6 Best Day Trips from Barcelona, and the Itinerary to Know for Each | Condé Nast Traveler

"Some stay overnight at this property purely for the breakfast. After all, this is the hotel sibling of the three-Michelin-starred restaurant, El Celler de Can Roca. Hotel Boutique Casa Cacao Girona

"Why book? Some stay overnight purely for the breakfast. After all, this is the hotel sibling of the three-Michelin-starred restaurant, El Celler de Can Roca. There’s also a cacao workshop next door—visible (but not smell-able) via a curious glass wall in the lobby—as well as top quality non-edibles, such as all-suite bedrooms and a garden-inspired roof terrace. Set the scene Many guests also have a reservation for El Celler de Can Roca, the lucky buggers. What a way to do the slumber phase in between your evening eating and your morning eating. Other overnighters are here for the charms of Girona herself. Whether your goal is stomach-first or sights-first, the terrace is the place to be. It feels unexpectedly vast compared to the size of the hotel, and it boasts some of the best views of Girona’s colorful riverside apartment buildings and the Old Town. Since opening, the terrace has earned a cult following among locals, too, with plenty of residents popping up for a sceney brunch. The backstory It’s another tasty story in the Roca family tree. This time, it was the winning recipe of pastry chef Jordi Roca and his sister-in-law Anna Payet (the wife of oldest brother, Joan). Their vision was to create a place to stay where quality food ran throughout its DNA. So, alongside 15 bedrooms, the building houses a chocolate atelier, and has a café-bar across the street. The rooms The 15 suites are a study in less-is-more. Apart from when it comes to their dimensions, that is—they actually feel huge, particularly the bathrooms. You’ll find several coffee tables, a sofa, and plenty of space to put (explode) your suitcase. It all feels very relaxing and soothing; the Headspace app in bedroom form. Food is never far away—there are namesake Casa Cacao chocolates on the bedside tables, for instance. Food and drink Brunch and dinner are available, but breakfast is The Dish. Created by Joan Roca, El Celler’s head chef, staff refer to it as a ‘gastronomic breakfast’—which in layperson’s terms means you will not go hungry. There are four courses: yoghurt and fresh fruit, cured meats, a poached egg fried in breadcrumbs like a croquette (devilishly good), and a cake-stand full of chocolately good stuff (yes, it’s cake for breakfast, and we’re here for it). It all arrives with a big bottle of fresh orange juice, a hot chocolate made from Jordi Roca’s 75% cocoa, and as many coffees as you need to mentally prepare yourself for a day’s street-pounding. Or more eating. That’s Girona for you. The neighborhood/area The location is blissfully quiet; you’re hidden down a side street that pops back out into civilization just before the river. Go over and you’ll cross the threshold of the Old Town. Stay this side, and you’re a five-minute wander from Rocambolesc. You might be thinking, Roca… what? Again, this is Girona, and most wonderful things have the Roca name in them. Rocambolesc is the zany offshoot brand by Jordi Roca, El Celler’s genius-brained dessert chef, and his wife Ale Rivas, also an El Celler alumnus. Their project began as a soft-serve ice cream shop, then a candy store, and in summer 2023 they opened their first savory outpost called a bikineria. It sells bikinis, but not the type you’re thinking of. Rather, Catalan bikinis—which are in fact grilled cheese sandwiches, often with ham. There you have it. To find all three shops, head to the corner of Carrer de Santa Clara and Carrer de les Hortes—then smile, relive your childhood, and eat some more. The service Slick, up-to-speed and very polite. Happy to book cabs when needed; equally happy to bring about a seamless outdoor table change when enormous wasps suddenly decided to join for breakfast. Eco effort Some green accessories in the bathrooms, such as bamboo toothbrushes, but it was a shame to see single-use Natura Bissé toiletries rather than refillable bottles. Accessibility One room is fully accessible and adapted, as is the terrace. Anything left to mention? A tiny hotel with a show-stopping terrace and Catalan culinary gods at the helm—what’s not to love here? Our only niggle was a personal one—we ate so much the night before, that we almost didn’t want four whole courses of breakfast. Sorry guys, next time we’ll eat harder." - Gemma Askham

The hotel is a boutique four story historical building located perfectly in the center of town. We had a lovely, good size suite on the 3rd floor looking over the canal/river. Although it’s a historic building it has been beautifully renovated in an upscale contemporary style and we loved it. Breakfast, on the rooftop terrace was a gourmet feast. I started with a great cappuccino and then we were served a four course breakfast: 1: home made porridge with some kind of oats, grains topped with fresh figs, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, slivered almonds and cocoa beans. 2: charcuterie platter of meats and cheese with best focaccia ever. 3: a poached egg in a panko crumb shell with béchamel sauce, baby zucchini, hazelnuts. 4: a three layer chocolate tower with almond macaroons, mini cannolis with chocolate stuffing and watermelon sorbet with coconut flavored whipped cream and a pot of cold thick chocolate drink. Everything looked beautiful and was delicious. The staff at reception and at breakfast were all wonderful. They have a sister 3-star Michelin restaurant in town called El Celler de Can Roca which has twice been voted Best restaurant in the World and we dined there one night. If you can get a reservation, typically sold out 11 months in advance, it will be an experience you will never forget.

