8 of the Most Unusual Hotels in the Netherlands

"Using four massive disused wine casks, the Hotel de Vrouwe van Stavoren in the Netherlands has created a unique hotel experience that is equal parts junk recycling and rustic chic. Each of the four wine barrel rooms at the hotel was made using wooden storage casks that have a volume of over 14,000 liters, more than enough room for the two cozy beds that are placed inside each one. All of the hobbit-like round rooms are also adjoined by a small living room and bathroom that is connected to the barrel from the opposite end of the front door. Despite the boutique nature of the lodgings, the prices tend to be fairly reasonable, ranging from $50 to $150 a night depending on the season. Most any hotel can provide guests with enough liquor to feel as though they slept inside a bottle of alcohol, but Hotel de Vrouwe van Stavoren may be the only establishment in the world that can make good on the promise." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

I was with my family and our dog in this restaurant. Everyday for breakfast and once for evening meal. The breakfast was a buffet with a lot of different choices like bread, cereals, drinks, fruits and vegetables, eggs feed and so much more. The price was for this offer really inexpensive. The waitresses were very friendly. At the evening meal they made a special meal not from the normal card because im vegan and thats without problems. The atmosphere was good and we had a very well evening there. we were totally satisfied.

The reason for two stars is the restaurant food. With a total lack of basic culinary knowledge and a complete lack of inspiration was the surprise menu a complete disappointment. My advice : eat somewhere else Tuna salad made with wet tuna out of a can. Too horrible unless you are really hungry and I was hungry. Tagliatelle pasta was okay but served with mashed potato and soft carrot slices... I really do think the owner should call Gordon Ramsay The surprise dessert was ice-cream with fruit out of a can. A complete lack of inspiration and an insult to everybody that would like to call himself chef. As answer to the problems I was told that the kitchen always did it like that. The accommodating wine tons are superb, but like I say don't waste your money eating here.

We had a very lovely stay at the hotel. The big wine barrel was great, it had a beautiful bathroom with a very nice shower, a pretty room with a comfortable couch to sit and a very cute sleeping room with a nice bed. The barrel part reminded me a bit of a Hobbit house. I really liked the fact that when you open the door of your room you are immediately outside. The food was nice and the staff was very friendly. It is a very charming hotel in a lovely town and just around the corner of the train station.

Stayed in the wine vats during my wife and my tour of the Netherlands. We loved it. The wine vat rooms were brilliant and we slept like a log! Bottle of wine was a nice touch and the food in the restaurant was super tasty. Best of all were the really friendly and helpful team there. Made our stay truly memorable and we would highly recommend. Steve & Kathy

Stavoren feels like a working harbour town and this harbour side hotel was busy with passing trade. We saw someone get an amazing looking box of mussels but we were just there for a drink and rehydration on a hot day. Still has the covid screens up inside which made it feel a little cramped. Every table outside was taken.

Our last stop in Friesland was at Stavoren, yet another seaside village which sits along the IJsselmeer. We decided to stop here for dinner and had originally planned to go to 't Havenhoofd and parked nearby but as we approached the restaurant, not only was it closed but there seemed to be a plague of what appeared to be mosquito like creatures big and small. We had originally seen these in Hindeloop but not in the volume that we saw in Stavoren. We walked up and down 'Havenweg' and the buildings and cars which just layered with these creatures and funnily enough none of the homes had insect screens (we do in Australia). Unsure what these creatures were and if it was a season thing or an 'all the time thing'. We ended up going to 'De Drouwe van Stavoren' (Hotel Restaurant Serre Terrassen) for dinner. It was a lovely evening but most of the diners appeared to be seated INSIDE the restaurant because of those pesky insects. We were seated immediately and although the seats were not the most comfortable but he wait staff were attentive and friendly. They discovered that some of us were speaking English and so they tried to accommodate us in that regard which we were very grateful for. The menu was varied and there were lots of choices but we'd discovered that they regularly provide a 3 course meal (the main being a choice between a meat or fish dish). We were a party of 5 and so we all decided to choose the 3 course meal which turned out to be an economical (but delicious choice) for all of us. We had salmon for entree and of course the main meal would be fish which turned out to be a delicious pan fried fillet of 'pangasius'. As we sat the window outside started to fill up slowly with those pesky insects. Two males on motorbikes turned up and sat outside but they were both smokers and only had a quick drink before riding off again. All and all a very lovely experience with the food and wine for our meal but not sure that we will return any time soon but purely because of the insects......Interestingly enough on our way home as we drove along the dike, we noticed 'clouds' of those insects swirling above the dike. We kept our windows closed until we left the area.

I was there for drinks in September with some Dutch friends whilst on a sailing holiday. We went for afternoon drinks. It had a lovely outside beer garden and in the beer garden was accommodation set up in old wine vats, very interesting and unusual. The service was good and the restrooms very nice.
