Four stars plus. Hotel Barbara is a very good value for the price, but it’s definitely old school. There’s no elevator, which is OK for folks who are truly traveling light, but we had a couple of larger suitcases, and lagging them up two flights of stairs was a bit of an ordeal. The rooms use actual keys, and the doors don’t automatically lock. The comfort twin was still a bit small. The shower stall was an ingenious corner design with dual sliding doors, but it was a bit cramped and not what I would consider comfortable. If you don’t mind the steps, Room 34 has its own private balcony with a view of a courtyard development with apartments on the other side, so you can get a sense how the locals live. Except for some tasty egg treats, the breakfast was cold, although it did have a decent variety of breads, yogurt, bacon, oatmeal, etc.
