The 10 Best Hotels in Montréal, According to Vogue | Vogue

"For the unacquainted: what Tiffany & Co. is to New York, Birks is to Montréal. In 2018, the 146-year-old jeweler—famed for its robin’s-egg-blue boxes and a celebrity clientele that includes Meghan Markle and Rupi Kaur—made its foray into hospitality, opening a 132-room hotel inside its century-old headquarters on Phillips Square. The building’s richly ornamented façade remains, as do exquisite interior details: original plaster moldings, Birks’ stained glass, and imposing marble columns. Two glass-enclosed floors were added up top, housing suites with panoramic terraces and downtown views. Even the entry-level rooms feel indulgent, with marble bathrooms, white damask bedcovers, and the occasional gas fireplace for frigid winter nights. The centerpiece is Restaurant Henri, designed by Montréal studio Atelier Zébulon Perron to channel early-1900s Paris, with pendant lamps, carved ceilings, and a brass bar backed by mirrored walls and a glittering lineup of cocktail coupes and Champagne magnums. Your order: escargots with confit garlic, brown butter, and panko, followed by magret de canard with Saladaise potatoes fried in duck fat and sweet-and-sour apricot sauce." - Siobhan Reid

Surprised my daughter for a night getaway and shopping at this fabulous hotel! When we checked it, we got upgraded to this incredible suite. The service was exceptional and location was perfect for shopping. Valet parking was also very handy. Gave him our bags and he went to put it in our car while we went shopping. Thank you SO much for making this an unbelievable experience ❤️

The hotel is a visual masterpiece with large ceilings and pieces of art everywhere. When you enter the hotel there is a subtle amazing scent that is sprinkled throughout. However there was one downside, the valet service treated my vehicle with disrespect. After handing over my keys to the vehicle, I went up to my hotel to drop my bags, returned outside to see the valet speeding with my vehicle. It’s not your vehicle to joyride. Other than that, it would have left a 5 star review.

We had a great stay here from the moment we arrived. Valet parking and had a great welcome and run through the hotel when we arrived to check-in. There’s a really nice bar in the reception area that we had drinks at a couple of nights. The hotel is in a good central location near to the Metro station to help you get to the various key areas around the city. The rooms are modern, clean and well appointed. We were on the top floor looking out over the front square and although busy outside we weren’t troubled with noise. We had a nice rooftop balcony from our room that you could look out over the square. We really enjoyed our stay and would stay at this hotel again.

Truly outstanding! We spent 2 nights here and felt completely spoilt from the moment we arrived. We used the valet parking (at a charge) but it was worth it as parking in the city is limited. The room was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean and we had a view of the church opposite. We dined in the hotel restaurant Henri's, food was delicious - there were 4 of us dining and each dish was perfection. Service was friendly and ambience and subtle music spot on. Check in and out was quick and efficient which is always a plus! Would definitely recommend it for a treat whilst in Montreal !

Spent 4 nights at this hotel. It was a great stay. The hotel is well located right off of Ste. Catherine street downtown. The rooms was large and well appointed. It was quiet because it faced the back of the hotel. Service was good although housekeeping was a bit spotty as they kept taking the bathrobes and not replacing them and some of the amenities in the bathroom. But most employees were wonderful and helpful. You can also do some jewelry shopping as there is an entrance to Birks jewelry store in the hotel lobby.|Would highly recommend.

