On the Grid : Hotel da Estrela

"This is a small boutique hotel, member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, located in a palace that was, until a few decades ago, a school. That’s why the hotel is themed like a classic old style school. The hotel is adjacent to Lisbon’s Hotel School and the guests may come across students doing their training in the hotel." - Fluor

Hotel da Estrela

"Most visitors to Lisbon stay in the delightful but busy Bairro Alto, Lapa, or Alfama districts, but no one is disappointed when they choose one of the quieter, more intimate neighborhoods—like leafy Campo de Ourique. Here among the trees is a charming 19-room newcomer, run by Portugal’s Lagrimas hospitality group to provide hands-on training to students from the hotel school next door. The handsome nineteenth-century palace of the Count of Paraty was most recently a school, and this prior incarnation informs the decor by Miguel Câncio Martins (who designed Paris’s Buddha Bar and Lisbon’s Heritage Av Liberdade hotel). The reception desks are vintage stone counters from a chemistry lab. Rooms are hung with antique schoolroom charts and maps, and fitted with monochrome carpeting showing a motif of students’ drawings, mathematical equations, doodles and scribbles. Spacious and comfortable, rooms have small desks, big TVs, and beds with upholstered headboards that touch the ceiling. Some showerheads are handheld instead of wall-mounted, but bathrooms are spacious and well lit. A pleasant honesty bar and a good restaurant are welcome on nights when you want to take it easy after a long day of hoofing around this hilly city, and there’s also a quiet garden out back."

Overall this hotel is nice, you have to take into account that it is a boutique style hotel tho. The rooms are quite big and the beds really comfortable, the only problem was the light, in the bathroom, there was almost no lightning at all, which for people like me who has to have their make up done it was a bit difficult cause I could not manage to really see what I was doing, but besides that the room was good. Regarding the breakfast, it was nice. I would have like if it had had a wider food offer, but it was a nice buffet service. Besides, they refill once something is empty, so in general for a short stay this hotel is just fine.

Stayed here for 3 nights recently and mostly enjoyed our stay. The location was great and the building was beautiful. A short walk from a main transit area so it was easy to hop on a bus, tram or metro. The service was great. Reception was very helpful and gave us a ton of info about the city. The duvet had a very strong perfume scent to it which bothered me BUT they were very quick to come switch the cover to one that was not scented. Breakfast was simple, but satisfying including eggs, bacon, fruits, cheeses and meats, breads and pastries. There was also cereal and yogurt. Main complaint - the shower leaked horribly and was mouldy. It was obvious that the water was trapped where it shouldn’t be and the floor would flood when showering. I do feel that I have a bit of mould illness now from breathing in the spores. Definitely something that should be addressed ASAP. The light in the shower also did not provide much. If you are driving a small car be wary when leaving the parking garage, it’s a hell of a drop. Take it really slow.

Overall the hotel is nice but the furniture is a bit tired and worn. The breakfast is excellent with a good selection of hot and cold foods. Some things are just strange, we stayed in a suite but only two coffee pods and one bottle of water were provided for our three night stay, when I asked if we could get any more I was just told no, there wasn't even an offer to buy at extra cost. There is also a mini bar with no prices. I had booked a welcome drink and was told this was only tea, not even the offer of coffee any other beverage. Overall a nice hotel but for the price should be better

The hotel is in a great location. Reception definitely needs cleaning. Old sofa with stains, dirty carpet and impossibility strange receptionist, trying to charge me 12 Euro city tax for 1 night stay, which is 4 Euro. Just repeating herself over and over... The staircase needs cleaning as well as the hallway. My room had a shower cabin in one corner on a pedestal, and the toilet without windows in another corner right inside the room. The sinks also inside the room with the faucet disconnected and dripping. The mini fridge wasn't working. Considering the price of the room not really meeting that standard. A lot of confusion at the reception checking in as well as checking out.

I stayed here 5/3/24 thru 5/7/24. When looking for a hotel for my last few days in Lisbon, this hotel came up on my search. I am glad it did and I couldn’t be happier. This hotel is absolutely FANTASTIC!!! The entire hotel resembles a SoHo/Greenwich Village (NYC) building/loft. The room I got was huge. Very beautiful, clean, extremely sunny, floor to ceiling window that could be opened. Pretty much the room was more like a nice condo/Loft, than a hotel room. The hotel lobby, the decor, the vibe, the feel of it, the yard, the lounge area on the floor I was (which was floor -1) is awesome. I literally wanted to move in PERMANENTLY. The hotel is in a great location, and very nice area all around with GREAT places to eat. It’s only about 15 minute walk to the city center. I actually preferred this hotel and area more than any other. The area is not crowded with tourists and has a very nice neighborhood feel. The hotel front desk staff were AMAZING. Very friendly, very welcoming, and very professional. A total class act. They took the time to give me a brief history of the hotel, to tell me about the area, and all the best places to eat. The night front desk staff were also awesome. The cleaning staff were fantastic. I met the 2 ladies doing the cleaning on Sunday, and they were very professional and very sweet. I cannot say enough good things about this hotel and the staff. I absolutely had a fantastic stay. Quite possibly, this will now be my go to hotel whenever I visit the beautiful city of Lisbon. I 1000% recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone. You will not be disappointed. I look forwards to staying there again, the next time I visit.

