8 of the Most Unusual Hotels in the Netherlands

"According to a number of popular conspiracy theories, the Hotel de Bilderberg in the Netherlands was the birthplace of the most powerful group of men in the history of the planet.    As the story goes, in November of 1954, 50 delegates from 11 countries convened in secret at the Hotel de Bilderberg in Oosterbeek, Netherlands. This group included royalty, international business leaders, the head of the Central Intelligence Agency and more. What they talked about is unknown, but it is believed that this group would go on to continually meet, year after year, at various luxury locations. New members were added but they all had the same things in commons: power, influence, and wealth. After their initial meeting, they were simply known as “The Bilderberg Group.” The hotel itself is a lovely resort nestled in the midst of an idyllic village. Built in 1926, the lodging is abutted by a national park at its back allowing for stunning vistas and a peaceful atmosphere. Given the luxurious and secluded nature of the historic hotel, its no wonder that the world’s great and powerful may have met here. It has been said that conspiracy theorists are just people with all the facts, but whether or not the Hotel de Bilderberg was the womb for a global conspiracy, its atmosphere of luxury and power is indisputable." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Hotel as ever looks very nice on the outside, and the reception area and downstairs looks very clean and has a modern feel to it. Sadly this ends once you get to your room. I’ve stayed here a couple of times now and the hotel rooms have a lot of updating needed. The rooms have a feeling of 1980’s roadside motel, very dated interior, no fridge , no safe and not even one bottle of water in the room , in either room in fact as there were four of us staying in two rooms. The bathroom looks very tired , must be at least 30 years old , for a shower you have to stand in the bath and pull a curtain around the bath to shower , also the vent fan wasn’t working and clearly hasn’t been for a long time due to the black mould on the ceiling . There was also a pool of water in the coffee tray which had soaked the sugars , left over from a previous guest . We had stayed for 4 days out of the seven when I eventually asked why our rooms hadn’t been cleaned by housekeeping - I was told that there was a card in the room which you needed to scan - again , no paper instructions in the room, just a QR code on a piece of paper. After this the rooms were cleaned somewhat , but not really to a good standard . We also had a power cut in the two rooms for 4 hours , nowhere else , just our two rooms . No doubt the dodgy electrics had got damp from the extract fan in the bathroom not working properly . The hotel bar. Considering this hotel caters for business travellers also , the bar was open one night only , which was Saturday . The rest of the week it was closed , the amount of times I overheard guests asking at reception why was the bar closed , especially on Friday night. Not good enough for a hotel that markets itself as one of the best hotels in the area ! Breakfast. They have a “ Please wait here to be seated “ sign , nobody ever comes to you so you end up finding your own table. I did this one morning and midway through my breakfast I was asked to move tables as they were wanting to set up tables for lunch , not good enough at all, especially as I had paid over £500 for breakfast for the week for 4 people! Selection of breakfast is generally good though however the coffee machines constantly run out of milk and the guests start to build up waiting . Lastly, when checking out , the staff did not ask “How was your stay , was everything ok?” Nothing , just a goodbye . A lot of training needs to be done here with front of house on how to speak to guests on check in and on departure. Overall, I won’t be coming back to this hotel next year, too many issues this stay, my advice is if you are coming for a stay of a few days, get yourself a nice B&B or AirBnb in the area - it will be cheaper and you will have a nicer time . Lots of work to be done to improve this hotel , especially for the money they charge !

False advertising(bathroom not as advertsized) and terrible value for money – this hotel might be worth €60 per night at best(We paid 170€ for 1 night). We booked a double bed but got two single beds pushed together. The rooms look like something straight out of a World War II documentary. The shower is awkwardly placed inside a bathtub, which makes it very inconvenient, and of course, this wasn’t shown in any of the photos. The toilet paper holder is positioned so close to the toilet that you can’t even sit properly. Breakfast was another disappointment: 90% of the tables were marked as reserved, and we were placed in a cramped side room with horrible acoustics, so loud you could barely hear yourself speak. In the room, you can hear everything. The TV is tiny, at least 15 years old, and the remote control has no plastic cover, meaning it’s likely been touched by thousands of people without proper cleaning. On the bed, only one pillow was fresh – the other two were old brown pillows that can’t even be washed. Honestly, disgusting. I have no idea how this hotel can be rated so highly. Honestly, it feels like there’s some foul play going on with the reviews.

This is a pretentious hotel, trying to be something it isn't. Supposedly dog friendly but omit to say which rooms allow dogs on their website. We booked a superior room to celebrate the end of our holiday. While we would normally book direct with a hotel as we were driving through Germany with intermittent Internet it was quicker to book via Booking.com. When we arrived we were told we could only take a dog into basic room but still charged us well over the Booking.com price for that room. They admitted we were being charged over £40 more but as a 'gesture' would not charge us the €36 for our dog. Instead of a lovely room overlooking the garden and forest we were given a small dark room overlooking the roof of another building. The Reception staff were not interested in our complaints about the cost. ||Dinner was nice, albeit expensive for what we had. We were basically told not to order the fish as it was 'too big'. When we asked to take some of our starter with us we were astonished to be asked to sign a waver saying we would not sue the hotel if we took ill! In all our years of travelling, often in the US where 'doggy bags' are normal and suing even more normal we have never come across this! ||We had hope this hotel in a beautiful area of the Netherlands would be the perfect end to our holiday. We will not be back as there are many more, friendlier and welcoming hotels across the country we can go to.

We had stayed in hotel for football camp. Kindly, warm workers. Cleaning is good. Rooms are old. The way of working air climate was little bit strange. In general it was good hotel about location to close for walking.

