Editor's Letter: Coming Full Circle

"On the veranda of the Hotel Continental Saigon, the site of Graham Greene’s first meeting with his protagonist in The Quiet American, it felt like frontline war correspondents might return at any moment to drain the half-drunk gin-and-tonics left sweating on the arm of a lounger."

InterContinental Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Ho Chi Minh City’s the envy of south Vietnam, artfully straddling the line between its rich, multifaceted history and contemporary cosmopolitanism. Triangulate from the Notre Dame cathedral, the Independence palace, and the opera house and you can’t miss InterContinental Saigon. Its public spaces skew grand, though not overly ornate — credit the team for knowing when it’s enough — nodding to French colonial history without drowning in it. Rooms preserve this balance with rich earth tones and warm wood accents where they count. Rest and recharge, but don’t skimp on streetlife; this place is best perused on foot (or moped), nosing out incredible street eats as you go." - Tablet Hotels

"A fabled Saigon hotel renowned in literary lore because Room 214 is where The Quiet American was written; it serves as a literary starting point for walks up Dong Khoi toward the city’s French-era landmarks." - SilverKris

After a tour around Vietnam we decided to spend our last 2 nights in Ho Chi Minh City at the Hotel Continental. We were very happy with the decision. We’d booked an Opera View suite and were offered an upgrade for an extra cost when we checked in, but after seeing the upgraded room decided to go to our original room. The view was amazing and it was great to lean out on the balcony and people watch. There was a little traffic noise but that didn’t bother us at all. If you’re used to dead silence it may be an issue though. The Heritage room wouldn’t have this issue. The breakfast was amazing, banh mi station was great! In fact, I sold my partner on staying here by showing her a YouTube video of the breakfast! Only one coffee machine caused a little bit of a traffic jam, but you were able to get hot and cold coffee at the bar as well. My partner had an iced coffee the first morning from there. I just used the coffee machine as I’ve become totally addicted to Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. The hotel is old and I’ve seen reviews where people complain about that fact, but I found it lush and luxurious in a way that modern hotels aren’t. Dark wood accents, heavy drapes and a high ceiling make me feel like I’ve stepped into an old Saigon (until looking out the window at the hustle and bustle). Location is top notch. I have no complaints and if I’m ever back I’ll be staying here.

Double Booking Trouble I booked this hotel through Agoda, but a duplicate booking occurred. There was no prior confirmation regarding the overlap, and I was not informed of it during check-in. As a result, I was charged for two rooms, even though I was only ever shown to and stayed in one room. While it was partly my fault for not checking carefully, the hotel refused to acknowledge their negligence in failing to inform me of the duplication. They showed no willingness to compromise, despite charging a guest for a room they never used. They simply dismissed the issue by saying, "Duplicate bookings are common." I had sent inquiries before checking in, but I received no reply or even a basic greeting. If they had any intention of communicating with guests in good faith, they had plenty of opportunities to notice the duplicate booking and alert me. They did nothing but hide behind their "policy," showing no desire to help a guest who made a simple mistake. I felt that this hotel not only lacks hospitality but is actually inhumane, as they only care about short-term profit—even if it means remaining silent while a guest suffers a loss. I recommend keeping this in mind if you are considering staying here.

This hotel is top notch service. They went above and beyond. Besides being a historical hotel, they just made you feel like like you were royalty. They had an amazing breakfast every day. And the location cannot be beat. Our room was outstanding. I would make sure to walk all the halls to see the rooms that had history attached. 7 hotels in Vietnam that we stayed, this was by far my favorite

I first booked the superior room, when I got in aircon was not working, there was a strange noise from the nearby building, I asked to change the room. It was late at night the receptionist told me that they already upgraded my room to the one with the inward balcony (the building has an indoor area), so he offered me a real superior room with no window… Or upgrade to a suite for extra money… so I had to pay extra $150 for my stay to get the Opera room. The receptionist gave me the last room at the end of the floor, so again the balcony overlooked the nearby building, and has some strange noise, aircon was working. Receptionist told me it was their best room, hahaha! The best room is Opera suite located in the beginning of the corridor, not the end, as it has a nice view on the Opera. Anyways, the room was still nice, good bathroom with a bathtub. Breakfast was so-so, no croissants, and small variety of fruits and western options, but lots of Asian options like soups. When I was staying there the hotel celebrated 145 year anniversary on the 27th of September. It was nice to stay for a few nights, to touch the history, but for one time. Next time I’m in Sai Gon I’ll go for another more comfortable option.

Continental gives a rich heritage feeling. Rooms are spacious enough and have a vintage atmosphere. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The location of the hotel is centre to many places such as the Opera House (just beside the hotel), Ben Tah Market(shopping), Saigon Center (shopping), many indian restaurants and the instagram Cafe Apartment. The only thing that I didn't like was the breakfast.

Our stay here, while pleasurable and in a good location, was subpar. We stayed here because of the history and it seems as though many do as well. The building is dated as are the facilities but that’s what gives it charm. Staff are accommodating and welcoming. Breakfast in the court yard is beautiful in the morning offering mostly your regular breakfast options. We did not try Le Bourgeois as we saw food both in person and online that looked not good. The second floor bar is a nice spot to have a quick drink. I think the Hotel Continental Saigon is past its prime. A relic to visit and see but maybe not to stay. It can be saved if it was slightly modernized or taken under new management. The best part is the location. I wish it the best and another 145 years.

Hey

Google
The location of the hotel is so good. It's so close to the attractions that it's great for traveling. You will see the facilities are very old-fashioned. But on the other hand, they're very antique. The price is reasonable, and the taste and atmosphere of the breakfast are excellent. However, I don't recommend massages in the facilities. They are not very good at massaging, and they are blatantly asking for tips.

i was really excited for my stay cos the building looks so nice and i like history. unfortunately the hotel is not up to date anymore. many things are worn out. the bathroom had only a bathtub and the rim was so high that my mother need assistance to get in and out. I liked the old wood but facilities were outdated. no plug next to the beds etc. they provided two tiny bottles of water (200ml) for two persons. when i went down to the lobby at 11 pm and asked if they have filtered water refill the receptionist say no and if i need more water I need to buy from the mini bar. he wont provide any. the breakfast buffet was hugh and good. but they started cleaning up at 9.20 am (breakfast is until 9.30); without mentioning before. when i asked the waiter what happened to the teapot? he first look at his watch, then realised it was too early and gave me hot water and a tea bag. all together that didn't feel like the service and standard of a 4* hotel
