"Originally built ca. 1913 as an alpine sanatorium in Zuoz, the 68-room Hotel Castell offers a full-on immersion in art. Its owner—the Swiss artist and collector Ruedi Bechtler—has invited a number of big-name artists to develop projects on site, from Pipilotti Rist (who designed the Red Bar with Zurich architect Gabrielle Hächlero) to Tadashi Kawamata (see sun terrace and pool) to James Turrell (you’ll want to spend some time sky-gazing in his open-air installation, Skyspace Piz Utèr)."

"Built in 1913, this sanatorium-turned-art-hotel today offers an impressive collection of contemporary art, including paintings, sculpture, permanent exhibitions, and regular “Art Weekends.” But Turrell’s skyspace Piz Utèr (2005) is what really draws in the art seekers to this castlelike estate. The rotunda stone skyspace showcases the changing mountain skies, best experienced in contemplative silence and taken with a dose of fresh Swiss Alps air."

We had a wonderful stay! Huge thanks to Alicia for serving us into the early hours with such a great mood – it really made our night. Stepanka was also incredibly kind and welcoming. The hammam was amazing, the food was delicious, and the staff were all so friendly. The overall vibe was fun and relaxed – we truly enjoyed every moment. And the art throughout the hotel was a whole feature in itself – absolutely stunning and added so much character to the place!

For Switzerland rates are very OK (we paid approx 330/night) for such nice location and with all the amenities they have. The rooms are good, and beds are comfortable (for all three rooms we booked). Nothing super luxury but well equipped. The staff was exceptionally friendly at the reception but also during breakfast and dinner. We had dinner at the hotel as well one night and this was a great surprise….for moderate prices (that also counts for wine prices) you get high quality dishes that are not only tasting great but also loom great.

It is always a pleasure to come back to this place. there is a special mix of history, contemporary art, kindness of staff and a stunning nature around. The installation by James Turell makes us to come back again and again, year after year. It is actually one of our secret places that we would love to keep only for ourselves.

I've been coming here almost every year since childhood. The staff is always incredibly accommodating and kind. The ski-slope is right next to the hotel, so you only have to carry your skies to the entrance and get on the slope directly from there. The Hammam is heavenly. Not only does it look beautiful but it also provides everything you need to wind down. Also, I don't think I've had a single bad meal here. Everything they serve is delicious. They also provide some great options for those with dietary restrictions.

My wife and I stayed at the Castell earlier this month and had a wonderful time. The location is breathtaking; we were happy to have a rental car so could visit lots of highlights nearby. The Castell provided us with bus and lift tickets which allowed us to take a gondola up a nearby mountain and then take a wonderful two hour hike which the hotel manager recommended. The hotel itself is unique; a combination of elegant and historic area along with the fantastic modern art collection of the owner, which is spread throughout the entire hotel. Our room was furnished with modern design as well and featured a walk in closet that would be extremely useful during ski season. The bed was incredibly comfortable by the way. The staff was highly professional and welcoming - they spoke English perfectly with my wife and humored me as I practiced my German on them. We had a fine meal in the dining room and truly enjoyed the buffet breakfast. A real highlight for me and my wife was the Hammam, a Turkish bath house experience that was both relaxing and romantic. To cap off the day, we got to watch the Europa Cup games along with a few other guests in the small, in-house theater. Switzerland won, so what could be better than that!

We stayed here two nights and the most memorable moments were in the Restaurant and when we were hiking in the vicinity. The area is truly sensational for outdoors and mountaineering. The restaurant and the bar menu is very very good and they serve delicious seasonal food. Even if you are hiking by or staying somewhere else in Zuoz, I would recommend eating there. The room was an enormous let down. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, the pillows were very old and flat. The lighting situation could be more simple. Every time one had to go to the bathroom at night, you have to switch on the main light. Despite being aware of the high end customers it is attracting, we felt like our room was the smallest one tucked away in the corner with very minimal amenities. It felt like the same care was not shown. Do not get me wrong, the hotel itself is beautiful and I am sure 99% of the rooms are also wonderful to stay in but ours "Standard" felt like a makeshift box just to get in more customers to stay in. My recommendation would be to get an upgrade from the "Standard" room so that you truly experience the hotel.

It is in a beautiful surrounding. The infrastructure is elegant. The service is very good. Rooms are not very spatious as they are standard rooms, nevertheless the price is really astronomical for me. The food is very good but again, truly overpriced.

Full enjoyable experience. We are a young couple and we spend 3 nights at the hotel. Our experience was amazing, the Hotel Staff is very friendly, attentive and helpful. The Hammam is wonderful, very clean, tidy, perfect for relaxing. The breakfast has a great variety of food, with good quality local products. I recommended the cheeseboard with a glass of local wine. The four-course dinners are also fabulous and the options for vegetarians are really good. The stage included tickets pass for trains and cable cars in the region, and also the pick-up service.

We went here specifically to get Raclette. The server was very pleasant, and spoke excellent English (and several other languages, he seemed to speak to each table in a different tongue). The Raclette was very tasty, though cooled off too quickly for my taste--but that may just be the way the dish is. The restaurant is nice, but feels like a hotel restaurant (which it is) rather than a dining establishment.
