Amazing value for money in a fabulous location in Madrid. The room and bathroom were spacious, clean, and comfortable, the service was friendly, and did I mention the great location?
I booked a room at the Hotel Catalonia las Cortes after seeing good reviews on Trip Advisor. I prepaid about 240 euros for three nights, which was low relative to other hotels I priced in the same area of Madrid.
My room was ready on my arrival, and I was pleased to discover a large (for Europe) room with king bed and attractive linens. The room was air conditioned (very important in blazing Madrid) and had a safe, television, and minibar. The bathroom was also very large and featured a bidet, full tub/shower, and sink with plentiful counter space. The room was nicely made up each day, and there was evening turn-down service that included a lovely chocolate truffle on the nightstand. For light sleepers, know that the room was absolutely quiet inside (did not have a window overlooking the street) and had blackout curtains to keep light out.
Breakfast is served every morning in the lobby dining room and costs 12 euros per person. The breakfast is buffet style and was pretty good; I liked that it featured a lot of typical Spanish foods, like sausages and tortillas espanolas. However, I only ate there one morning as I felt there was better value eating breakfast elsewhere. There is also a lobby bar, apparently specializing in gins and tonic, but I did not drink there during my stay. There were rarely more than a handful of people there.
WiFi is free in the hotel with a password provided on check-in.
Staff was very pleasant. When you pass the main desk to enter or exit the hotel, staff call out greetings (if you're not sure how to respond, just say "hola"). Although everyone seemed more comfortable using Spanish, the staff was fully bilingual and were using English with patrons as needed.
Finally, what makes the Hotel Catalonia las Cortes truly fantastic is its location. I found it to be easy walking distance to many of my favorite parts of Madrid. It's about two blocks off the Plaza Santa Ana, which is a great place to sit outdoors and have tapas and drinks. It's walkable to all three major art museums, the Plaza Mayor, and it's also near a Metro station (Anton Martin). The only location drawback is that it takes two Metro exchanges to get between the hotel and the airport.
I highly recommend the Hotel Catalonia las Cortes. When I return to Madrid, it will the first place I check for availability.
