Hotel Colonial CR

We stayed in room 25, not too noisy til 6am. We had AC. The pool Is more of an architectural feature really… it is closely situation to the central attractions. The breakfast was authentic, non ultra processed and I had two helpings of the cheeses quesadillas which were, Great! Handy as a transition hotel after such a long flight

The hotel was centrally located and the restaurant was very convenient to have on site. The room was basic, but it was clean and was a good temperature. The best part of the stay was the staff! Mauricio was very knowledgeable about the area and helpful when it came to our millions of questions about Costa Rica. I would definitely stay there again.

Do not stay at this hotel, there are plenty of better options in the same area for a similar price. The service is terrible. Unfortunately I can’t upload video here. But they put me in a room next to what seemed like a party or bar, with extremely loud music. I asked to move rooms, and was told I had to pay another $60 in addition to the $64 I had already paid. Yet on booking.com the room was the same price as the room I had already paid for. They said this was because the room had an additional double bed, then when I asked to move to a room that had one double bed, the manager suddenly was unreachable. The receptionist didn’t seem to care at all and made no effort to rectify the situation, in fact she said she didn’t realise music was playing, which I find very hard to believe. Anyway, when she found out, she did nothing to help. In addition the hotel was dirty, 10 mins after checking in I saw a rodent run into the restaurant, and there was construction going on, which they did not make known at the time of booking and made no effort to clean up. I ended up leaving the hotel after just a few hours and staying at Hotel Balmoral, which I’d definitely recommend.

The hotel is dirty, noisy and not helpful at all. The lady on the check-in counter was very not accommodating. She seems doesn’t know what she’s doing. The food is bland and the pool is dirty. The AC is not working!! Don’t even consider coming to this hotel. Such a waste of money!

Nice place with local history flavor. Service is great and location is convenient. Multiple amenities. Warm feel.

The photographer for the website should have an award for presenting the hotel in such a good light, appearing much more spacious and beautiful than it really is. The historic atmosphere, kind staff, and good food along with central location are the pluses. Many reviews mention street noise because it is intense. We originally booked a suite (the largest room, and one of those with A/C), but after one night we asked to change to a courtyard room to get away from street noise. (The A/C could not disguise it). We were able to change--none available with A/C--but there was no refund for the much less expensive room. If I were to rate this hotel, I would say 2.5 stars at best. I would certainly recommend it, but know what you're getting into. Rooms are very clean, wifi is good, safety is good. Many guests came to enjoy the pool, but there were only 4 chairs, and only 2 that weren't broken (see photo)|The hotel provided a driver to meet us at the airport, which worked out well.
