"This funky boutique hotel on the edge of the Britomart shopping district goes way back in Auckland history. Built in 1841 as The Commercial Hotel, the DeBrett building survived two fires and two rebuilds plus a stint as a hostel before becoming the quirky place guests experience today. The Housebar has always been the center of hotel life, and today, the intimate wood-and-mint venue exudes its original art deco style and serves classic cocktails and local beers and wines alongside refined pub snacks. In addition to restoring the bar and adding a glass-roofed atrium that houses the hotel restaurant, DeBretts Kitchen, the current owners affixed contemporary artwork and photography throughout and sheathed the entire building in candy-striped carpeting, custom designed from 100 percent New Zealand wool. Besides the carpet and small-batch minibar selections, no two rooms are the same. Each features unique furnishings from the 1930s on, and every bed has an original screenprinted throw. Two of Hotel DeBretts centerpieces, the chandelier and water sculpture in the restaurant, were crafted by Auckland artists from materials salvaged during the latest renovation. The result is a local experience from top to bottom that gives guests a real taste of New Zealand ."

Hotel DeBrett

"A mash of Art Deco architecture, sixties furnishings, and perky service, the 25-room Hotel DeBrett reflects the designer savvy and eclectic lifestyles of this edgy little district of downtown Auckland. Slick black-and-white bathrooms are a throwback to Mod Squad-era polka-dot dresses, and Austin Powers would feel right at home sliding down the two-story loft suites’ spiral staircases or spinning vintage vinyl in the cozy drawing room with its record player and DVD library. The hotel’s heart is an airy, art-filled two-story atrium that encloses the restaurant and courtyard of the adjacent bar, a place to kick back as Auckland’s notoriously fickle skies roll overhead like a time-lapse movie. The food is super-fresh Kiwi culinary fare, like braised lamb croquette, vine tomato, olive jus, and eggplant puree. The DeBrett doesn’t have a spa or gym but will gladly arrange in-room massages or personal trainer appointments, though most guests get their exercise exploring the city, including the boutiques along High Street and the bustling Viaduct Harbour with its waterfront pubs and America’s Cup yachts."

Really enjoyed our stay. The bath was deep which was perfect. Spacious rooms. Super Comfortable bed. Fantastic mini bar spread. The restaurant had fantastic food. And we were given two complimentary drinks upon arrival.

Highly recommend this hotel. Perfect location, lovely clean room, bathroom with both tub and shower. Breakfasts wee wonderful and the one dinner I had in the restaurant was excellent. Feels historic, but with all modern updates and conveniences. I would stay here again without hesitation.

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay in this delightful downtown boutique hotel. We recommend a corner street facing room where possible. Sound proofing is so good, there is no noise. The room is really comfortable and we like the cool contemporary design throughout the hotel. Staff are so welcoming and friendly. The corner bar is a fantastic place for a drink on the sidewalk. Breakfast is delicious. Could not fault anything and will certainly return one day. Thank you Hotel DeBrett for a perfect stay.

I am a regular at this hotel for both business and personal stays and there's a reason it's my favourite Auckland hotel... For a start the staff are always amazing and just can't do enough. Being a smaller hotel it has a personal friendly vibe. The food and beverages are always high quality and the best thing is the large, quiet rooms with divine beds and THE BEST HOUSEKEEPING IN AUCKLAND! Totally recommenced :)

Nice boutique hotel, slightly quirky, so bedrooms not huge, but bathroom was.|Nice touch of a free welcome drink from the bar on arrival.||We'd booked breakfast too, but the allowance was only one food item and one drink (either hot or cold). This felt a bit cheap not being offered a hot drink and juice.||The reception staff service was variable depending who was on shift, some helpful, some just only what was necessary.

Had a wonderful stay here! Loved the friendly vibe of this small boutique hotel. The staff were great and went the extra mile to make our honeymoon special. Room was very nice with a comfortable bed and lots of space to spread out. Loved the colors and unique decor. The restaurant was excellent, we had a couple breakfasts there as well as high tea. There were plenty of gluten free options, including whole tower of gluten free treats at tea! (for gluten sensitive, not celiac) I would eat at the restaurant even if not staying here. The hotel is located in a pretty loud area but the noise didn't bother us in the room. There was tons of stuff to eat and see within walking distance. The hotel has a membership card you can use at a local chain gym a few blocks away.

Wonderful place in a great location. The staff were remarkable,. This was our first stop after a 20 hour flight and they found a way to get us into our room early so we could rest a bit. They could not be better. Very comfortable rooms and easy to get to. Strongly recommend.

