I did leave it to a chance for hotel choice in Amsterdam - all the booking sites offerings did not please me, so I decided to rely on hoteltonight app and play Russian roulette. Waiting for the luggage in airport, I scrolled nervously thru openings - and finally settled on De Hallen. I am happy I did. No, no - not just happy, ecstatic.
This hotel is one of a kind. Truthfully, it is a statement of modern design embracing historical space, with all comfort of guest in mind.
Built in renovated tram depot, open two-story-high space is mind-blowing. Every detail is in place, every aspect is anticipated. Main atrium filled with curious sculptures, art, comfy couches, pillows and tables to hang out and relax.
Cafe and restaurant up front offer great food choices, and bar is open late. There is also open air seating in front of the hotel, and it's wonderful to get a drink or cup of coffee in the morning.
I loved the open structure of the roof, the bright light of the skylights, and the art. There is even old rail still running through the restaurant, preserved with clear coating! Heavy doors still stand from old times, reminding of what once was.
Rooms are super-quiet thanks for the service corridor running on the window side - so you get double sound proofing from hustle and bustle of busy Amsterdam life. Rooms are modern, and super-clean, with all amenities, of course. Service desk call you once a day to check if you need anything, and arrange anything you need - be it discounted tickets to museums, reservations or taxi.
It is pretty close to the great restaurants, parks and museums, and short ride on the tram will get you easily to city center or train station.
Note: this area is still under construction, so do expect some of that while walking around the neighborhood.