Google
Really enjoyed or stay, rooms and bed excellent, good shower, staff fantastic from front desk to cleaning staff! but really appreciated the breakfast as it was quite extensive and tasty. on edge of tourist area but still quite walkable once you realize Lisbon has only 2 directions, up and down and cope. Delta coffee machine in room, though first 2 pods should be free daily Fully recommend!

My wife and I are American expats living in The Algarve since September 2. This was our first trip to Lisbon. We absolutely loved Hotel da Estrela and Lisbon! It’s location is perfect! Easy walks to public transportation, parks, museums, Cathedrals, excellent restaurants, etc, etc. The Hotel was a residence and then a school. The interior pays homage to its educational heritage with its decore. In addition, a Hospitality school is next door and the polite and eager-eyed students shadow the hotel staff. What a treat for retired teachers! The hotel is comfortable and welcoming. The staff are excellent. They also have private and gated, below ground parking right under the hotel. That was what sold me! The room was very clean, comfortable, quiet and large by Lisbon standards, we were told. We both slept well each night. It does show a bit of wear and tear but that’s expected in my book. It wasn’t off-putting, it just added to its charm. The included breakfast was delicious: eggs, bacon, fruit, breads, pastries, juices, coffee, meats and cheeses, etc. We will most definitely stay here again. It was actually hard to leave. That rarely happens for us! We usually are ready to leave a hotel for various reasons. Not this one. One negative, was that they use actual metal keys for the rooms instead of cards. Haven’t seen that in decades. Not nearly as convenient as cards. Also presents a safety issue because the door doesn’t have an auto lock feature. And you have to carry its big plastic key chain. But, it too added to the hotels charm and old-school feel. No pun intended.

Our stay here was excellent. The staff is very friendly and exceedingly helpful. They went out of their way to help us and make sure our stay was successful. Our room was great for my wife and I.

Yelp
We were booked into this hotel for our fourth visit to Lisbon. As with many Portuguese establishments- you win some and some you lose. This is a winner! It's off the beaten path. Staff couldn't be friendlier. Accommodations are huge. Rooms are quiet. Truly a boutique hotel with only 19 suites. Our room was quiet, spacious, and boasted an extremely beautiful bathroom. As this is a redesigned school (award winning designer) it kept faint reminders of school themes nestled into modern design. Even in the end- they wanted to know ways to improve the stay for future visitors. Pros: Quaint and quiet Bar off of lobby Coffeemakers and fridge in room Large bathrooms Open layout Friendly staff Cons: Limited breakfast hours for early travelers Plumbing in shower didn't function well Room lighting could be improved

Yelp
I absolutely adored this hotel and everything about it. I arrived to a perfectly outfitted room with updated furnishings. Everything fresh as a flower. Smartly decorated with the school vibe. So cool. The soaking tub was an extra perk, as well as the rain shower and comfy chairs. The bed was crisp and so comfortable. Staff: everyone was an ABSOLUTE delight from start to finish. Breakfast: gorgeous. Grounds: beautiful. Absolutely zero complaints, I loved it. You should stay here, what are you waiting for!? TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN? here you go... Kid-friendly: When I arrived the room had been outfitted with a travel cot, linens AND a small child-bathtub. Huge props on the bath tub...bathing a 6 month old in a regular tub is like trying to wrangle an octopus. Major bonus. Our room also had a small mini-bar fridge which had enough room to store bottles, baby food, etc. Pro-tip for parents: bring your baby slings! The area around this hotel is VERY hilly and thus very difficult to navigate with a pram. Your baby carrier will serve you well. Also, there is an elevator that will take you from ground level to reception...even though it is a just a few steps, it is useful to know that it can be accessed just a bit to the left. It will then take you to any floor you need for your stay as well. There is also a nice green area on the side of the hotel which is nice for a picnic or to let children run off some energy. It is not accessible without stairs so the best option is to take the lift all the way to -2 (where the cafe/restaurant is) and then go outside. There will still be just a few stairs but MANY less than if you try to go from the ground level of the hotel. It's built into the side of a hill. In this green area there is a nice pond and fountain, so do be careful if you've got mobile children unafraid of water!
