"Open since 2001, the hotel pays homage to Houston ’s rich roots in the oil industry with black granite lobby floors and a vast collection of Texas wildcatter images by famed photographer Arthur Meyerson. A wildcatter is a nickname for a person who does exploratory drilling, and the hotel’s name is a variation on an oil “derrick” drilling rig. Streamlined and modern, the property underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation after Destination Hotels acquired it in 2012. Guest rooms have a neutral palette with bold accent colors, graphic textiles, and contemporary furnishings including platform beds and banquette seating. Expansive windows with city views are standard. The business center is open 24 hours, and the pet-friendly property has a “Wag Lounge” for guest dogs."

We arrived late in the evening. No valet and one person working inside. Front desk agent was nice and got us to our room but that’s when things went south quick. The room was disgusting. One of the worst bathrooms I’ve ever seen. Stains everywhere. Wall paper coming off the walls. No towels. Damage to the room all over. They are clearly not taking care of this hotel as other reviewers have stated. The parking lot was empty. The hotel felt empty and yet they gave us a trashed room. Can’t imagine what the other rooms are like. We looked up articles online and it said it was supposed to change ownership in June 2024 but that appears to not have happened. Don’t stay here unless you really have to. Many other options for similar price in the galleria area.

You would think that a hotel right on Westheimer and 610 in the heart of the Galleria area would be fantastic, but this hotel is out dated and uncomfortable. The bed was hard as a rock with flat, uncomfortable pillows. The bathroom was small with NO SOAP in sight. The mini fridge was basically at room temperature, so that we didn't feel comfortable eating food left in it. The room had a 70s vibe... Right down to the strange orange and yellow lantern hanging from the ceiling. Overall, for $200/ night and "4 Stars," this should have been a much nicer stay. The only positive thing I can say is that the 2 staff members we met (Valet & Check In) were both very nice. We will NOT be back and we recommend you don't visit either.

*DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY *The website shows they still have a functioning pool, and restaurant and looks amazing. But unfortunately upon arrival the lobby was dark; lights off, pool and restaurant were permanently closed. Made our way to the room and it looked like it’s never been cleaned, dust everywhere, bathtub was discussing, stains were found on bed and walls. Bathroom door was falling off. Pretty sure we were the only people in the entire hotel. The hotel is preparing to shut down, they are scamming people right now with false information online about what they have to offer. That being said we immediately packed our stuff and checked out disappointed. The only thing good about the place was the extremely nice valet.

Google
Incredibly underwhelming. For the price we paid, we could have spend 3 nights at a cheaper hotel and still had a better stay. Upon check we were told there was no gym, pool, or bar/restaurant- yet the website says everything is open? Then the room was outdated and mediocre at best. Not cleaned to the standard I would expect. No soap in the bathroom, a single hand towel and bath towel only. The room amenities were supposed to be coffee and 2 bottles of water, we had no water and no cups for coffee. The bed was the most uncomfortable bed we’ve ever slept on. The pillows were like lying on a sheet of wood. And only a sheet on the bed, no comforter. And the AC was so loud that it woke us up every time it came on. I turned the AC up so it wouldn’t come on as often and it still came on every 5 minutes.

Google
This place appears to be monetizing clients without providing proper services. In short, it appears to be a scam. Service = OK. Nice people but can’t help sometimes because it’s closing. Elevators = broken. Had to use stairs. Poop and cigarettes in them. Amenities = none. Room = OK. Old, but nice enough. Did not include cups for coffee = only amenity. Conclusion = they need to completely redo this hotel or stop misrepresenting the services and amenities.

TV didn't work, it was HOT, we were not advised during booking that they were doing renovations. It was uncomfortable 😫. The staff were outside, not at the front desk, and we had to go outside to look for them. The only good thing was we were in the Galleria area near alot of restaurants so finding food was not an issue. We also paid the staff $20 for him to watch our vehicles overnight.

Going out of business. No irons in room, no kitchen or refreshments on site. Can't use parking garage have to valet, no one was at front desk for 10min. No bags for ice buckets, no face towels. Room had a good view

Google
Should have checked the recent reviews before checking in. The hotel is in the process of closing for remodeling and nothing is open the halls are musty smelling and the room is in need of a good cleaning. Of course none of this is mentioned on the website it wasn't until chdck-in (past the cancelleation policy) before being made aware of the closed amenities. The valet/bellhop was extremely helpful though. Edited to add that there was no hot water in the room. No cups. Woke up this morning to jackhammer going off on a floor above us. It is shameful that they are still taking reservations to this hotel while they are actively working towards a remodel/demolish at the end of the month.

