Editor's Picks: New Hotels and Spas Worth Traveling For

"Sintra, a resort town just a half-hour drive west of Lisbon, nails that perfect Euro beach, castle ruins, and fields of flowers trifecta. It’s also where I stumbled upon the insanely beautiful home of a Portuguese aristocrat who has recently converted the guesthouses of his royal palace into Casa Holstein Quinta São Sebastião, an airy hotel where no two rooms are alike, but all 13 have their own terrace, garden views, and private forest access."

Casa Holstein Quinta São Sebastiao (Sintra, Portugal) 13 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The continuing ascendance of Portuguese tourism is bringing some spectacular places to global attention — among them is Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, on the Atlantic coast just to the west of Lisbon. It’s here that you’ll find not just spectacular landscapes but spectacular Islamic architecture as well, including the medieval Castle of the Moors as well as Sintra Palace, a truly unique 500-year-old aristocratic residence. And not far from Sintra Palace is a lodging that’s only slightly less lavish: the stately, sedate, pistachio-hued guest house known as Casa Holstein Quinta de São Sebastião." - Tablet Hotels

We had our welcome party for our wedding at Casa Holstein and it was so magical. It was difficult to find a space in Sintra that could accommodate all our guests for the party as most of the hotels in the town are small. Casa Holstein has a perfect central location and beautiful property. Nuno, property manager, was very communicative and helpful with everything that we needed. Our guests staying here also had a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend this property for anyone that is looking for a hotel in Sintra or hosting an event!

From the moment we arrived, this place felt magical. There's a warmth and charm to the house that photos simply don’t capture—it’s even more beautiful in person. The location is fantastic, right in town and within easy reach of all the palaces and local spots, yet it still feels peaceful and welcoming. The breakfast was lovely, and I was so impressed by how often the staff refreshed everything—every couple of minutes, they were making sure things were full and fresh. The whole place is sweet, cozy, and clearly cared for with love. Our only small downside was that our room was right next to the breakfast area, so we had to keep the windows closed for privacy, and it did get a bit noisy one night with kids running around. There was also a consistent dripping sound from what seemed like an AC unit, which made it sound like it was raining. But honestly, these were minor compared to the overall experience. I truly fell in love with this place, and would stay here again in a heartbeat.

An old, rundown, poorly maintained hotel that does produce some level of tranquility and calmness but not at these prices. First of all we had problems with electricity in our room and had to change rooms for one night until they figured out the cause. The cause was never communicated to us but you could tell it was just the general state of electric infrastructure of this place since I bet it did not see any general maintenance since at least the 1980s. The rooms don’t utilize any modern ways of locking doors or accessing amenities - it’s literally all the same like it was in the XIX century - spring locks, bar locks and latches on windows, visible spaces between doors and the frame and doorposts. The faucets in the bathroom were loose, the door to the shower screeched like hell and the couches were worn out. The carpets were almost invisible - that’s how worn out they were. The sheets, robes, towels and bathrooms and rooms were generally clean. Since it is an old never renovated villa with old wooden doors and windows you can hear everything that your neighbors are doing - including watching TikToks on their phones. The surrounding area and gardens were an absolute forgotten mess like out of a post apocalyptic novel. The pool was greenish dirty and sunbeds were all dusty and stained. The area around the pool didn’t see a sweep in a few weeks. The breakfast was very modest. No warm dishes of any kind, not even scrambled eggs. A few choices of ham and cheese, hard boiled eggs and some tomatoes and cucumber. The bread was fresh and tasty. Breakfast was served surprisingly late from 9 to 11 am. The staff at the front desk spoke English depending on the person on duty - from very good, almost native, to very poor, struggling. They visibly cling to the historic side of the place but it does require a general renovation as it is not worth the money in its current state.

This historic place recently made into a boutique hotel has a beautiful old world charm that matches the rest of Sintra. The grounds are unique and lovely. Nuno was amazing handling everything from the desk to luggage to any issues and recommendations. He is an asset to the place. Breakfast was a beautiful collection of fresh breads, fruits, cheeses/meat, yogurt and hard boiled eggs. Breakfast can be taken inside or on the balcony with a fabulous view. Now, for the downside: we reserved the supreme suite with a terrace. It was located down the hill with 90 steps down and 13 up at the end. There is no elevator, but Nuno helped with our bags. It is a trek and not recommended for anyone with mobility concerns. Room 13 had an actual terrace with glass doors opening up to it. We were in 14 and had access to a garden on the side, but this was not as pictured in the hotel ad. Our bedroom was very small, but the bed was comfortable with nice sheets and towels in the bath. It would have been nice to have coffee in the room, but they opted for tea and teapot instead. Overall, charming and unique place worth visiting. I would recommend.

Great boutique hotel off the beaten path in Sintra. My little cottage was gorgeous. Nicely furnished and very quaint. With a bathroom worthy of a king. The inn is right near lots of good restaurants behind City Hall. Including COMO restaurant. The hotel has 2 different gates, which give it an exclusive feel. Very private, too. It's a little tricky to find the place, but once you do, it's a piece of cake. Breakfast was fairly basic, arguably too basic. But nobody really needs breakfast anyway except a coffee! Definitely Recommended. Top notch.

We stayed at Casa Holstein for only 2 days and wish we had stayed a week! What fabulous location and beautiful hotel, in well maintained gorgeous grounds. Our suite was perfect, with lovely furnishings. Breakfast was lovely, fresh pastries and cheeses, sitting out on the porch. We will definitely stay again if in the area and highly recommend.

The hotel looks much better on the pictures than it is in reality. The reception on day of arrival was good with personal touch. Thereafter staff is simply not interested at all. Rooms not easy to reach with luggage it is dangerous and hardly possible especially when it is raining to take the steep external staircase to your room. The room itself is cute, but it really is not clean at all and a lot of mold on the walls and the windows which is not healthy. The breakfast is a big joke. The choice is very limited, not restocked and the very old chairs you can hardly sit on. At check out the receptionist asked us if everything was okay which I denied but he did not even ask what was wrong, just said goodbye. So not really a customer friendly approach. The only plus is free parking on the property if you are able to find the property at all. There are no signs to indicate the hotel entrance.
