As frequent travelers and members of a resort in Mexico, we always appreciate quality service and fair treatment for all guests, regardless of membership status. Unfortunately, our recent experience fell far short of expectations.
Service:
The service was extremely disappointing. Despite tipping generously when deserved, we encountered rude and unprofessional staff throughout our stay—with one notable exception: Luis at the pool bar, who was polite, attentive, and truly seemed to enjoy his job. He provided consistent, excellent service and made our time at the pool enjoyable.
Restaurant Dress Code Confusion:
We experienced inconsistency with the restaurant dress code. At check-in, we were told that men were required to wear closed-toe shoes, while women could wear sandals. However, when I arrived for dinner in sandals with my dress, I was denied entry—despite other guests (including men) wearing open-toe shoes without issue. This inconsistency and favoritism toward certain guests, presumably members, was frustrating and unfair.
Buffet Incident:
During lunch at the family-side buffet, I wore shorts over my swimsuit, similar to other guests. We were seated without issue, but minutes later, the same staff member asked me to leave, stating that my exposed shoulders had caused a complaint. This abrupt change in policy, seemingly applied only to me, felt arbitrary and unprofessional.
Food & Drinks:
Food: The dining options were extremely underwhelming—bland, lacking flavor, and overall a 2/10. Ironically, the best meal we had was during our off-site excursion.
Drinks: There was absolutely no consistency in drink quality, even with a specialty cocktail menu. Luis at the pool bar was the only bartender capable of making drinks properly and consistently.
Spa Experience:
Our spa appointment was mishandled. Despite having a written confirmation for a 1:00 PM massage, the spa staff insisted our booking was for 12:30 PM. Fortunately, we arrived early and were able to keep the appointment, though the error could have cost us our session. That said, the massage therapists were excellent and very professional.
Accommodations:
The swim-up room was beautiful, and the housekeeping staff provided impeccable service. We were pleased with the room itself, though the overall resort experience dampened our enjoyment.
Excursion Highlight:
We booked the Bayahibe Runners excursion through Amstar, and it was by far the highlight of our trip. The tour was well-organized, and the experience exceeded expectations—one of the best excursions we’ve ever had.
Overall Experience:
Despite being seasoned travelers who visit different destinations twice a year, this was the first time we felt ready to leave halfway through our stay. The poor service, inconsistent policies, and disappointing dining made this our worst resort experience in the past 4–5 years.
We chose this resort based on glowing reviews, which now seem heavily biased toward members. After this experience, we would never consider returning, even if offered a complimentary stay.
Final Note:
If you enjoy bland food, lackluster entertainment, and an atmosphere of favoritism, this resort might be for you. Otherwise, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere for your vacation.