Yelp
Good Luck Hotel Derek. You will be missed. Thank you for your past care & hospitality and for wanting to come back stronger than ever, it is time! We first stayed with you 10 years ago. In this time we have had the pleasure of meeting Alma. An exceptional constant familiar employee of yours. Her worth and loyalty to Hotel Derek is beyond praise! Her sweet welcoming hugs and disposition speaks volumes in this generation where it's hard to find reliable hard working employees. Where she goes we will follow! I hope second time around you will be able to keep her & take great care of her, may it reflects your best. Best wishes. Molly and Manuel Salcido

Yelp
The hotel is beautiful & in a great location, but the walls are so "thin" that loud/excited talking from a neighboring room woke me up as I write this at 2:47 AM. It's as if the other people are in MY hotel room. It's been like this for my 2 night stay and they're not even being loud loud, it's just that there's nothing to insulate against sound. I hear the cars, emergency vehicles, loud freeway noise as if it's right next to me IN my room. That's what woke me up the first night. Bring earplugs if you stay in a room like mine. Staff I interacted with weren't very hospitable for working in the hospitality industry, but I figure, maybe it's just b/c it's like we're in one big open room, or maybe they also have earplugs in and just didn't or couldn't hear my comments/questions. I don't know. This place would wear on me after a few days, too. Some other positives: Bed was comfortable, toiletries scented with neroli are very nice. Shower worked. Major negative: you hear EVERYTHING.

Yelp
I had a conference close by and I'm allergic to waking up early and to traffic so I made the clutch decision to stay at Hotel Derek the night before. I have been familiar with the hotel for quite some time but this was my first time checking it out. It's a bit of a hit and a miss. On the one hand, the decor is nice and trendy. It's in a great location within walking distance of the River Oaks Shopping District. On the other hand, it's a hotel where upkeep doesn't seem to be a big priority. It's not that it's run-down or dirty or anything like that. But the hotel isn't as maintained as it should be and it's noticeable. You have to pay for self parking in an adjacent garage and I'm always annoyed when parking isn't free at a hotel. When I checked in, I asked the person at the front desk for information on the happy hour at the hotel's bar and she didn't know. And lastly, my room was super close to 610 so the constant noise of traffic didn't make for the most quiet of environments. All in all, it was an enjoyable stay which could have been a bit better.

Yelp
Wish I could leave 1/2 star or no star!!! This is not a good place to stay! Room we stayed in I very below standard! Not worth the money we spent. Everything in the room is outdated. See pics below. We only even stayed one horrible night. And we went to the parking garage people were smoking pot....dont get me wrong I am ok with it but why not in the privacy of your own home anyways....when we went to leave the pic below will show you what we arrived to!!!!! SERIOUSLY PEOPLE SHOW SOME CONSIDERATION!!!!

Tiffany-Machelle P.

Yelp
Ugh, didn't want to leave the 1 star. DO NOT STAY HERE, IT IS NOT UPSCALE. First of all, I chose to self park. You have to walk on the streets and pass a public bus stop to get into the hotel if you self park without a hotel key. I booked the PENTHOUSE suite for a valentine's staycation. Check in is at 4pm, which is late enough. Tell me why the room wasn't ready?! The front desk told me 30 mins.... An hour later and they couldn't find housekeeping and I'm still in the lobby with luggage. Naturally, I asked for late checkout bc the room wasn't ready on time. The front desk told me I'd have to ask in the morning, it's not guaranteed. For the price I'm paying, y'all need to do something. I only wanted to get into a room and change for my dinner reservations. I asked about this package that included late checkout, cupcakes and champagne for $65 that was in my confirmation email. I was told I had to book that in advance. An hour and fifteen minutes later, I asked to cancel my reservation. I saw all walks of life checking in during this time. Sketchy looking folks piling in with pajamas and no hair combed. Nobody looking like we're at an upscale boutique hotel. I'm clutching my luggage at this point. Front desk workers are by no means helpful. By no means man. Sitting up there trying to call housekeeping for 20 minutes... girl get up and go find somebody!! Do you know the nightly rate of the penthouse suite?! Let me speak to Derek himself bc this ain't it. I got up out of there and ran for my life. No organization, no customer service, no security. You can save a ton of money by switching to another hotel lol I chose a Hilton property instead for the weekend with no issues. Hotel Derek wasn't trendy, nor upscale. Never again for me. My reservation number was 57076SE249668 and i better not see Derek's name on my statement.

