Hotel Continental

"Alright, back up: Give us the wide-angle view of this place. The fourth-generation, family-owned Hotel Continental is one of the oldest and most established hotels in Oslo, but it's not just its pedigree that makes it a notable stay: Located on the doorstep of some of the city's main tourist attractions like the Royal Castle, the parade street Karl Johan, the National Gallery, the waterfront, and the Aker Brygge neighborhood, it's in a veritable hotbed of activity. Plus, the National Theatre transport station is on the other side of the street. (Basically, you can jump on the express train from the airport, and be in your hotel room 30 minutes later.) Oh, that's perfect. Jet lag waits for no man! How about the crowd—who else did you spot in the lobby? It's an upscale crowd, with plenty of business travelers in the mix—but there are also locals swinging by for pre-dinner cocktails. Got it. Now, back to the hotel itself: How was check in? From the outside, the Continental has a grand entrance, but inside, the reception is surprisingly low-key. We arrived around 5 p.m. on a Friday afternoon, and what first caught our attention was the lively, albeit laid-back atmosphere of the lobby and the BAR BROMAN, where a DJ was playing funky lounge music; we immediately wanted to join the crowd. The staff was efficient and perfectly welcoming, providing a fast and smooth check-in, which means more time to explore all the sites in the neighbourhood. Fun! Alright, onto the good stuff: Tell us about the digs. This early 20th-century hotel has undergone significant renovations in recent years; we checked into one such junior suite that was recently refurbished. The new look is classic contemporary, with a delicate colour palette. There are a lot of soft furnishings and textiles, and the decor is elegant, giving it a feel of understated luxury. The huge bathroom, though, was without a doubt the star in this specific suite, with a big shower and bathtub to soak in. The bed provided the best sleep we've had in a long time, with fluffy duvets and soft sheets. That sounds divine. How about the little things, like the mini bar, or the toiletries? Any tips or tricks you want to fill us in on?If possible, try to get a room facing the courtyard; when you go to open the windows for some fresh air, it's so quiet and peaceful that it'll be hard to believe you're in the middle of one of the busiest areas in town. The Wi-FI is free, and you won't need to register to use it, which is always nice. All rooms have TVs and Nespresso coffee machines, and the mini-bar will provide you with the standards (though, one happy surprise was the hotel's own brewed beer!). If you're feeling peckish, the room service menu gives you plenty of options to sate your cravings, and they have 24-hour service. Quality toiletries from Molton Brown and little touches like fresh daisies enhanced the experience. Perfect—thanks for the heads-up. How about the room service and food? Worth it?This place is more than just a hotel, and on its premises, it offers five bars and restaurants for guests, city residents, and visitors, alike. Enjoy a hearty and fresh breakfast buffet in the brestaurant Caroline. Eik Annen Etasje, is the high-end gourmet option, and Steamen is an informal sidewalk cafe. There's also Bar Boman, in the front of the hotel, a stylish lobby lounge and hotel bar with excellent cocktails and some tasty bites if you're hungry. It's a popular after-work spot for the locals. The jewel in the crown (at least, from a historical perspective) though, is Theatercaféen. It opened at the same time as the hotel, in 1900, and from the beginning, it's been a magnet and meeting place for the Norwegian cultural elite. The Art Nouveau-style interiors alone make it worth a visit, and there's an extensive wine list and menu to everyone's taste. We'll have to stop by. Alright, how about staff—anything you can tell us on that point? The staff is smiley and discrete, always amenable, fast, and on-point. Great. So, bottom line: worth it, and why?If you want a great base from which to explore Oslo's many attractions, and you're hoping for a 5-star experience, Hotel Continental will fit the bill. Not only is it a perfect place to recharge your batteries during your exploration of the city, but the staff is, first and foremost, concerned with your comfort." - Melissa Hegge

