The Beacon is a decently-updated hotel in a great spot on the UWS, with lots of benefits, especially for a longer stay.
- Three blocks to the 72nd St subway stop, with express and local trains
- Close to the Natural History Museum and Central Park
- Lots of amenities (banks, drug stores, Citerella and Fairway, bodegas) in close proximity
- Surprisingly quiet, considering my room overlooked Broadway
- Good sized rooms and generous bathroom
- Kitchenette in the room with sink, fridge, a couple of burners and plates/silverware. I popped across the street to Fairway for yogurt and bagels for breakfast, and there was decent coffee in the room, so I was all set
There are a couple of things to be aware of:
- The wifi was pretty spotty while I was there, don't count on it as your sole source of internet
- No late check out. I asked for a 2 p.m. check out (regular checkout is at noon) and was told I could check out at 2 - for an additional $280. I read that as no late check out
- Not a comment on the Beacon itself, but the Westside is a hike from LaGuardia. When I lived on the Eastside, I could get home from LGA in about 20 minutes. The Westside usually takes closer to 45. Just be patient on the ride in, it can take a while to get across the park. It's worth it though
I'll definitely return to the Beacon. I did book a pre-paid reservations, which was significantly less expensive than a standard booking.
