the street on the corner two nights in a row. There was not a coffee machine in the room, but the one downstairs is really nice. I have zero complaints and wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again!

Yelp
We were visiting our daughter in Freiburg (without a car) and wanted a hotel near the train station and walkable to the downtown area and nearby restaurants. This hotel met our needs exactly. We enjoyed the hospitality, clean room, location and breakfast offerings. We would have enjoyed it even more but unfortunately tested positive for COVID and had to self-quarantine in our room. The innkeepers were nice enough to let us come down to the breakfast a few minutes early before other guests and to take our food our to the back courtyard to eat. The room and bathroom were a little small but quite cozy. Consider that that there is no elevator, though. As typical with inner-city hotels, you do hear nearby street noise but it was not overwhelming. We would definitely consider staying here again.
