5 Best Day Trips from Paris | Condé Nast Traveler

"The owners refer to the Hotel de Londres (“Hotel London”) as a “hotel de charme,” and the minute you step inside you see why, with its toile de Jouy wallpaper, comfy armchairs, and wall-size painting depicting an English hunting scene. Three generations of the Famille Colombier have tended to this cozy three-star hotel, which is a historic registered landmark dating from 1850. Best of all: You can’t get much closer to the Chateau de Fontainebleau. From the light-filled breakfast room, you can watch the morning light glint on Napoleon’s gilded gate while sipping a café crème and munching on a croissant." - Mary Winston Nicklin, Lindsey Tramuta

Hôtel de Londres

"How did it strike you on arrival? The owners refer to the Hotel de Londres (“Hotel London”) as a “hotel de charme,” and the minute you step inside you see why, with its toile de Jouy wallpaper, comfy armchairs, and wall-size painting depicting an English hunting scene. Three generations of the Famille Colombier have tended to this cozy three-star hotel, which is a historic registered landmark dating from 1850. The setting? You can’t get much closer to the Chateau de Fontainebleau. From the light-filled breakfast room, you can watch the morning light glint on Napoleon’s gilded gate while sipping a café crème and munching on a croissant. What’s the crowd like?Tourists keen to explore the chateau. The good stuff: Tell us about the rooms. There are only 16 rooms, but they're spacious and decorated with framed engravings, antique mirrors, and parquet floors. Some have fireplaces. Rooms on the second floor (like No. 8) have great views directly onto the chateau. Traveling in the summer? Request an air-conditioned room, as not all of the rooms are equipped with AC. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that worth a mention? There's a mini bar, but this is a historic, family-owned hotel, so it's not brimming with covetable (contemporary) amenities. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Bathrooms have been renovated recently and they are all done up in a pretty grey marble. Anything to know about the food?Because of the small size of the hotel, there is no room service, but breakfast is served downstairs next to the lobby. Anyone on staff you want to call out?The reception staff are warm and welcoming. Anything else you loved? There is a lovely enclosed courtyard with tables and parasols to use in the warmer months. Bottom line: worth it, and why?The price is right and the location can't be beat for exploring the Chateau de Fontainebleau." - Mary Winston Nicklin

A well maintained, traditional hotel in the heart of Fontainebleau. Very comfortable bedrooms with newly refurbished bathrooms. Great amenities including a selection of drinks, water and tea/coffee.|Great breakfast with a small quality buffet, good coffee and amazing breads.

For some reason, looking at the photos online I thought that the hotel was in the countryside. I realize the photos online show Fountianbleu from the hotel but it just didn’t click for me. When I drove up and saw that the hotel is literally across the street from Chateau Fountainbleu I was sort of shocked. I had room number 5 on the second floor. It was perfect in so many ways. The bed was gorgeous as was the view looking out toward the Chateau. The mattress had very good support and the room was spotless. However, I do need to tell you there was not an elevator. Someone carried my oversized luggage upstairs for me while I went to dinner. They can park a few cars in their lot but you best ask beforehand for availability. I had breakfast with the room for 15 Euros and it met all my desires. I had a small plate of scrambled eggs, juice, a fabulous coffee with warm milk and a true French croissant! Voila! They have more choices for breakfast but that’s all I want. The gentlemen that helped me at reception and breakfast were so nice and really did make a concerted effort to make my short trip to see the masterpiece Chateau Fountainbleu special! Kudos to them!!

Hotel de Londres is right opposite the Chateau de Fontainebleau, so you can sit by your window or on the balcony and gaze out on the amazing building. It is in prime position for those wanting to beat the crowds and get into the chateau first thing. We had a very comfortable, large room, upgraded as the hotel was quiet. Excellent accommodation.|Breakfast was also lovely, lots of choice and impeccable service. The staff are charming.|We booked a parking space which was useful, right next to the hotel.|Being by the chateau makes it very easy to find.|There are various good restaurants nearby, one just opposite the hotel.|Highly recommended.

