Admittedly, my wife and I hoped to stay at the Westin for our 28th wedding anniversary, but it was completely booked due to a music festival at the Rose Bowl. So I booked a room at Hotel Dena because it was close to Old Town Pasadena. We arrived at 2:00 pm to check in and recognized we were a couple of hours early. The front desk receptionist said, "Great news! Your room is ready." But since the official check in time was 4:00, if we wanted our room, it would cost $50. I was a surprised she did not simply offer the room to us given that we were only two hours early. As a regular guest, I was disappointed. As a Bonvoy member, I was flabbergasted. So we walked down the street for an early dinner. The hotel's location adjacent to the Pasadena Convention Center was perfect for the eating and shopping weekend we wanted. Upon returning, we checked in to our room and opened the curtains. Our southerly view was of a neighboring apartment building and alleyway. To make it worse, the tinted window film on our window was peeling off, making a clear view out the window impossible. Additionally, the lighting in the bathroom was pretty minimal, making it difficult to put on make up and perform other routine tasks in the mirror.
The hotel was clean and the art-forward atmosphere was exactly what was advertised. Lacking was a high end experience indicative of a four-star hotel. While both the Westin Pasadena and Hotel Dena are rated four stars, the Hotel Dena felt like a three-star hotel particularly because there was no valet or attractive main entry and lobby. Also, the level of customer service was nothing exceptional.
For a business person staying at the hotel for a convention, the Hotel Dena is perfect. For a couple wishing to experience a romantic getaway, this hotel failed. We paid $884 for a one-night stay, but what we received a $150 experience.