"Dating back to 1900, and sharing a deep connection to the National Theater (which sits just across the street), Hotel Continental is a venerable figure in Oslo ’s arts scene. The family-owned property has long prided itself on being a hangout for local artists, a tradition manifest in its impressive art collection, which is displayed both in public areas and private spaces. Guest rooms juxtapose modern and classical touches, like top-of-the-line flat-screen monitors viewed from classical European divans; 59 recently renovated rooms add gilded elements and marble finishes for an airier aethetic, while a new lobby bar serves up classic cocktails at a circular counter surrounded by blue leather stools. As befits a hotel with a longstanding relationship with the creative community, the Continental offers a number of all-inclusive packages that bundle accommodations, meals, and tickets to shows around town."

We stayed two nights at the end of a fjord cruise in late June. We arrived in time for the last day of Pride, which was great fun. The beautiful weather combined with the party atmosphere made it a memorable day to wander the city. The front desk staff recommended excellent restaurants and helped us narrow down how to best see Oslo in such a short stay. His recommendations were spot on. The central location made it easy to get the hop on/hop off bus and also walk to many attractions and good eating. Our room was well appointed, clean and very comfortable. The selection of foods at breakfast each morning was terrific and the pastry was amazing. We would happily stay here again in the future.

Walking distance to City Hall, the Parliament, National Theatre, and the best restaurants in Oslo, Hotel Continental is the perfect way to experience the capital city for the first time. There are groceries, convenience stores and restaurants around every corner along with souvenir shops and general shopping surrounding the hotel as well. ||The rooms were clean and spacious and the beds were some of the most comfortable I’ve experienced. The breakfast buffet was good and staff was generally friendly and responsive. ||There was an issue with a tour I booked for my family through the hotel so make sure you get written confirm of your request and itinerary. That hiccup aside, I enjoyed our stay at Hotel Continental and would recommend it for first time visitors to Oslo.

This hotel is a real jewel in the city. We were greeted by a very friendly staff who showed us the different places in the lobby and explained how to het around in the city. The room was amazing... we had a suite and I would be totally recommend to book one if you need space for your stuff. It has enough space to work in one room and put our luggage, and sleep in the other room. The bathroom is very spacious and really clean. All amenities are full size, which doesn't seem to be the norm in Europe. Breakfast was very well stocked and the food is delicious. Overall it's a great place to stay in Oslo.

Room and cleanliness was great. Quiet room and the bed was excelent. Very polite and helpful staff in the reception. Breakfast area was airy and the foot was very good. The staff here brought coffee or tea to the table with a smile. Food coild also be ordered from a meny, omelet of my own choice etc.

I rarely write reviews, but I feel compelled after my stay here. ||Let’s be clear: Oslo is a stunning city with warm, welcoming people. I came here for the first time with high hopes, but unfortunately, my trip was marred by the accommodation.||The room I was given was shockingly small, cramped to the point of discomfort. The bathroom was barely functional, offering no breathing room whatsoever. ||The photos attached speak for themselves — tight, outdated, and hardly befitting any property that claims to be five stars. It felt more like a budget hotel in a crowded transit hub than an iconic city-center landmark.||A truly disappointing chapter in an otherwise beautiful visit to Norway.

We had a lovely experience at The Continental Hotel Oslo. We booked a junior suite and were very pleased with the space and comfort. The suite featured a large bathroom with a deep soaking tub and a separate shower, plus a spacious living area and plenty of closet space. The bed was softer than I usually prefer, but surprisingly comfortable for my back.||||The staff were warm, professional, and welcoming throughout our stay. The location is outstanding — just a short walk to the Royal Palace, shopping areas, the waterfront, and great restaurants. Room 561 was perfect for us, and we would absolutely stay here again.