Yelp
A very unique place to visit while in NZ. I enjoyed my bar tour and I am glad our tour guide brought us here.

Yelp
We finished off our two-week visit to New Zealand with a 3-night stay at Hotel DeBrett. Overall: -our room, 2.3 (trying to be too hip with the decimal point thing) had two stories. You enter into a large sitting room with a pull-out couch, small table, two chairs, a side chair, a wardrobe and a small 3/4 bath. The most prominent feature is a 15 foot spiral staircase leading up to the main bathroom and bedroom which, I suppose are really one floor up. Definitely a most unconventional room. I liked and didn't like it at the same time. Pros: -modem updated bathroom with both rain shower and sturdy handheld shower head -super friendly front desk staff -separate A/C controls for up stairs vs downstairs Worked quietly and quite effectively -room was VERY quiet -bed was comfortable although I would have like a foam pillow-seems all the pillows we've had across the country are quite firm. -good housekeeping with nightly turn down -great location with respect to harbor and restaurants Cons: -unlike all our other hotels and lodges we visited, instead of a full, cooked hot breakfast, the included breakfast was merely a skimpy continental -boo -you have to drag your suitcase up (and later down) the somewhat narrow carpeted spiral stairs-not a place for older guests-use care -bath amenities rather pedestrian Bottom line this is a hip, stylish boutique property in a choice location with helpful staff. We enjoyed the place.

Yelp
Had to stay at this hotel since the hotel's name has my name in it. I was greeted by a super friendly employee that offered to upgrade my boutique suite to the largest room they had, the DeBretts Grand Suite for $30. I decided why not since the upgrade price wasnt going to break the bank. The suite was awesome. The room had a separate living room/seating area that had a full size table, a flat screen tucked into a corner, and a projector that projected cable tv onto one of the walls. The room had two separate climate controls for the living room and bedroom. The room had a mini foyer entrance and had the standard double sinks, tub, and rain shower in the bathroom seen in other upscale luxury hotels. We decided to try the room service and order the grilled tomato bruschetta and the grilled sandwich with some tea. The food was average, but we didnt come here for the food. One drawback is the parking. You either have to find street parking, self park your car, pay, then walk, or pay for valet. This hotel is close to shopping as well as restaurants. So whichever parking you decide, you wont need your car anyway. Overall, very enjoyable 1 night stay.

Yelp
Wooowwww! Yes, this hotel is pretty amazing! First up, the location is just perfect. Right in the middle of the CBD and easy access to cool restaurants, shops, parks, and entertainment. As soon as you walk in, you know that this is a classy and funky hotel. The colours and décor are bold. There is some pop styled art on display in the foyer and a whole range of Danish style and vintage furniture. This place just oozes charm. The rooms are well sized. I was on the second floor and had a balcony overlooking the dining area. Which was unusual, but kind of cool! I had a lovely view of the lighting and candles set up below. Love the choice of furniture in the rooms. They obviously had an amazing interior designer when setting this place up. Check out the cool cupboard which hosts your kettle, tea, coffee plunger, safe box and fridge. When you open the door to the bathroom you are greeted with an array of black "penny" tiles. The walls really pop and look so funky! If you want a hotel with a tub, well this one is huge and deep! You could easy fit two people in it. The shower was well sized and had a great rain style shower head with adjustable hose head. The bed had a feather pillow top, which may appeal to some; But it was a little soft for me. The pillows were ok. But I also prefer a medium hardness in my pillow. These were a little fluffy. But, total minor points. The stay in that room was very comfortable. We had breakfast included with the cost of the room. The breakfasts were lovely and staff were very attentive. Each day there was a range of fresh fruit, yoghurt, oats and bread. I think you can order a hot meal. But I couldn't get away from the yoghurt and oats. Final thing to note is that the staff are amazing! They learn your names, they go out of their way to say hello and ask how you are. As an added bonus, check out the drawing room from 6pm for one free drink. There is so much to love about this hotel. I would return in a heartbeat!

Yelp
So very rarely (this is the first time) does a hotel manage to offer fantastic service, in a fantastic venue, in a central location, and on top of that manages to scrape by without having the stay tarnished by some crazy external factors (outside noise, thin walls etc). The staff at the hotel are uber friendly. The rooms are large, clean and stylishly furnished (gorgeous mid-century furniture) and the place is just all round fab. Continental breakfast is included and it's more than you could ask for - fruit, two kinds of muesli, breads, pastries, fancy preserves and more. No gym onsite but you can get a free pass for one kind of nearby.