**UPDATE * It’s now been a whole week since I sent my last email to upper management (Paula who you see replying to these reviews)This is supposed to be upper management, yet the complete silence speaks volumes about how little they value their guests. The poor stay was bad enough, but the lack of accountability afterwards makes it even worse. Absolutely unacceptable. They have made it abundantly clear that they do not care about their guests before, during or after their stay. Save your money and book quite literally anywhere else. ---- I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this hotel. Back in June, we visited several rooms to make arrangements for the morning of a wedding. We specifically confirmed with staff that we could have 7–9 people getting ready together in the bridal suite, with hair and makeup done in the room, and that we would arrange food for the bridal party in-suite. The sales rep was the one who suggested that we look at certain rooms as they would be perfect for the event. She even let us know that we could have champagne flutes and coffee mugs for everyone while we get ready. Based on this, we booked the room with full confidence. A week before the wedding, I called again to confirm details about catering and asked if we could store the food in the restaurant fridge and have the 10 flutes and mugs up in the room. The staff said they would get back to me for the space in the fridge and that the flutes and mugs wouldn't be a problem. When I checked in, I brought it up again and was told it was fine. I mentioned the catering three different times, and not once did anyone say it was a problem. When our food arrived, we were told that we weren’t allowed the food at all as no 'outside food' was permitted. Even though we had spoken/confirmed this on 3 seperate occasions. We spoke with one of the managers Mr. T. Roy, he was the most unaccommodating and dismissive manager I have ever encountered. His “solution” was to tell us that if we wanted to eat the food we had already ordered, we could rent a lounge — after already paying $THOUSANDS for the suite. Completely unacceptable. He also decided to tell us that suddenly, we shouldn't be more than 4 people per room and that sales would never have agreed to 7-9 people in 1 room... I had to pull out emails to prove that they were all aware that this was the whole point of our stay. In the end, our food had to be thrown out, and the bridal party had no food all day as the manager absolutely did not want to to help us and allowed is to keep 1 small try with like 5 pastries on it as an 'exception'.. Disgusting To make matters worse, the hotel never even gave us the champagne flutes and coffee mugs they had promised and I requested on 3 seperate occasions. We had to leave and buy our own. I also asked for a steamer when I checked in around 2pm and followed up 4 times throughout the day. By 9pm, I still hadn’t received it. And as if that wasn’t enough, while we were all getting ready, we called the front desk to bring up a pair of scissors so we could trim the stems of the bouquet. They never brought them. We had to resort to using nail clippers. For a supposed 5-star hotel, this was worse service than any budget hotel I’ve ever stayed at. Our fridge was also broken and nothing was done to try and fix.. Again, this is supposed to be a 5star hotel. For a bridal booking for thousands of dollars, the hotel also did nothing to make the experience special — no note, no champagne, nothing at all to acknowledge the importance of the occasion. This level of miscommunication, lack of service, and complete disregard for guests is unacceptable. What should have been a special, stress-free night before /morning of her wedding was ruined by the hotel’s incompetence. I would not recommend this hotel for weddings or special events, as their staff is unreliable, unprepared, and their policies are inconsistent. And if you’re considering booking here, it’s worth looking at the other recent 1-star reviews. You’ll see the same theme over and over: terrible service.

We had an exceptional stay at Hotel Birks in Montreal. The location is perfect, right in the heart of downtown, with Philips Square just outside our window and many of the city’s top attractions, shops, and restaurants within easy walking distance. The room was clean, beautifully designed, and very comfortable, with a lovely view of the square. What truly stood out, though, was the service. Every member of the staff we interacted with was incredibly warm, friendly, and attentive, always making us feel welcome and taken care of. The valet staff were especially helpful and courteous, making arrivals and departures seamless. From start to finish, our experience was nothing short of fantastic, and we would absolutely recommend Hotel Birks to anyone visiting Montreal.

Google
Great room on the top floor. Glad we paid extra for the larger size. Staff was very helpful to find an alternate room not next to the elevators. Some of the areas around the lobby are showing their age and heavy use. The square across the street and the immediate area attracts all sorts of 'interesting characters' Geographically the hotel is in a fantastic location between the the old town, downtown and mount royal park. We'll return.

Yelp
Checked in for my 3 year wedding anniversary. I paid almost $1,000 for one night in one of their suites with a larger balcony. From start to finish, this was a bad experience. We get into the room, and at first glance, it's fantastic. It's renovated, but the layout is super, super weird. You have to walk all the way around the bathroom to get to the front door. So odd. The room was not cleaned well. Stains on the bathroom wall, and the worst part was there were actual cobwebs in the bedroom corner. How does that even happen? When we arrived I was excited to attack the mini bar. I'm every hotel's favourite client. They had a scannable menu for the mini bar, but no mini bar in the room!! I had to go downstairs to the bar, and order a bottle of wine, but guess what? They wouldn't let me bring it up! I had to wait 15-20 minutes and then someone brought it up, and of course I had to pay the person a nice tip when I just wanted to grab it and go! Ugh! Late checkout was denied, and overall I just felt very unimportant even though I was in their most expensive room that they advertise. Will absolutely not go back here.