Google
The check-in was smooth (that’s the one thing I can commend). But the rest? Disappointing at best, and criminal at worst. The room, for which we paid nearly $700 for a single night, was cramped, dated, and underwhelming. A standard Hilton or Marriott would have been more comfortable. The bathroom doors don’t even lock, which is an odd and lazy oversight for a hotel at this price point. But here’s where it went from underwhelming to outrageous: while we were out to dinner between 6:45 PM and 8:30 PM, housekeeping entered the room. When we returned, we found €100 and $100 USD missing from a wallet left behind. This wasn’t misplacement. It was theft. I called the front desk immediately. The receptionist said he would escalate the issue, but no one followed up. So I called again later and reached the duty manager. I asked her to speak with the housekeeper assigned to our room and search her belongings, as I was certain the missing money would be found on her person. Incredibly, the duty manager claimed she didn’t even know which housekeeper had serviced our room, and that no one could look into it until the following day. The staff had been made aware of a theft, and still allowed the employee in question to finish their shift and leave, all without any questioning or inspection. Any opportunity to recover our stolen property was completely lost. That kind of delayed, dismissive response is not just negligent, it’s enabling. The fact that a guest can be robbed within hours of checking in should be unthinkable at any hotel, let alone one positioning itself as Oslo’s flagship luxury property. It shows a serious failure in security, staff supervision, and basic integrity. We’ll be filing a police report, and we’ll also be reporting this incident to Virtuoso directly. Based on our experience, we’ll be strongly recommending the hotel be removed from the Virtuoso program. But for anyone considering Hotel Continental: for your safety, your wallet, and your peace of mind, maybe consider staying somewhere else. Oslo has better options that don’t charge $700 to be robbed.

My stay was exceptional! The hotel's perfect location, right in the center, allowed for easy walking distance to many landmarks. Conveniently, trams and buses were just outside the door. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, with Sophia standing out for her exceptional service. The room was clean and neat, making for a comfortable stay. I highly recommend this hotel!

Yelp
We have so enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Continental, Oslo. Hands down the friendliest staff, particularly Nathaniel who has been so accommodating during our stay. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. We particularly enjoyed our spacious bathroom to which we will likely emulate in our New York home. Both restaurants were simply decadent. Breakfast which was included was excellent. Perfectly located. This hotel has made my our trip to Oslo very memorable. Will definitely make this a regular stop in our future travels.

Yelp
We've stayed at this hotel twice: first time in the winter and second time in the summer. By gah! Two completely different experiences! Since I hate being cold, I recommend - hands down - to stay in the summer. I can honestly say that it felt like I was in two entirely different places. The hustle and bustle of Norway in the summer is a joy to experience. We stayed in the Royal Suite and had the most perfect 180 degrees view of the heart of Oslo right outside our windows. The hotel is a beautiful and our suite was impeccably decorated. The lounge/restaurant downstairs is a must if you stay here. All the staff are very welcoming and friendly.

Yelp
The Continental is a small boutique hotel in Oslo, considered to be one, if not the, of the best hotels in Oslo. From the outside, it looks ordinary. But the room and services are top notch. Toiletries are Molton Brown, only the best. Beddings have very high thread count, almost silk like. And the usually bath robes, slippers etc. are top quality. I would have given the hotel 4.5 stars instead of 5, because the gym is somewhat austere...and no sauna! Nevertheless, the Continental is my home away from home in Oslo.

Yelp
Super great hotel. Right in heart of All the places to see and do. Couple of blocks from the Palace and Parliament. A few blocks from the bay and rows of restaurants. From the the airport take the train to Nationaltheater. The hotel is just across the street. Easy. Can't ask for anything closer. Hop on and off is right in front of hotel. Awesome. Lots of coffee and pastries. Got to try reindeer and shark. A must stay place. You love it.

