A Guide to Guadalajara, Jalisco's Beating Heart | Condé Nast Traveler

"Situated in Colonia Lafayette at the center of Guadalajara’s contemporary late-night landscape, this property is described as an elegant steel, concrete, and glass structure that houses a museum inside its mezzanine level. Rooms are noted for being stylish, with circular freestanding bathtubs, presenting the hotel as a sophisticated design-forward stay that integrates art and architecture." - Bill Esparza

"Located in the charming neighborhood of Colonia Lafayette, Hotel Demetria is among Guadalajara’s trendiest boutique hotels. In addition to stylish rooms, a rooftop pool, and a popular restaurant, the hotel features a contemporary art gallery and bookstore on its mezzanine level. Even more impressive, however, is the fact that the steel-and-glass structure is sandwiched between two pieces of architectural history—Casa Franco and Casa Quiñones, designed by Mexican modernist masters Luis Barragán and Pedro Castellanos, respectively."

We have stayed at Demetria twice, most recently for our wedding week (including our guests). We encountered so many issues that I can say unequivocally Demetria has the worst customer service of any hotel I've ever stayed at. As context, this was an international Mexican-American wedding where most of the guests are Mexican or Spanish speakers.||The hotel itself is impractical, pretentious, and too expensive for what you get.|- The rooms are way too dark. Everything is dimly lit to the point of dysfunction and being hazardous.|- The room designs are bizarre and vary wildly. E.g., showers, beds, and toilets right next to each other with no privacy, random dangerous steps you can't see because everything is colored black, giant TV stands protruding in the middle of the room at eye level, no closets or real storage – expect a single exposed clothing rack that could be in the middle of your bathroom.|- The doors are motel quality and have gaps at the top, so you can see into the hallways (and vice versa) and hear every sound your neighbors make. It was disruptive and felt unsecure.|- The rooms lack basic amenities. Many safes didn't work, there is minimal counter space/storage in the rooms, and forget about an iron, ironing board, or hair dryer. I've seen inside the Demetria storage closest myself, and there are maybe 6 total irons available for the entire building.|- The A/C units don't work. The touchpad controls are just decorative. Changing the temps does nothing. Every room was freezing|- The Wi-Fi is bad. Some rooms effectively have 1-bar of connection speed or none at all. Don't expect to work from your room.|- Pool and bar areas look cool but no one works there or attends them.||Hospitality and booking issues are where everything fell apart, ranging from disappointing to infuriating. BE WARNED IF BOOKING THROUGH A THIRD-PARTY SITE!|There was zero warmth, friendliness, or helpfulness from the moment we arrived.||We had a MASSIVE overbooking disaster that was handled poorly by management. Despite our guests booking Demetria Tower Suite rooms several months in advance, the hotel overbooked due to a city conference/expo going on that week. When our guests arrived, many were told their rooms were unavailable and were going to be forcibly moved to an entirely different "affiliated" property called: “Demetria Bungalows,” multiple blocks away. This is unacceptable for any hotel, let alone during someone's wedding week. Worse:|- Staff were dismissive, argumentative and showed zero empathy|- We spent over 4 hours on our welcome night arguing with them and on the phone with Expedia (Demetria would ignore Expedia's calls).|- My wife and her sister cried from the stress|- The Bungalows is clearly inferior (look it up, it's more like a dingy hostel or Airbnb) yet they still tried to charge Demetria prices|- Only after hours of chaos did they “allow” some guests to move into Demetria suites – if they paid more of course.|- This was mismanagement and, honestly, felt fraudulent. Fortunately, Expedia later acknowledged the situation as improper and compensated the affected guests.||Other examples:|- The manager chastised my wife – on the day of our wedding IN HER WEDDING DRESS for taking a couple of hallway photos before she left. Because “hotel policy does not allow photos inside.” Give me a break dude.|- Months before our arrival, my wife had pre-booked their conference room on the second floor which has good lighting for her and the other girls to do their makeup and hair. The day of the wedding, they moved her to a different poorly lit bad room, likely because they overbooked. It was very difficult for them to do their hair and made the getting ready pictures worse. Disappointing.|- Generally, the Front desk is unhelpful.||Positives:|- Great location in Colonia Americana|- Lobby restaurant is pretty good|- Valet staff were kind and helpful

One of the better evenings I've had here. The rooms are quiet, nice views and my girlfriend said it's one of her favorite hotels in the city. Only complaint was she thought the bed was a bit hard. Will come again.

