You're reading this because you want to stay _in_ the medieval city, you big castle nerd, you. And (hopefully) you've already looked at the room rates and are still interested.
So: yes, you should stay here. It's what all the photos have led you to believe, and you'll be glad you chose to splurge for a few nights.
Given that this was a bishop's palace and has been modeled, remodeled and renovated over the years (centuries), the rooms are not standard. Ours was very nice, with a huuuge, well-appointed bathroom. (The one downside: a mattress that, as far as I know, has been there since the bishop called it home.) The terrace view, looking over a small garden onto the wall and city towers, was fantastic.
I found the parking / hotel shuttle system to be easy, and much preferred to either schlepping on foot from the car park to the hotel or (worse) driving the tiny, pedestrian-filled streets. All the staff -- especially the driver and valets -- were unfailingly polite, welcoming and informative.
We didn't use too many of the hotel's amenities, although I will say the Bar Bibliothèque is a cozy spot for a drink after a day playing feudal townsfolk. At the other end of the day, the buffet breakfast is outstanding, IMHO, but also très cher, so probably only worth it if you're big on breakfast.
Note: We visited in April, before the touristic hordes descend upon Carcassonne like a crusading army. On the advice of everyone I met, I would strongly suggest you visit during the shoulder seasons if at all possible. Still: probably the best place to stay for Castle Nerds in any season.