Yelp
We had 18 hours in Oslo and wanted something centrally located. First a note about Oslo. Oslo is shockingly expensive. Oslo is the most expensive place I've ever been to. We booked the room with American's Express' Fine Hotels and Resorts which gives you a bunch of things like free breakfast (which I think everyone at this hotel gets anyway) and you get $100 to use for the minibar. Getting to the hotel. I read somethings saying Taxis are $90'ish USD from the airport. When I asked a taxi driver for the price estimate it was well over $200 USD. So don't take a taxi. If you have a cell phone with data (free with T-Mobile) the next part is a little easier. Google told us which train we needed to take. During the day their are express trains which cost more money and cheaper trains with more stops. We arrived late at night and the cheaper train had the same number of stops as the daytime express train. There were kiosks to buy the tickets. The express train and slower train used 2 different kiosks. If you're arriving late to the hotel like we were the dinner options are extremely limited (we got dinner at near by 7-11). I mentioned earlier that Oslo was shockingly expensive - there was an exception to the rule (kinda). The minibar had reasonable prices (some things were less than the 7-11). We has 18 hours and $100 to spend for minibar stuff and we had a party. We ate and drank most of the stuff in the minibar and only spent $99 and some change. We had to really work to spend our $100 credit and that was fun! :) The breakfast is included with the room, which is great because food outside of the hotel was expensive. The breakfast was the typical European hotel breakfast. The quality of the food was good and they coffee was excellent. The hotel staff was very helpful to help us with some efficient sightseeing (we had only 3ish hours to see the sights). The hotel staff was also friendly. The room itself was nice, but small. The bedding was comfortable. If I need to have another layover in Oslo I will come back to this hotel.

Yelp
The check in was hassle free. We were escorted to our room and everything was efficient and in order. The concierge was more than helpful in giving us advice on how to navigate downtown. Here's a hint: walk. Oslo, is such a walkable city, and this hotel was at the center of it all. Tip: check out the lobby cafe and spot some original works of art by Edvard Munch himself.

Yelp
So much to love... - breakfast! - location! - professionalism ...and so much not to - elevator services only some floors - painting in the hallways - tiny gym - about $200 to wash a load of laundry - not great communication about adjusting a booking.com reservation - loud noise outside on weekend nights (cue "get off my lawn!" sound clip) For a good half-marathon from and to the hotel, run through the palace park to majorstua, down through vigelandparken, around bygdoy, and to the city hall. Curious about the LHW designation. Is that pure pay to play? Or peer voting? Or customer voting?

Yelp
Lovely place to have coffee and watch the Grand Dammes of Oslo go about there business. Good place to meet someone for a casual business meeting. Lovely old style hotel, excellent service

Yelp
This hotel is very intimate and lived up to every expectation I had. the rooms were large and clean. The bathroom had both a shower and a separate tub, with dual vanities. The breakfast is HIGHLY recommended and amazing! Lots of variety. The hotel is located steps away from the subway station, which will take you wherever you need to go (e.g., the Ski Jump, etc.), however, Oslo is a very walkable city and we rarely need to hop on the train. The hotel also is home to one of the most popular restaurants in the city (Theatercafeen) so if you want to eat there, make sure you get a reservation early. A nice maid came at night to ask if we needed any towels, shampoo/soap, or turn down service. I like those details. Overall a very very good experience. Would not hesitate to come back.

Yelp
Have been staying here around 6 times in the past 4 years. Really good location near Karl Johans Gate and Aker Brygge, but beware that if you have a room along the streets, they get really noisy from the revellers till 3am on Saturday nights! Breakfast's pretty good, and the rooms are cosy but somewhat on the small side.

Yelp
We stayed at this hotel the for the first night of our Norwegian Trip. When we arrived the staff was very friendly. The building itself is an older building with great charm. It's central location provides easy access to nearby attractions. On the inside it is a decorated with quite a bit of art and in a classic and contemporary style. The rooms are very clean and nicely decorated. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are very nice. They also have a nice fitness center. The only meal we ate was breakfast. It was a wide variety of meats and cheese to eggs bacon. Along with bread, pastries, and yogurt. All in all this is a very nice hotel located in the heart of Oslo.