Demetria was the worse decision for our daughter’s wedding. At many levels, we were completely blindsided by their lack of empathy, professionalism or hospitality. Even months before the wedding, months prior we stayed there to try it out. The manager refused to let them see the interior of a suite. We got past that thinking they might be fully booked, etc. Then they would not guarantee her a single bed suite for their wedding week. Claiming it’s “subject to availability upon arrival”. We left wondering if it’s that tough to secure a single bed suite vs. a double bed? It was too late to changes to our website. Upon arrival a week before the wedding, not a single acknowledgment, card, flower anything. I understand it’s not compulsory. But this a boutique hotel a small gesture of kindness would go a long way. Next guest start arriving, chaos breaks. I personally witnessed my best friend being told he is going to “their bungalow property” which is not close by or comparable as they claim. I tried talking to management, no one available. Clerk tells me she “can’t take people out to accommodate our guests”. Folks had booked months before! We were forced to move him to another hotel. My daughters cried at the counter out of anxiety. Expedia had to intervene and even then it was the worse experience. On wedding day, I arrive 6:30 am with the hairstylist. Dark entry, doors locked and no one at the counter. A guest coming down the elevator had to open the door for us. We were signaled up the service stairs, with all the equipment on tow. No help or assistance offered. A empty large dingy dark room. With no outlets, poor lighting. Our original conference room had also been booked apparently. Hairstylist was turned away a moment after we went up by telling him we had not ‘ reserved space’. We made the best effort to keep it together since, we had picked this hotel for our guest. I will not go into many other safety and security issues; including the dark floors that multiple guests almost fell into in main floor restrooms. That said carefully consider other options before you book Demetria. I say that in good faith as the mother of the bride, I felt helpless and mortified.

I am not one to complain, but after staying here for many years, I was extremely disappointed with the service. Besides waiting over 30 minutes for a margarita by the pool, I was met with an inept front desk that later charged me $20 for a chocolate in the room. After this experience, I will not be returning to this hotel.

Room and instalation ok. Personal is apátic, not kind in any way, i left a prescription medicine by mistake in my room and today no body knows nothing. So dont let your stuff out of the safe because it will get stolen.

For the price, I expected something better. From the outside, it looks like a nice hotel, and in theory, it is, but the room I got was chosen because it had a bathtub, yet the design was very impractical. Everything is carpeted, and the floor is black. There’s a “table” that’s more like a step on the floor, which isn’t very visible due to the lighting and the fact that everything is the same color. The room was dirty, as was the bathtub. The bed was uncomfortable, almost sunken, and nearly on the floor. They charge you for everything, and on top of the room rate, they make you pay extra as a "deposit." The bathroom was very small and also uncomfortable. The staff was friendly, but the room looked very poorly maintained, and everything was way too expensive for the quality.

Would not recommend. My family upgraded to the king suite and AC temp was like an ice box, we the device was broken. My wife and baby became because we could not control room temp. Was second time at hotel, not a good experience wouldn’t return.

Don’t count on the pool as an amenity - hotel was hosting a private event.

Yelp
The Demetria is a beautiful hotel with poor design. We stayed in a huge suite with a tiny space allocated to the sink and basin. The faucet sprayed water on us every time we turned it on after being unused for more than five minutes. We reported it a few times and it was never repaired. The most surprising problem with Demetria is the lack of basic amenities. The room was freezing and there were no extra blankets. We called downstairs twice and it took over 20 minutes to receive one. I don't particularly like staying up waiting for an item that should be stocked in the room. The list continues: no hair dryer (had to request and sign for), no shower gel, no bath robes, and no turndown service. The front desk didn't have a city map and one of the clerks couldn't even tell us where to go for coffee in the neighborhood. We were offered a map within five minutes of being seated for coffee at Casa Habita. Finally, an oversized bathtub but no special bath soaps or even house shoes. Each of these complaints may seem minor, but when combined, they reflect a poorly run hotel or a budget that is too tight to achieve the level of expectations for a first-class property.

Yelp
Pros: It is a quiet location. Our bungalow was the prefect size. Clean, great customer service and awesome decor (see photos). Overall the location is good, I felt safe at all times and it's walking distance from everything. Cons: This a small hotel and wouldn't stay here if you plan on partying. When looking for the location, there isn't anything indicating the name of it. You have to really look for the street address number. I'd at least expect a sign or something however, only the door which is open all day has 'Demetria' written on it. Also, when our tour bus was picking us up, there seemed to be so much confusion between Demetria Hotel and Demetria Bungalows. Make sure to reiterate the exact location and difference. When were getting dropped off after the tour, they took us to the other Demetria again, we had to explain it about 4 times that day. Finally, be aware that your vehicle will be parked at the Demetria hotel which is a block away. Not to worry, someone takes it for you, it's pretty much free valet. Didn't bother us at all.

