Hotel de L'Abbaye Le Tronchet - Handwritten Collection (Le Tronchet, Brittany) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Along the Emerald Coast of Brittany there’s no shortage of impressive hotels, but you’ll have to venture inland to find a gem like the Hôtel de l’Abbaye. As you might imagine, it’s an authentic abbey, this one dating back to the 12th century, transformed with great success into a 45-room hotel whose rooms are as contemporary as its stone walls are ancient. Many units have private terraces, and there’s plentiful common outdoor lounge space as well. There’s an outdoor pool as well as a wellness area with a gym, whirlpool, sauna, and steam room." - Tablet Hotels

A True Gem Among French Stays This hotel truly stood out as the highlight of our trip through France. The photo shared captures the serene inner courtyard as seen from our private terrace, offering a sense of the peaceful atmosphere that defines the entire experience. Our stay was exceptionally pleasant. The hotel was immaculate and exuded a refined coziness that made it feel both luxurious and inviting. The building itself, rich in history and beautifully maintained, added a unique character and charm that modern hotels often lack. The peaceful surroundings further enhanced the sense of relaxation. Our room was in excellent condition, quiet, well-appointed, and offering all the comfort one could wish for. The property also features a good-sized swimming pool and a compact yet elegant spa area, perfect for unwinding at the end of the day. One of the highlights was the in-house fine dining restaurant, where we enjoyed a dinner. The quality of the ingredients, many sourced locally, was clearly evident. Breakfast the next morning maintained the same high standards. The restaurant space was calm and tastefully designed, making each meal a relaxing and enjoyable moment. The friendly and professional service tied everything together, making this hotel an easy favorite among all the places we visited during our trip. Without question, we would return and recommend it without hesitation.

I had the pleasure to stay here for one night in July, and one definitely feels welcome from the first minute. The car entrance into the courtyard feels exclusive, and the checkin process and hotel tour makes one feel comfortable. The staff is very attentive and offer you help with luggage, offer a glass of water during checkin, and genuinely seem like nice people. The room was very clean with everything in working order, but the decor might not be the traditional style one might expect a bit from a countryside hotel, and more be something you would find in a standard Novotel in a city centre. We were lucky to have a Superior room in the old building, there are more recent wings with more rooms, but these do seem a little less attractive. There is access to the pool which was lovely to have during the summer heat, and the lovely gardens surrounding the hotel make for a nice stroll in the evening or just after breakfast (which was very good too). The nearby abbey is worth a visit too, and can be accessed directly from the garden by a path.

We had a great stay, the staff couldn't do enough for us, rooms were extremely comfortable and the restaurant, hotel and grounds were beautiful. We will definitely use the hotel again in the future!

It was a great experience to stay at this hotel. It is converted from an old monastery from the 15th century and it has a great ambiance. Restaurant is also good and hotel stuff are very kind and nice people.

The Abbaye is an attractive building is set in lovely grounds overlooking a lake. It has been nicely renovated and modernised and our room was simple but comfortable. It is very handy if you are using the ferry to or from St Malo. Dinner consists of three set menus with 3, 5 or 7 courses. We chose the 3 course menu with the wine pairing and it was excellent, both interesting and well presented. Following this breakfast was very disappointing. There was a very limited choice on the breakfast buffet. Some fresh items were rather tired.

The room was lovely with views of the river and we enjoyed the pool. The restaurant was another story. We ordered the 7 course menu. The food is beautifully presented. However some basic mistakes: The fish was raw. The mussels over cooked. The pork was very good. Dessert rich. The biggest thing was nowhere do they say you can not bring a baby to the restaurant. We took our 9 month old. He was quiet throughout, he is used to restaurants and we feed him slowly. So he sits in the high chair and plays and eat. He was sitting with his dad and they were laughing between courses. The waitress came over and asked us to go eat in our room with still 4 courses to go. We were completely shocked. Nobody complained about the baby. He was not noisy. I spoke to the manager and she said that is unacceptable what she told us. We changed waitresses and got our drinks( my sparkling water and my husbands wine pairing on the house) but the evening was spoilt and we felt unwelcome and after that every little giggle or sound I would look around and be sure he is isn’t bothering anybody. A damper on a lovely night. An immense disappointment and sadness ; this waitresses behaviour towards us. This left a bad taste for us and we would not recommend the restaurant or place due to this.

Hotel was selected by Trafalgar as part of a Northern France tour - very large room with ability to open window doors out onto the garden where there is a table and chairs. Comfortable sleep - toilet is separate from the bathroom. Staff are polite and courteous. Hotel has a lake and lovely gardens. There are no convenient stores close by as the hotel is located in the country and is a refurbished old Abbey. Both dinner and breakfast were good and delicious.

A Disappointing Fine Dining Experience at Le Jardin de l'Abbaye||We chose Le Jardin de l'Abbaye for my husband's birthday dinner, trusting its listing in the Michelin Guide. The setting in Le Tronchet is beautiful, and the restaurant's décor is inviting. We eagerly ordered the tasting menu, anticipating a memorable evening. Chef Marie-Léa Coulon’s food indeed showed promise, but unfortunately, the service was nothing short of disastrous.||Fine dining is not just about the food; it's about the entire experience, where both the kitchen and service teams play crucial roles. In this case, the service team utterly failed. It was shocking to see such a stark contrast between the quality of the cuisine and the abysmal service. Imagine enjoying dishes of a fine dining caliber, only to have them served with the quality of service you'd expect at a fast-food chain. The staff provided no details about the dishes, practically dropped the plates on the table with a forced smile, and then disappeared.||Having dined in some of the best restaurants across Brittany—Le Saint Placide, Le Bistro de Cancale, L’Ermitage, Fleur de Sel, and Otonali—we have never encountered such low-quality service. If Chef Marie-Léa Coulon intends to sabotage her brilliant culinary efforts, she couldn’t have found a better team to do it. This experience has shattered our trust in Michelin Guide recommendations.||Fine dining is an art that encompasses both food and service, and sadly, this restaurant failed miserably on the latter. I would not recommend Le Jardin de l'Abbaye to anyone.
