Editor's Letter: Coming Full Circle

"On the veranda of the Hotel Continental Saigon, the site of Graham Greene’s first meeting with his protagonist in The Quiet American, it felt like frontline war correspondents might return at any moment to drain the half-drunk gin-and-tonics left sweating on the arm of a lounger."

InterContinental Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Ho Chi Minh City’s the envy of south Vietnam, artfully straddling the line between its rich, multifaceted history and contemporary cosmopolitanism. Triangulate from the Notre Dame cathedral, the Independence palace, and the opera house and you can’t miss InterContinental Saigon. Its public spaces skew grand, though not overly ornate — credit the team for knowing when it’s enough — nodding to French colonial history without drowning in it. Rooms preserve this balance with rich earth tones and warm wood accents where they count. Rest and recharge, but don’t skimp on streetlife; this place is best perused on foot (or moped), nosing out incredible street eats as you go." - Tablet Hotels

Hey

Google
The location of the hotel is so good. It's so close to the attractions that it's great for traveling. You will see the facilities are very old-fashioned. But on the other hand, they're very antique. The price is reasonable, and the taste and atmosphere of the breakfast are excellent. However, I don't recommend massages in the facilities. They are not very good at massaging, and they are blatantly asking for tips.

Review after review whines and whinges about stupid things like the corridor was long and a little dark. It’s a huge old grand hotel with sweeping corridors lit to give an atmosphere of grandeur. The people complaining must want LED lights omg. ||||One whined that the soap and shampoo dried her hair. What a misery it must be travelling with her. The soap and shampoo are fine. If you run out you can ask for more. ||||The high ceilings keep the rooms cool. But there is air con. Someone mentioned that there wasn’t any usb charging ports. He sounds like a||Novice traveller. Who doesn’t carry adapters and power banks when travelling. Embarrassing.||||This hotel is where the journalists used to meet and drink during the Vietnam war. It was built in 1880. It’s 5 star. It’s brilliant. ||||The people who whine in reviews probably live in the slums of Calcutta and get out once every 5 years. Those people judging a hotel harshly is just a joke. ||||The next one to whine should be forced to put up a photo of their house and bathroom first. I’m

The hotel is old and you must understand that before staying here. This building dates to the late 1800's. The service was very good and the staff was very attentive. Houskeeping was also very good and the room despite being so old was kepot very clean as was the bathroom. There is so much history here. Despite missing the conveniences of a modern day hotel like lots of outlets etc. The hotel has an undeniable charm. I upgraded to one of the suites on the lower level. They have very high ceilings, soaking tubs, and a lovely lanai where you can step out and see the noise and bustle of the city. The upgrade was worth the small fee, and if I ever stay here again, it would have to be in that same suite category. Otherwise, the regular rooms are on the darker side as they don't get as much light coming in. Breakfast has a lot of options and was ample, which I can appreciate. Overall, I give it a 4 out of 5 because of the history and vibe.

Every single day, we've said how happy we are that we chose this hotel. The location is absolutely perfect - right in the heart of everything. The rooms are spotlessly clean, the beds are comfortable, and hotel is extremely well maintained for a hotel that's been around since 1880! Oh, and the buffet breakfast is a must! Every staff member we've interacted with has been so warm, helpful, and attentive. We genuinely can’t fault a thing. We love this hotel and have already agreed that we’re only staying here next time we’re in HCM. Highly recommend!

Old classy interior and great location.High quality and lots of choice for breakfast buffet in open terrace. As you see, the Location is great, but may be not very comfortable cause of street noise. If you are opera-view. room have good sight from your balcony, but may be only few available (mine is opera wing room but not facing street)Bath room is able to flush the paper.Need to learn how to turn on the TV, cause new internet connected gadget.Room is very spacious, and sealing is high, the A/C is a bit small, so room need time to cooling down.If I have chance to visit, I would prefer to stay here again.

A very nice hotel with an interesting history, and a great location. Some parts of the hotel need to be updated but it’s quite nice overall. Our room had a sweet little balcony that overlooked the breakfast courtyard. Lots of great places to eat and drink nearby.

Such a historical and just beautiful experience as you take in the atmosphere from the French influence in the hotel's architecture as well as listening for voices of ghosts that spent months reporting the horrors of war in the past century. The hotel is lovingly preserved in it's former glory with the rich woods tone of floors and wall paneling , especially the opera view suite rooms. The breakfast was sumptuous enjoyed in a beautiful courtyard setting. Location is excellent to see all the sight of old Saigon and new Ho Chi Minh City. Close to sightseeing buses. And after a long day of touring, enjoy a cocktail or coffee outside the hotel restaurant where Graham Greene and Anthony Bourdain imbibed a few beverages in the past. The entire staff provided excellent service as well! Thanks for a memorable experience Hotel Continental!

Everything up to expectations. Continental Saigon hotel has a long history of more than one hundred years. It’s nice to step inside this hotel and feeling the mood of the past while enjoying all the modern comforts. We booked a suite with balcony and view on the Opera theater. The location is perfect for walking to all the major attractions in district 1 and nearby districts. Check in and out fast and efficient. Staff very helpful to suits our needs. Good breakfast served in a nice inside patio with trees and plants.
