12 Historic Places at Risk From Rising Waters

"Just outside Dubrovnik, on a cliff with panoramic views of the city, sits the once-magnificent Hotel Belvedere. The luxury hotel only operated for six years in late 20th century. Ever since, it’s been left to crumble into the sea. When the hotel opened in 1985 it had over 200 rooms, a helipad, and its own private boat dock. The complex has remained abandoned since the Croatian War of Independence. It has, however, had brief stints of occupation. During a siege on the city in 1991, dozens of Croatian refugees took shelter within its derelict walls. The 18 floors of the hotel are filled with shattered glass and the remnants of fallen walls. The outside offers several terraces at varying levels that descend the cliff, each with an unparalleled view over the bay toward Dubrovnik Old Town and Lokrum Island. Its decorated sea-level amphitheater was used as a set for Game of Thrones. It was briefly adorned with the crest of House Baratheon for shooting, but some locals replaced that with a more geographically appropriate symbol: the crest of Hajduk, a local football club from Split, a city about 140 miles down the coast. In 2014, the property was sold at public auction. Russian Billionaire Viktor Vekselberg, known for his impressive private collection of Fabergé eggs, bought the complex for 12 million euros (about $14 million dollars). His plans for the place are slightly more modest than the original, massive design." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The hotel looks like it hasn't been updated in ages😢 There was no one at the front desk, so we had to find our room by ourselves😔. It wasn't very clean, and there was trash lying around. It felt a bit spooky too 😭😭😭 On the bright side, there are many friendly cats around, which is cool. It's kind of like a cat hangout and paradise🐱🐈 Jokes aside - Even though it might give you the creeps🥶, it's a unique experience and worth a visit☀️

A place with a very sad history, eerily beautiful and interesting. As a lover of abandoned places I was mesmerised by this empty hotel. It's incredibly large, floors upon floors of what used to be luxurious spaces ,countless rooms and many restaurants and bars destroyed in the Yugoslav wars.

Originally came here to see the location where the GoT trial by combat was filmed. Already read the stories about the abandoned hotel but was still amazed by its eerie beauty and mesmerising size. I love urban exploring and this hotel is definitely one of the coolest abandoned places i have been to, if not the best. It is gigantic, i checked a few places inside but it's dangerous to enter some parts cause the floors are broken. If you want to enter and explore you need to enter from the southern road, via the swimming pool building as the northern road is baricaded off. Originally came for the GoT spot but found the hotel itself way more interesting. Really worth the walk from Dubrovnik central, which by itself is also beautiful. Happy i could come here since its being destroyed next year.

Hotel Belvedere Dubrovnik opened in 1985 as one of the most luxurious hotels on the Adriatic coastline. With panoramic views of Dubrovnik Old Town, and 5-star service to its customers, Belvedere’s future seemed promising. In 1991, the war in Croatia terminated the touristic potential of the property. Serbian forces attacked Dubrovnik, and the hotel was demolished. Some refugees used it as a shelter during the siege of the town, but after the bombs of Yugoslav People’s Army, the hotel’s days were over. The main building is a massive complex. 18 floors and more than 200 accommodation units could host many guests in their better times. In 2014, Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg bought the ensemble at a public auction. One of the wealthiest people in the world, also famous as a collector of Fabergé eggs, cashed out 12.2 million Euros, two times less than the asking price. Not many people wanted the expensive ruin. But before HBO chose the complex as one of the primary filming locations for “Game of Thrones” series. Contracts are to be fulfilled... The new hotel will have only 50 rooms, four times less than its forerunner. With the planned investment of 150 million Euros, it will become one of the most luxurious hotels in the world! The guests of this seven-stars hotel will be arriving to their rooms by cable car, while the boat service will connect them with the Old Town. The expectation is that the new hotel Belvedere should open its doors to the public by 2021, because HBO made their final episodes of GOT in the abandoned building.

Worth visiting the debris from the war, which was definitely one of the most luxurious hotels on the Adriatic coast, before the war.

Nice views from the hotel and very close to the beautiful beach of Sveti Jakov. But hard to access this hotel by car. The hotel is abounded and don't work any more. Go there just for the view!