Yelp
It's 4.5 stars, because Demetria was not without a few issues, but this hotel was largely fantastic and is probably the best hotel value in Guadalajara. (I used to live in Guadalajara before this place was built, and have had people visit from all over and stay in a variety of other hotels, including Lafayette, just up the street). You stay in a very comfortable and beautiful boutique hotel on an upscale, safe, slightly-tucked-away, neighborhood street just blocks off the nightlife on Chapultepec... all for less than $150 if you book online through a third-party travel site. That includes breakfast for two -- and legit, delicious breakfast, at that. There are the freshest and most flavorful made-to-order chilaquiles (rojo, verde, or hanbanero -- your choice) that you can have with whatever meat you want, or eggs, or both. They are spectacular. You will dream about them. The buffet is small, but good, and the coffee is also very good. There is a rooftop pool, with poolside bar and food service, a small but immaculate gym, dry sauna, rooftop lounging furniture. Prices for drinks and food are basically American standard, and certainly less than a crappy hotel bar at LAX. Some tips: * Book online through your favorite travel site. Rack rates through the hotel are typically twice as much. * You do NOT have to use their airport transport service (which is confusing because Expedia makes it sound like you do). You can get a heavily-regulated taxi through a very efficient and standardized system as the airport, for a fraction of the cost. * Service at the hotel is a little odd. They are exceedingly accommodating, but you have to ASK. For example, at breakfast, wait staff may not ask you if you want chilaquiles (which are worth mentioning yet again, and are written about on the sign at the buffet table), but if you ask them for them, they will hook you up as if they've just been waiting for you to ask. Also, there aren't a lot of towels in the room. Ask for more. They will happily bring more. * The water in your room is free. Yes, the beautiful glass bottles you need a bottle opener for. All of them are FREE. We went through 5-6 a day. they are replenished daily and are free. The little bottle of tequila liqueur is also free. It will not be replenished. * They will charge you for an early check in. Half the rate of a full night. It's a little irritating since, if they are offering you the option at all, that means the room is ready and otherwise sitting there waiting for you to arrive at 3pm. If you do check in early and still during breakfast hours, you get breakfast! That, and an extra shower (order up those towels immediately!) is totally worth it if you've just arrived on a red eye flight.

Yelp
I'm always on the search for a well-located, boutique hotel on my travels and Demetria did more than impress. This gorgeous and art-forward property is ideally located in one of the best and most convenient neighborhoods. You'll find lots of eating and drinking spots nearby along with easy access to the main points in the city. The room was decadent to say the least. The huge, charcoal colored tub was separate from the equally lush shower. And as you sit in the tub, you get a view of this massive vase artifact -- hotel blends art and artifacts seamlessly into its design. The bed was plush and after a busy day, sinking into it was heavenly. I also loved the hotel food, the restaurant is excellent, and the gym was basic, but everything worked. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
I love Hotel Demetria! The rooms are so beautiful and artsy. It really is a gorgeous hotel. The giant bath tubs are very romantic. The free breakfasts are delicious. There are many options to choose from. The baristas will make you fresh coffee on the spot! This location is great. We walked down to Avenida Chapultepec every day and night. We felt safe. We ventured into the old colonias with historic mansions. Staff at Demetria speak English and Spanish. They were so helpful and friendly. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to explore GDL. I'm planning a trip to el D.F. and wish Demetria was there too.

Yelp
Wow what a great design. I'm a general contractor (from Los Angles) I've built places, which have appeared in dwell magazine and some iconic locations (primarily in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica) and the demetria Hotel is not only unique but they keep changing it, so you'll have a new great experience each visit. The architectural details of this building are worth the stay alone. The interior decoration is incredible, unique and show lots of innovation and style. A lot of the staff speak English and make it very easy to communicate.

Yelp
Very nice and quiet hotel! Great location, only a few blocks from cool restaurants and bars @ Avenida Chapultepec. The staff was very friendly and recommended great tours around the city. Breakfast is included: eggs, fruit, coffee, variety of juices, toast etc. You also have the option of ordering A la Carte at your expense. Highly recommend the rooftop pool, which is only open to guests (so lucky you)!

Yelp
OVER PRICED! The toilet from the 1st room NEVER worked. The sink didn't either! Hilton Guadalajara would had switched us rooms. Our 1st night was a disaster due to the night manager not willing to give us another room! Like how are we going to poop? The next day they moved us to some bodyguards that had a MASTER key! He was able to open my room, he was given full access. That isn't cool! That's a privacy issue!!! They also don't have a spa on site. Also, their night security (the big guy) is nosy and rude!