Yelp
My wife and I came to Montreal to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary, my wife picked this hotel based on the reviews and the photos, and we were not disappointed! It's located in the heart of metropolitan Montreal, very conveniently located near many restaurants and shopping. As you enter the beautiful lobby, there is a gorgeous restaurant and lounge to your left and an upscale jewelry boutique to your right. You walk up the stairs to the guest services and concierge who could not be more friendly and accommodating. The entire hotel has the modern yet classic look to it. Everything is beautifully decorated and updated and in great working order. We were given a room on the sixth floor, the room was spacious and elegant, it had a working fireplace and a very large shower and bathroom. The staff turned down the room without us requesting it and even stop by a second time in the evening to see if we any towels or bottled water. The hotel is very clean and again the staff are excellent. My only minor critique is when you walk up to the hotel the red carpet that is outside and the red carpet in the first entryway is very old and tattered. I don't think it would be a big deal to change it. It would improve your first impression, but as I said, the rest of the hotel was exceptional!

Yelp
We stayed here for the weekend to celebrate my birthday and had an amazing experience. The hotel is beautiful - architecture, decor, cleanliness - you couldn't ask for more. The staff is phenomenal, courteous and more than accommodating. Location is also great, we could walk all over the city and only used an uber when our feet got tired at the end of our day!! We would absolute book with them again for our next trip to Montreal.

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous hotel with a grand staircase entry way. Located right in down town Montreal, within walking distance from Saint Patrick's Basilica. A family friend stayed here when she came to town for my father's funeral. It was perfection. We came by one night for a drink but their bar has closed. The woman working the host stand told us that last call had already been called, but the signage said that they had closed at 9:30pm. It was around 11pm when we were coming by and they were kicking people out.. not sure how I feel about this. Overall, this hotel is beautiful and perfect for tourists traveling.

Yelp
Highly recommend! Will 100% stay at Hotel Birks if we return to Montreal. We stayed in a terrace room. It was nice to have an area to grab some fresh air. Loved the fireplace. The bed was super comfy. Room was exceptionally clean. Bathroom was large and gorgeous. Loved the marble and waterfall shower. Noticed that the faux plant in the bathroom was dust free which is a minute detail that many establishments overlook. To me, that means cleanliness is of the upmost importance. Excellent!

Yelp
A beautiful historic boutique hotel with great service and amenities. The restaurant Henri Brasserie inside the hotel offered a fine French dining experience and the location is ideal for experiencing all of Montreal.

Yelp
Clean, spacious and modern room in a historical building. Close to downtown, the underground mall and across from a park square. There isn't a "grand entrance" or a large area to gather/hang out in the lobby. The main check in is up a flight of stairs (or go around for an elevator), not a "super grand entrance" as I would hope for a hotel of this price range. Service: our car was promptly brought out when we asked. There was a turn down service provided for our room. No complimentary coffee in the foyer (there is a nespresso machine in the rooms with tiny expresso cups only). Noise: we were on the third floor, and given the bustling nature of the location, it was a bit loud. We heard trash cans being rolled around.

Yelp
Had such a lovely stay at Hotel Birk for the last 5 days. Along with being a beautiful hotel, it was comfortable and quiet. A few highlights: Pros: 1. Check in was nice even though it was late when we arrived. Bell men were still available to take our luggage to our room. 2. Gorgeous interior- from the entry of the hotel to the inside of our room it is beautifully decorated. The lights, the bed, the fireplace in our room. Everything was elegant and charming. 3. Great location for restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Having a restaurant right next to the hotel is nice, but there are also many restaurants within walking distance. The Bay is kitty korner from the hotel and of course Birks is a quick right after you walk in the door of the hotel. We walked to and from hockey games at the Centre Bell in no time. 4. So comfortable! Loved the bed and how cozy it was. Sad to leave it! We heard nothing in our room- it was perfectly quiet. 5. Clean!! Housekeeping did a magnificent job of making everything sparkle. Cons: Really just one tiny one. This is a smaller hotel so they only offer a really limited menu after hours. Some preplanning could avoid this being an issue at all. We arrived quite late so we just ordered a pizza from a local restaurant. I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else while in Montreal.

Yelp
Gotta experience this one - luxury, unique, comfort and great service throughout. Did I mention the atmosphere in the restaurant - check it out!