Yelp
Hotel DeBrett is perfectly placed in Auckland to explore restaurants, shopping and tourist attractions. It's also unique and small enough to feel special to those people who travel a lot and often get stuck in the "box in the sky" type hotel. I being one of those people. I really loved the extra touches at DeBrett, like high quality bathroom ammenities, free wifi, and an honur system in the guest lounge if you're after a glass of wine or simple mixed drink and want to enjoy it in a relaxing space. Speaking of the lounge, it's a great place to work or take small meetings if you're in town for business. Pop on a record and plug in your laptop when you want to work somewhere other than the desk in your room. The continential breakfast included in my room rate was more than sufficient to get me going for the day. Decent coffee, yoghurt, fruit and a wide selection of breads and pastries could be enjoyed in a bright restaurant space before attacking the day. My favourite thing about DeBrett was the beautiful decor. I'm a big fan of midcentury design so it was lovely to explore the hotel and see the different pieces throughout.

Yelp
I've been dying to get back in here since its fab award-winning renovation. In the 90s you could find me in one of De Brett's four bars on any given weekend and I always loved its style. After abandoning our failed mission at Everybody's we headed here for dessert. The frontdesk staff were lovely and welcoming so after a poke around the House Bar and upstairs lobby, we settled ourselves into a massive beautiful red velvet couch that we wanted to nick and bring home with us. The restaurant here is called Kitchen and the fireside lounge area is inviting and stylish - like everything else. Unfortunately our waitress was a bit low energy and brought us only the dessert menu but we asked for a drinks list and so it came. We ordered the Valrhona Chocolate Pave with Summer Berries and Croissant Ice Cream, along with a Cloudy Bay Late Harvest Riesling and Port. Everything was perfect and we can't wait to go back for a whole meal here and hopefully, an entire glamorous night away from home.

Yelp
Clean, well maintained and super well located. This was a perfect spot for us. We wanted to stay "in the mix" and not spend a fortune. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant on site was very good and their service was equally excellent. Hotel didn't have too much beyond your room and a solid restaurant. It was a wonderful experience...and I would stay here again.

Yelp
Lovely place! Very central. Very clean, Very stylish. Nothing negative to say really. And on top of that the perfect staff. Always with a smile on their face, great suggestions and a lot of attention to detail. On top of that they offered us a triple upgrade because they saw us being super tired after a 13-hour flight. Great stuff! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Search high and low for an affordable boutique hotel in Auckland's CBD? Yeah, so did I. Turns out it's rare as. (Can I use "rare as" like you use "sweet as"? Because I just smashed it, and it stays.) Enter Hotel DeBrett. While it's missing one must-have in my book (an onsite gym if you must know) it makes up for that in spades - or more relevantly - in free wifi, free breakfast, free drinks and all of those little luxurious personal reasons you're searching for a small boutique hotel instead of one of the larger chains. The funky, bright rooms have plush rugs, comfortable bedding, deep bathtubs, lovely products and thoughtful touches like in-bed reading lights, bamboo towel racks and very good in room tea. Not only are the attached bars and restaurant top notch, but the guest-only drawing room is like a little private sanctuary for guests where you can borrow a book or DVD, use their mac, plan your Kiwi adventure with their travel resources or sip a complimentary drink each night between 6:30-7:30. Most importantly, the location couldn't be in a more hip, central part of Auckland's CBD and staff is absolutely wonderful and accommodating. So while you'll pay a bit more for the base room rate, once you're here, you won't get pinched and poked for every move you make. After staying in a few other Auckland hotels and not getting near the value, this will definitely be my 1st choice going forward. And hey, there's a small 24-hour offsite gym free to all guests that's sweet as.

Yelp
A delightful boutique hotel in the heart of Auckland, the DeBrett has quirky mid-century modern wood and lacquered furniture, clean and comfortable rooms, and excellent service (and free wifis yay!). The restaurant has a solid wine and cocktail selection, around an excellent modern New Zealand menu (I had monkfish and Erin had the duck breast). Continental breakfast was included, featuring freshly-squeezed juices and a great apple and almond Bircher. The location was perfect for business meetings in the Auckland CBD and designer shopping if that's your thing (counterintuitively, High St seems to be the place for unique designer clothing).