Yelp
By far the coolest hotel I have ever been to! Excellent service, design, food, cleanliness, location, and more! In person the pool was even more breathtaking and the views from there were spectacular! Our room was a cozy, artistic, beautiful room with great quality equipment and design. The pictures do not even do it justice! I would HIGHLY recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Guadalajara.

Yelp
Beautiful esthetic and love the decor. The hotel restaurant had great food. However, for the appeal, there was lacking. The rooms don't have a heater. There is no security. Our neighbor across the way started having a hotel party at 5 am and we called security only for nothing to happen. People were attempting to open our room door on several occasions. Our experience went from great to poor towards the end of our stay. Maybe a fluke, but the fact that the hotel did nothing is concerning.

Ron V.

Yelp
The food is amazing. Breakfast was good, but dinner was to excellent the Pasta Cremosa was delicious and the Rib Eye was cooked to perfection and seasoned really well. On top of all that the prices are more than reasonable. Highly suggest it!!! 5 stars for sure

Yelp
I honestly don't even know where to begin to communicate how absolutely wonderful this hotel is. After staying here for the last 3 nights, I don't think that I would ever stay anywhere else in Guadalajara. It's tremendously unique, and laid back and casual - not stuffy at all! The staff is spectacular - Alejandra and Karen at the front desk were just so kind and helpful. Lucero and Marcos went out of their way to treat us especially well when having breakfast and coffee. And beyond the amazing employees was the uniqueness of the architecture and design of this hotel. It's stunning!! The glass, the art, the pool...and the BEDS..OMG, the beds were amazing!! Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money to upgrade your stay in GDL. Thanks everyone at Demetria for helping to make my stay a memorable one.

Yelp
This an exquisite boutique hotel. It is spacious, beautiful and very relaxing... Awesome architecture and design. The service was great. We stayed in the suite 800- which when we called was offered to us for a lower price. The room had an great view... Spacious and the bed was comfortable. The only drawback is that it is cold... Given the air that comes in through the window crevices. I highly recommend- all staff is nice and willing to assist but not over-imposing. Breakfast was delicious- order the fried quesadilla! In a great location.

Yelp
Absolutely great experience! First time in Guadalajara and I was very impressed with the service here! They are very accommodating, anything we asked for they would do their best to do. I almost felt bad because we kept asking for things (ice, juice, water, Aux cord, tours, etc). We even asked to switch rooms because ours was very dark and we wanted more light and they switched our room to one with a balcony! The entire building is beautiful and filled with art. The breakfast was delicious! I strongly recommend this hotel. We had a great time here!

Yelp
Based on the reviews I thought that this place would be spectacular. It was far from it. I always check the mattress for bed bugs at any hotel- there were no bed bugs but the entire mattress was dirty. There was literally specks of dirt in every divot and fold of the mattress. But there were several layers of bedding between the mattress and where I would be sleeping so I decided to stay. And in fact the bed itself was comfortable, but just having in the back of my mind the dirty mattress did ruin it a bit. The TV in my room didn't work half the time, and my electronic key card to enter the room didn't work almost every time I arrived at my room so I would have to go back down to the reception almost every time I wanted to enter my room. The turn down service is creepy, because I didn't know that they do it, so when I arrived back at my room at 10pm the sheets on bed bed were folded down, the TV remote control (for the TV that didn't work) was sitting in the middle of the bed, and there was a melted bucket of ice on the night stand- as if someone had been hanging-out in my room! Also, instead of having a hair dryer in the room you have to go to the front desk to ask- inconvenient. Finally, the room was not well-lit to begin with, but the light bulb in the lamp on the night stand was also burnt out and I asked the front desk to change it for me and they never did. The okays were that there is a tiny but dated gym area, and the pool area seems nice too. The goods were the included breakfast- delicious & gourmet. One more note, the hotel made me give them my credit card upon check-in, even though I had already paid in full through orbitz, and weeks after my check-out there was still a pending $200 charge on my credit card activity from them...in the end they did end up charging my card for $7 for what reason I have no idea...

Sal V.

Yelp
The hotel is excellent, but the administration is extremely bad. I was overcharged on a recent stay by an amount of over $400 on some fictitious charges that I supposedly made. When I checked out at six in the morning there was only a clerk checking me out, she informed me that the manager didn't come in until nine in the morning. After getting back home I talked to the manager Mr. Murillo and after checking the record he told me that I was right and would be getting a credit of roughly $450. He told me they would reverse it and credit my account. When I received my credit card bill three weeks later I found out not only had they not credit the account but in addition they had charged me an additional $400. It seems to me that this is a dishonest practice, I have the documentation that shows the debits on my account. This leaves me with a very bitter taste in my mouth. I made this reservation through booking.com and it was already prepaid, the additional charges were incidentals that were charged to my credit card.
