Hotel Casa del Coliseo (Cartagena, Colombia) 8 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Around here we’re fans of every kind of extraordinary hotel, and that doesn’t always mean novelty and experimentation. Casa del Coliseo, in the historic city of Cartagena, Colombia, is a reminder that classic hospitality, executed with style and confidence, will never go out of fashion. It’s a 17th-century residence in a perfectly central location, and though its 12 rooms retain original features like timbered ceilings, they’ve been renovated to current luxury-hotel standard and decorated in a style that blends contemporary boutique design and classic colonial-era atmosphere — it helps that the proprietor himself is a designer, the Colombian-born and Miami-based Juan Carlos Arcila-Duque." - Tablet Hotels

Our stay was absolutely wonderful! The hotel’s location was fantastic — right in the heart of everything. You can easily walk anywhere in the Centro Histórico within just 5–6 minutes. The place was spotless, the breakfast was excellent, and the staff were incredibly kind and helpful. They assisted us with everything we needed, from answering questions to helping us plan our daily activities and recommending what to do in Cartagena.|A special thanks to Martin, who helped us a lot and was always generous with his time and advice. We truly appreciated his support!

Unfortunately the impression of the hotel started off on the wrong foot when we were charged approximately $63 more than the agreed-upon rate. The rate was quoted in USD. The charge was pesos which we had no issue with. The problem was their conversion which was not based on any current world exchange rate — or even close. They argued that the world XE Exchange Rate app, which gives real-time conversion rates, was irrelevant. Using either the exchange rates from the date we booked or the rate from the day we checked in, their rate wasn’t even close. We could have avoided this by using a third party site (e.g. Booking.com or TripAdvisor) and paying them, versus the hotel. Usually I like to book directly with the hotel and help maximize their profit, but this worked to our disadvantage. Lesson learned. The other issues with the hotel were two-fold. Rooms are a bit hit and miss with respect to quality. The first room we were assigned was extremely small with no chair - only place one could sit was on the bed. They offered us a different room which we initially thought was good. However, once settled in for the night, we were having trouble breathing. The mold smell was so intense we couldn’t sleep. We accepted a room on the second floor, wary of the possible street noise, but it was much better. The other main issue was that there was no common air conditioned room. We were staying at the hotel with another couple so congregating together outside our rooms was not possible. Cartagena is hot and very humid.

My stay at Casa del Coliseo was nothing short of spectacular! The staff exceeded my expectations and went above and beyond to ensure my stay was comfortable, entertaining, relaxing, and safe. The team was always ready to address any of my needs and provided great recommendations for food, bars, and other activities to do within the walled city. My girlfriend and stepmom needed medical attention during our stay and the concierge team and other staff coordinated an in-room doctor's visit to help address their medical needs. The rooftop pool was great to relax in and provided great privacy for sunbathing. Also, the hotel breakfast and snacks were delicious! ||Gracias a Martin, Bryan, Shari y a todo el equipo por ser parte de un experiencia inolvidable en Cartagena!

Beautiful building and an excellent location to visit the old town. Although well isolated sometimes the noises of the street reach you in the night. Very friendly and helpfull staff. Although one gets a lot, also a bit pricy (like all Cartagena).

The hotel food and pool were great, but my wife had her jewelry stolen from our room and we were left empty handed. It's a frustrating experience to say the least.

What an incredible experience! My husband and I stayed at Hotel Casa Del Coliseo for our anniversary, and I cannot say enough about it! The building and decor are gorgeous! We stayed in a Superior Double Room with small balconies that overlooked the corner of the street with stunning view of the beautiful buildings and streets surrounding it. The bed was comfortable, and the a/c and ceiling fan brought much needed comfort from the early summer humid heat. The bathroom as spacious and also beautiful. Hot water was always plentiful.||The breakfast was always delicious, and the service was great! We like to have our own private happy hours in our room, which was simple to pull off because there is a small convenience store right across the street.||But most of all, I have to be sure to gush about our host and concierge, Martin! He greeted us with a smile a sweet fruity beverage and showed us so many restaurants and other sites for us to experience during our stay. He was there every day to answer our questions and provide more recommendations. Every single restaurant he suggested was PHENOMENAL! I’m already planning my return for a girls trip within the next year, and I wouldn’t dare stay anywhere else!||As others have stated, there is a bit of noise from the street, but from what I’ve experienced, that would be true of any place you’d stay within the walled city. The streets are lively every night. The only other thing I’d bring attention to is that there is very little storage. The large chest that holds the mini bar, safe, and refrigerator does have a bar on top with hangers, but it doesn’t provide space to hang long maxi dresses. We both lived out of our suitcases, which was totally fine for us.||I cannot wait to return to Cartagena and stay at this hotel!
