My fiancé and I decided to stay in Zermatt for 3 nights on a whim during a trip to Europe. Getting to the hotel may seem like a chore the first night from the train station (if you do not know the layout of Zermatt), but is a reasonable 17 Swiss Franks right out of the train station. We paid for the cab when we first arrived, but after figuring out the town of Zermatt, were able to find our way to the Train Station with all of our luggage on the way out of town without a hassle. Zermatt and the Hotel Bella Vista were an excellent choice for a 3-night stay. The Hotel is laid out with beautiful views of the Alps in all directions. We had a 1 bedroom-1 bathroom with a view of the Matterhorn and Zermatt itself. The balcony was just the right size for two people to sit out on. The room and bathroom were both incredibly clean and welcoming to come home to each day and as an added plus they always had cookies for the visitors! There may have not been a lot of room to sit around in the room, but the hotel and staff made up for it in the lounge area on the main floor. This is where the Hotel really did shine. The staff was attentive, friendly and spoke English well. My fiancé really though they did their best to make her feel like family in the establishment and I would have to say I felt the same. They even let us borrow an international plug-in when our converter did not work. One night they had free mulled wine and each night you could order alcoholic drinks off of a well-established and reasonably priced list of wine, spirits, and beer. I would suggest making use of this option, because a Jack and Coke seemed to run roughly $17 to $20 (American) in Zermatt. We would also suggest making use of the fondue night they provide. It was the best we had ever had and was the best priced from what we could find in Zermatt. The breakfast was free and had everything you could imagine wanting in the morning. There was a mix of different breads, hard and soft cheeses, breakfast rolls, fruits, yogurts, and juices. Eggs were available upon request. Another note is on the spa at the Hotel. The spa area is opened for 8 or so hours a day. The spa itself consisted of an amazing bubble tub, sauna, steam bath, shower area, reading room, and massage room. Massages were for a fee and the bubble tub was 5 Swiss Francs. We cannot recommend this hotel enough to any friends, family members, or acquaintances that may find themselves in the area.
Side notes
-The price of lunch and/or dinner may make Zermatt seem cost prohibitive to some. We were able to make the trip more affordable by going into the grocery store and making our own meals in the late afternoon
-Do not expect great coffee in Zermatt unless you enjoy the burnt taste of a dark roast. McDonald's seemed to be the best we could find. Hotel Bella Vista's was decent, but while there you are better off having on of their teas. It is one of their specialties.