Having stayed here for 5-7 nights both this year and last year is a clear indication that we’d rather be here than anywhere else when we’re in Girona.|It is located in front of Plaza Catalunya which is in between the old town and the shopping area nearby. It is less busy and less crowded compared to the old town area (which is only a 5 min walk). |The rooms are spacious and complete with modern amenities. Their breakfast spread is the best we’ve had in all the hotels we’ve been to. |I would like to thank Ms. Anna, Julia, Karim and the rest of the staff who are very accommodating to us and also to our friends who are not even checked in. Their kindness and friendliness weighs more than the amenities that the hotel provides, which are already superb. |Thank you once again. We look forward to coming back.

Our experience at casa cacao was such a treat. The room had stunning design features and super comfortable bed (and pillows). There were luxurious towels and bath products, as well as very stylish bathrobes, but these were unfortunately not a generous enough size for our non-designer bodies. Breakfast was a delicious banquet, and there was also an option to vary the menu on our second day. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The hotel is well placed for exploring both the old town and the newer shopping area. Hope to return one day.

What a wonderful experience ❤️ spending our special weekend at Hotel Casa Cacao. This boutique property contains only 15, clean thoughtfully designed and furnished suites. From check in the whole stay is warm, generous and personal. | We took advantage of the Terrace for evening cocktails and a light tapas style lunch during our 3 night stay. The Terrace is also where the "best hotel breakfast in spain" is served and it certainly was as billed absolutely whimsical, delicious and plentiful. The perfect start to the day, especially for the walking required to really discover Girona. |The hotels location on the edge of the city and across the canal from the old town is ideal to really discover Girona by foot. |The hotel chocolate factory/shop offers some great gift ideas other than chocolate although the chocolates are an absolute delight. |In conclusion the hotel offers incredible value for money given the large room size, gastronome breakfast included in the price, location of the hotel and of course the high level of service on offer.|The hotel suites is not set up for business travellers, this hotel is purely about relaxation and indulgence.

Beautifully designed hotel in Girona. It felt like coming home to a beautiful apartment that was very calm and relaxing with a very comfortable bed.||The breakfast was an event with multiple courses, especially celebrating chocolate at the end. The roof terrace is also a lovely place for drinks and snacks.||The hotel is in a good location within easy walking distance to the old town and cathedral and many wonderful bars and restaurants close by

Enjoyed our stay in Hotel Casa Cacao. The room was lovely and very airy. The staff were extremely nice at reception. We had the brunch after arriving and food was very good. However the amount of cava and wine included in the price was very small. When we asked for a top up of cava we were charged and extra 14 euro which we felt was very mean. I think the hotel is very pricy and that extra charge was disappointing ( small touches mean so much ) Also we didn't realise it was the same same food offered again the next morning for breakfast.( the same brunch) We were offered alternatives but it was disorganised. They should have a breakfast menu available also ,as the brunch is far too heavy for breakfast time, fine for lunch time but not early in the morning. A different breakfast menu would be nice.|I left a purse behind on checking out, and the night porter send it to me in a a taxi. That was very nice of him and we appreciated it very much.. All in all a lovely stay, bought some of their chocolates before we left and am saving them for a special occasion.

Staff was super friendly. One of the guys at the front desk would take time to give us dinner recommendations and go the extra mile to make things easier for us. The rooms were super clean and housekeeping even left us chocolates by our nightstand. The hotel also had nice furniture and a remote to close the blinds which was pretty nice. This hotel is right by several great restaurants and everything is in close walking distance. I’d definitely recommend this hotel if you’re staying in Girona.

We stayed in a suite at Casa Cacao for two nights. Main reason was a dinner at El Celler de Can Roca. Hotel is centrally located and within walking distance to all attractions in Girona. Nevertheless to reach El Celler de Can Roca you must take a taxi. Hotel helped to reserve in advance and the driver showed up exactly on time.||The hotel is very nice with just s couple of rooms on each floor. You can expect all the usual amenities, including free mini bar. The terrace on the top floor is also a great spot to have a drink. Here breakfast is served.||My only two points of criticism: service at breakfast is painstakingly slow and inconsistent. We liked the food, but it took way too long. Finally our suite overlooking Placa Catalunya just had one small window, therefore making the room somewhat dark. Otherwise nothing to complain.||Keep in mind that there is no private parking. You need to park in an underground garage nearby. During our trip the garage was completely full, so it took us almost 45 minutes to find an open space.