Terrible Experience !!! Please forget all the polished marketing appraisals for this Hotel. My wife recently had to stay there and had a very disappointing Experience. Here are her words... I stayed at Hotel de Londres while attending an INSEAD Executive Program, and the experience was deeply disappointing. The room was cold upon arrival, and despite attempts to fix it, the issue remained. Basic housekeeping was neglected— sheets weren’t changed, towels weren’t replaced, trash bins weren’t emptied, and amenities like coffee sachets weren’t replenished. When I raised these concerns, the staff responded rudely, with the manager dismissively stating, “This is not a business school like INSEAD, this is real life.” This attitude was both unprofessional and ironic, considering the hotel largely benefits from INSEAD guests. I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone expecting even basic hospitality or respect as a guest.

A lovely traditional hotel with charming patrons. We woke up every morning looking directly at the beautiful Chateau. The room was great but a quite challenging manoeuvre in and out of the toilet with an inward opening door.||Breakfast was a delight with personal service by the proprietor and had everything you could want, of the best quality.||It has been in the same family for three generations and they strive to maintain the traditional atmosphere. They were so helpful and were really nice people. Only issue was the poor wifi in our room.||Secure parking and convenient location for exploring the town. Would return without hesitation.||Recommended.

Visiting our family, in France, we stayed two days at the “Hôtel de Londres” in Fontainebleau. Our stay was just as in a dream and we enjoyed the high quality of the hotel, the amiability of the owners and of the devoted staff. Our room, number 8, was facing the castle and furnished with two, high standard comfortable King-size beds, a large bathroom with an Italian shower, entrance with separation door and all you could expect in such prestigious hotel. That without mentioning the outstanding noise immunity provided by the double glass windows and insulation making the room surprisingly quiet. We took our breakfast at the hotel, which offers a buffet and, if you like French pastry, we highly recommend the delicious croissants and “pains-au-chocolat” absolutely delicious. We also highly appreciated the amiability of the owners and their recommendations on sites to visit and restaurants. The overall hotel is charming, very well located and there is no doubt a place we highly recommend if you visit Fontainebleau. Thanks to all, at the “Hôtel de Londres” for contributing to make our vacation unforgettable.

Londres, just perfectly located in front of Chateau Fontainbleau and of coure with a view from our room. Greeted by a very discreet gentleman at the small desk he seemed to be as classy as the hotel itself. The building has a history that goes way back and the room we got was sparsely furnished with empty walls but a beautiful view. Just remember two things: 1) No elevator 2) ”Heavy” traffic 24/7. Not like downtown Paris but a constant flow of cars. Clean, nice hotel with a decent/good enough breakfast.

This was our first visit since before the pandemic and it was just as good, if not better than before. It's become our favourite place to stop when travelling in France. We had a very comfortable room, good shower etc and a small fridge and a safe. Lots of nice restaurants to try in Fontainebleau and we had time to do the palace which is just opposite the hotel. Secure parking is good and the breakfast excellent. We'll be back.

Yelp
A charming hotel in Fontainebleau just slightly away from the hustle and bustle of the center of Paris. (55 kl to be precise) built in 1850 it is a gorgeous example of the architecture of it's time. I love this hotel, it really has a lot of character not to mention a gorgeous view of the fontainebleau chateau/palace. The rooms are well appointed and the hotel is very homely. The owner is very welcoming and has a lovely little king charles spaniel that resides in the hotel. Nice breakfast also! The hungry kitten will stay nowhere else in fontainebleau!

Yelp
My daughter and I stayed here September, 2019. As soon as I saw the view from our exquisite room overlooking the Chateau, I realized I had stayed here 35 years before! Now as then, it was top notch from the gracious manager, restful decor and comfortable bed in the rooms to the petite dejuner. (The croissants were best I tasted in our entire two week stay in France). The hotel is within walking distance of downtown restaurants, but quiet at night. If you are wanting a get-a-way from Paris to see Chateau Fontainebleu or the equally intriguing Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte (about an hour away), book this delightful hotel!

Yelp
Was in town last month with several older women to see the Chateaux and got stuck late in the day with no way back to Paris...went into the lobby and got the BEST LUCK - Owner (Bruno?) was able to call a local Uber driver (Brigette?) for my group of 5! Very comfortable clean car - arrived fast and was super reasonably priced. Really a LIFESAVER! When I go back, I will try to stay there for the full experience! Merci Beaucoup!