Yelp
I am mixed on Hotel DeBrett. I booked online and pre-paid through Expedia, and when I arrived check-in was quick and easy. The friendly woman at the front desk took me up to my room, which was clean, comfortable and of good size. After she left, I did notice this room overlooked the interior, which is normally fine...but not in this case. I planned to basically drop my clothes, go out for dinner and drinks, and then crash since I just flew in from the US and was tired. But I noticed my room overlooked a wedding being set up. Surely, they have thought about this and made the room very quiet, right? We'll see. When I returned, the wedding was in full gear, and my room was right above the DJ booth. However, amazingly, it was pretty quiet through the window. Clearly, they had this all planned out which was appreciated. However...the hallway outside my room is also open to the banquet area for some reason, and the door is not as insulated as the window...so it was still fairly loud. Luckily, I was tired enough to pass out at 9pm, but I could see this being a big issue, and very disappointing. In the morning, I was constantly woken up by the elevator, which I was near. The mechanical aspects of the elevator seemed abnormally loud, and came through my door quiet easily. Needless to say, I got a poor nights sleep...despite how tired I was. Checkout is 10am...which is irrationally early. 11am or 12pm is fine, but 10am is a bit early. I was told I could do a late checkout for $75, but then that was taken back when they realized my room was already allocated for the next day. I did not try breakfast. I was able to store my bags for about 6 hours which was nice. The hotel certainly is lovely, comfortable, clean, the WiFi was fast and free, and the people were friendly. BUT, for a place to rest, I simply cannot recommend DeBrett, and I hate saying that.

Yelp
It was my friend's last day in New Zealand and she was craving brunch pretty hard. I looked over a couple of menus through Yelp and decided on Debrett's Kitchen since I had been there for coffee and needed some ambiance. Turned out to be a good choice because she LOVED the ambiance. I wasn't super hungry, so I elected to get the shakshuka (free-range eggs, poached in a spicy tomato sauce), partly because I just wanted to say the name. My friend ordered the smoked kahawai hash cakes, which had poached free range eggs, baby spinach and salsa verde. We ordered a side of pork & fennel sausage as well as "streaky" bacon, which I guess is something put there to make Americans feel at home. The dishes arrived, my shakshuka on a plank with a ceramic bowl of goodness still cooking. I couldn't contain myself, and although I know the dish is still hot, I had to taste it. Don't do that; it burns your taste buds for the remainder of meal. I munched on the pork fennel sausage and streaky bacon whilst my bowl cooled down. My friend really loved the flavor of the hash cakes. She didn't talk much over brunch. Cooled down, the shakshuka was delicious. The tomato sauce was smooth and fresh with a welcome spicy kick at the end. The eggs were exactly what I needed and wanted: filling without being overbearing. My friend saw that I still had some tomato sauce left over and she sopped it up with my bread (still avoiding the grains). Thumbs up.

Yelp
Retro, funky boutique hotel. Beautiful bedroom with a separate television room attached to a gorgeous, big bathroom. Great location; walking distance to some cool NZ designer stores, galleries and restaurants. The reading room is a great addition as is the honesty bar. Went out looking for some fun on a quiet night to find that all the cool kids were drinking at DeBretts 1950s style House bar.

Yelp
The Art Deco inspired House Bar upstairs in this hotel is on the list for late night cocktails, you are almost guaranteed to be the only ones. Had a great elderflower cocktail here, but tonight it was a Japanese whisky with chocolate notes (who knew).

Yelp
I love Hotel DeBrett - the whole development is stylishly executed and really unique, being one of the city's earliest hotels. If you're looking for an after work drinking station, pop in for one of their excellent cocktails or a drink off the extensive wine list. It's also a nice chilled bar over the weekend and perfect for a few drinks early in the night. The bar is next to the excellent restaurant DeBretts Kitchen if you're feeling hungry after working up an appetite.

Rebecca S.

Yelp
The bar here at DeBrett's (simply called "House Bar") is a real hidden treasure up on High Street. On the opening night of the Rugby World Cup, where we waited 20mins in line at another bar and didn't even get near a bartender, we waltzed up here and got a drink, a seat and a bartender desperately trying to tune in a TV to follow the action. He couldn't, in the end, but it didn't matter; we were happy in the bar drinking their well mixed drinks. It's cosy here, but that's part of the fun: you're almost forced to meet your fellow drinkers. The whole hotel was extensively renovated several years ago, and whilst sympathetic to its art deco origins, it hasn't slavishly adhered to this, and for the best: it feels contemporary and stylish but still with a sense of its own past.

Daniel K.

Yelp
One of the best boutique hotels I have every stayed in. Great staff, great food and amazing room. I would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Auckland.