Yelp
Hotel Birks needs to stop masquerading as a five-star hotel. Carpeting in our bedroom was stained and fraid all along the baseboard. Mattress was old -- mattress top was down to two inches or so. A simple request at the front desk for more coffee pods (they provide only two in the room) and two more water bottles went completely ignored. Does that sound like 5 stars. On the plus side: room and bathroom were large and noise was well contained. The restaurant downstairs was good, especially the bar. We received great service and perfectly crafted cocktails every time we stopped by -- but the positives alone would not make me want to stay there again.

Yelp
Very nice room. Had everything we needed. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The view we had was of the building behind it, but we didn't care because this place is surrounded by tall buildings. The only problem we had was with the fireplace; it was creating an odor that was unpleasant. Enjoyed breakfast and dinner at Restaurant Henri on the first floor. Very good food and service.

Yelp
Amazing hotel. Definitely spring for one of the bigger rooms. Spa and restaurant are fantastic. Location very good. Probably wouldn't stay anywhere else in Montreal, personally.

Yelp
This place is stunning!!! It's cozy, comfy, and luxurious. Everyone was super polite from the restaurant staff, to the doorman, and receptionist. I highly recommend. I will be back!

Yelp
Not sure why the low ratings....on other websites (Expedia, TripAdvisor) this hotel has great reviews. The hotel is old, but in immaculate condition. The rooms are a mix of traditional and modern and the bathroom is super nice. Best shower I have ever used. The location is great. So many nearby places for dining, drinking, etc. The nearby mall offers many dining options as well (and a place to get out of the cold). Would definitely stay here again when in Montreal!

Yelp
I was on my vacation around Canada and chose this hotel for my stay in Montreal. My friend recommended me to stay in this area. I booked the hotel and was very excited. I took a train ride from Quebec City. The station was very close to this hotel which was a great plus. The hotel staff was excellent. Very helpful. The room was a bit sad. It was a lot smaller than I expected and the entrance was too narrow that it felt very tight. I took a bath and was disappointed. I turned on hot water but warm water only. There wasn't any lotion or a in dining room menu in the room for which I had to call for that. I can't say I recommend this hotel but I do recommend this location.

Yelp
Sept. 7-11. Arrived late so not looking for an outlet for charging until midnight. While looking for an outlet behind the sofa, found a dirty sock; then I noticed spills on the rug, little hairs in the bathroom and the blackout curtains were off the rod and didn't close. (I was alone and pricey room with fireplace was designed for 4.) No information in the room about room service, ice, etc. Next day mgt. cleaned and sent wine and sweets. (Instead, a complementary night would have been appropriate.) Room view was over HVAC roof, dirty windows facing room and a boarded up window. Restaurant average for breakfast and dinner but wait staff was very good. Not a 5 star establishment as it's very understaffed. It could be 5 star with not much effort. Niceties like turn down service or concierge are nonexistent. Even grand front staircase needed to be swept most of the time. Great older doorman (who knew everything) and the spa was Swiss owned and fabulous. On Saturday, a wedding filled the elevator area with carts of luggage and Costco food. Great location.

Yelp
Hotel did not refund my money when they were CLOSED during my upcoming stay due to Covid-19. Instead they offered me a credit. Terrible customer service

Meiray K.

Yelp
This hotel is beautiful!! Classic and modern at the same time. Young man at the front desk Rona (I'm not sure how to spell it) but he is amazing!

Jeff S.

Yelp
BIG problems. I wouldn't be writing this review if management had taken my complaints seriously - which they didn't. I stayed at this hotel for two nights last week. The first thing I noticed, which is impossible to miss, is that there is major, noisy construction directly outside the entrance of the hotel. Streets are fenced off, making it hard to walk around the exterior of the hotel, and there are huge pieces of heavy equipment running all hours of the day and night, causing a lot of noise and rumbling - not to mention the work crews yelling outside all night. It would be nice if the hotel warned guests in advance, so they can make an informed decision about staying there. Second, the rooms feature automated fireplaces that are supposed to add heat and a nice, tranquil light, but the fireplace in our room didn't work at all. I mentioned it to the Front Desk, and they said it would be repair - which it was NOT. I mentioned it again the second day, and who knows if it ever got fixed. When I got home from my visit to Montreal, I immediately emailed management to let them know about these issues, and the responses I received were unsatisfactory. Instead of asking what they can do to make up for the deficiencies in their hotel, they basically said, "Hey, better luck next time!" There are many choices of hotels downtown, so I would look elsewhere. If something happens during your stay, don't expect them to actually care.