I really appreciated the self-scan mini-shop. It allowed us to have a nice glass of wine after a party elsewhere had ended. But also the fast service for check-in and -out and the nice forest. Next time i have a conference in Papendal, I'll definitely book this hotel, it's worth the short car ride. Or the nice walk through the forest.

Another very pleasant stay at Hotel Bilderberg. Great food, great facilities, great location in the woods which were lovely to enjoy a long walk each evening. Will be returning.

The hotel is set in its own grounds. We occupied room 203 which had a balcony.|The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The bathroom was a little cramped.|The breakfast buffet was extensive and one of the best we have experienced. We had dinner on one evening, the menu was limited but the food was excellent.|All staff were friendly and helpful. Parking was easy.|Hotel De Bilderberg is within safe walking distance of the Airborne Museum Hartenstein. We also visited the Open Air Museum where we spent a whole day, it was excellent. We were only here for two nights but there is plenty to do in the area for a longer stay. Thoroughly recommend.

Yelp
When most people picture traveling to the Netherlands, the first thought to come to mind is probably Amsterdam with it's old world meets modern city look and feel. I never would have imagined traveling an hour outside of the city by train to a rather secluded hotel in the countryside, nor would it be my first choice but our primary purpose for this particular trip was a conference in Arnhem/Oosterbeek and this just so happened to be our second destination on our Benelux (minus the "lux") trip. Our room at the Bilderberg was spacious as far as European hotel rooms go and the bathroom was twice the size of the one in Amsterdam. The bathtub was a true soaking tub which was much appreciated on the two very rainy Autumn days which I stayed there. Very clean and well taken care of hotel. Every modern convenience and beautiful, peaceful hotel grounds. Trails, tennis courts, etc. The lounge was comfortable and served up great sandwiches. We hung out in the bar a couple of nights for cocktails with hubby's business associates. In this part of the world, cranberry and vodka doesn't translate very well but we had a good time and managed to meet a few friendly locals. The service was good. Almost everyone spoke English to some degree so communication wasn't an issue. Walls were a little thin but our hotel room was down a fairly private corridor. My only main issue with this hotel was it's "middle of nowhere" location. We didn't have a car and had to rely mostly on taxis to get to the other conference locations. No shops anywhere within walking distance which was a PIA (pain in the ass) considering I was not a conference attendee and had two days all to my self. Hmmm... in hindsight I guess there are worse things than staying at somewhat decent hotels with nothing to do but read and cat nap all day... At least I got over my jet lag pretty fast.

Yelp
This is considered a very nice hotel in The Netherlands. Personally, I thought it was fine, and would stay there again, but I was a little surprised after all the hype I had heard about it. It is on lovely grounds though. Stunning. Middle of a park, and you can walk in the park on nice paths etc. The rooms are on the smaller side, or the rooms I was in anyway, 2 different ones two different stays. I do think they have different "levels" of rooms, and I got the lesser level. I imagine because I booked through hotels.com or some other discount website. The breakfast, included in the room price, was nice, and the restaurant seating area is gorgeous. I overlooked the gardens and it was a great way to start the day, especially since my rooms both faced out over the back of the hotel, which was not very pretty, and at times loud with trucks coming in and out with deliveries etc. The bar area is also lovely, and there were many guests sitting there whenever I went by it. NO pressure to have another drink, or one at all, you can sit there and read the newspaper with ease and comfort. Th parking lot is a little off to the side of the Hotel, which is fine with no rain, but I imagine would be annoying if it was raining. The hotel does rent bikes out (I think it was a nominal fee, more to ensure getting the bike back I think), and that is always a nice touch. I'd stay here again if the price was right, and if I had a car. This would be a difficult place to stay without a car.

Yelp
Everyone here was extremely friendly & helpful The lobby/lobby bar area is large & comfy with plenty of tables you can work at as well as soft sofa & chair seating. Rolf was super nice & interesting to talk with. He always checked to make sure we were happy & our drinks were full. The ladies at the desk couldn't have been nicer. They were so patient with me and I really appreciated it. The breakfast buffet is delicious with eggs, bacon, sausage, mini pancakes, chocolate sprinkles, breads, spreads, veggies & thin-sliced meats & cheeses. Milk, juices, coffee, tea and the staff are very helpful & bring you tea or coffee right away. The Dutch don't seem to care for decaf & do not have it ready made, so you will wait a few minutes if you want decaf - but at least it's not instant. The bedrooms are large enough for two people. There are no teapots or coffeemakers in the rooms. There is also no air-conditioning, but they will provide air coolers (fans) for the room and you can crack your windows a bit & bring in the fresh air. We had ours going the entire time. It was only humid a couple of days after that the weather was cool, but it gets stuffy without having air moving. The grounds of the hotel are lovely - they are surrounded by a small park/greenspace & have several trails (as well as complimentary bikes) behind the hotel to enjoy. Plenty of parking on gravel/pavers. Even if you have to park all the way in the back - it's just closer to the side entrance through the restaurant than the front. There seem to be two restaurants that are in the hotel. A Mediterranean one and the Italian one is Trattoria Artusi (separate review for that). I saw the menu for the other restaurant, but it never seemed to be open or maybe it's more for conference groups. Every time I asked about it they just pointed me towards Artusi. All in all, this is a great hotel, not overly expensive, great staff, good amenities (pool, steam & sauna rooms, bikes, scooters for rent & they allow pets) and extremely well-located for getting around this area. It is in Oosterbeek, though, not Arnhem. Our GPS from the rental company took us to an Arnhem location. The cross-street is Bredelen and you cannot see the hotel from the road, only a black sign with small orange & light lettering that is visible at night, but not so much during the day.
