This is an awesome little family run hotel. THe Palace next door was built and belonged to the Davanzati family, and the courtyard below our rooms is named the Piazza dei Davanzati. It's a great little hotel, but not for weak knees.... You don't have to carry luggage, but you must walk up 26 stone steps to get to the Reception desk. However, once you get there, you will meet all the family, and they will welcome you as one of their own! We've never experienced the extraordinary warmth of welcome in any other hotel ever!
We met three generations of the family, including the founding grandfather (Marcello) of the hotel business. The sons take turns at the Reception desk which doubles as the Concierge, and we always prefer tips from the locals who know the town best. We were early, and our room wasn't ready, but we enjoyed complimentary cappuccino in the breakfast area until it was. After the train ride from Rome, that was an excellent treat. Check this out, they have three (3) iPads in the lobby for checking on news, trips, tours, etc., and unlimited free wifi. Our bags were awaiting us when we arrived to find an immaculate old style room. We found modern key card security, a safe, and (surprize) US style electric outlets in the bathroom. Yeah!
Tommasso greeted us in the morning, got us all settled in, and got us tickets for the Galleria del Accademia. He suggested a super pizza lunch half a block away (reviewed elsewhere), invited us to attend the complimentary Happy-hour, and recommended the best Steak Florentine in Italy for dinner (with reservations). We went straight to the red museum ticket window, and straight into the Entrance, jumping a line of hundreds of people. When we returned from the museum, sights, shopping, and a terrific day, Riccardo & Fabrizio greeted us in the evening. The warmth just doesn't stop after one shift!
If you can handle the steps, then this is the place to feel at home.
Well recommended, we will return every time in Florence.