Yelp
Yelp, I'm officially asking you to allow us to leave ZERO stars. Now for my review...online this hotel looks amazing! Even in person it's ascetically pleasing. But one you settle in you'll soon notice it's all a facade. From phones that don't work, to broken blinds, to a leaking shower, to blown fuses that take out the power in the bathroom and rough towels with the hair of previous guests, just disappointing. Every time I left the hotel and came back I noticed the lobby smelled like gas which was a little concerning. My room smelled like velveeta shells and cheese on the second day. I was really hoping to refer this hotel to future clients traveling to Houston area but I would never. So let's see, since I have to give one star, what I can say for that....great location.

Jade G.

Yelp
Well, Houston is home and I'm in town for business. Let me say this used to be one of the class is most well respected hotels in Houston. I booked my reservations here, hoping to be close to the galleria, and upon my initial check-in I was definitely disappointed this hotel is not what it used to be! Let's get into it! So let's get started we all know that early check-in is never guaranteed at any specific hotel , however, on this particular day, I had been up for more than 24 hours I had just landed in arrive to the hotel around 11:30am. I had requested an early check in and was met with people lounging all over the furniture in the lobby, because everyone was waiting for a room. There was no specific details, but it was clear that it was going to be after 3 PM before we could even begin to move on the waitlist and I was number 34! I will say the front desk attendant was very kind and receptive. I was frustrated. I was extremely exhausted and she managed to get me pushed up a little bit early. With that being said, when I checked into the room, I was disappointed to see the poor condition that the room was in as you can see in the photos Wallpaper was torn. The desk was clearly dirty. There was still hair on the bathroom sink, and I also could not get the air conditioning turned off as it was set on 60 in the heat would not come on. I was desperate to lay down and get some sleep maintenance. Did arrive about 30 minutes later and got things fixed but it's just a very frustrating check in. It's disappointing when you come to a hotel of this caliber and they don't even have a comforter on the bed just a blanket in the closet . The pillows were hard and uncomfortable. The room filled have cleaned and it just wasn't a very pleasing aesthetic. Breakfast is included went down for breakfast the next morning, and it is served in a Buffay style . Everything on the Buffay was cold the potatoes were cold. The bacon was greasy and cold. The eggs were over scrambled in the toast sitting in the warmer was anything but warm. again, I have thrown many events at this hotel, and the wear and tear and lack of details is very apparent . Well, their prices are still very reasonable. I could not in good faith recommend this hotel to anyone and management should take a really hard look at the aesthetics of the room and the quality of the amenities being offered. If I could have canceled my reservation and moved to another hotel, I would have definitely chosen another location especially being here for business. This is not a comfortable stay.

Yelp
I was so disappointed by the lobby staff! They were not accommodating whatsoever. When my bank account was overdrawn, I discovered that they'd charged my card double that which I was told they would hold for incidentals. When I spoke with the supervisor the following day, she said she couldn't reverse the charge. I could have charged food and drink to the room, but they had no food or drink to offer. No coffee or water in the lobby either. Having no other cards with me except the one attached to the account they overdrew, I had no way of eating. A friend ubered me a bottle of wine and some food. Unfortunately, the lobby staff couldn't get me any utensils or a bottle opener either. They made no attempt to help. Their responses were that I could check out of the hotel or I could walk over to CVS and buy a bottle opener. She knew she'd overdrawn my account, and that wouldn't be possible. She snickered as I walked to the elevator. When I checked out, I made sure that the account was zero and requested the funds they were holding be put back into my account. She said they would be released when checkout was completed. That was Sunday. Today is Tuesday, the funds have not been returned, and my bank says the hotel has not yet released them. This hotel's lobby staff receive zero stars. The 1 star goes to the sweet and helpful maid on the 12th floor.

Yelp
RIP hotel Derek. As a Houstonian, it's sad to see this once great posh hotel be turned into a motel. Front desk said they are closing in 6 months and turning into Marriott, which explains the rundown look and less than professional staff. They clearly are just letting things go until the closure. :( In a pinch, this will do...but don't expect the usual hotel Derek.

Olivia H.

Yelp
Hotel Derek used to be the hotel to book for the weekend. I do not know what has happened. This is my VERY FIRST time staying here, and I am NOT impressed. I had to brush my teeth in the bathtub because the water comes out piping hot from both the cold and hot water sides at the sink. Hotel Derek needs an internal makeover....seriously!! The couch in my room looks as if it's been there since the early two thousands. I feel as if it costs too much to stay here for what is presented in my room. I am in NO WAY trying to persuade others from staying there, I am simply providing my experience (1st time) guest. May be my last!!

Kimberly C.

Yelp
As a hotel snob, I expect the best when a hotel boasts they're the best. This one fell a bit short. The rooms are fun, but could use some updating. The doors are scraped up and need to be stripped and repainted. The shower needs to be re caulked. The bathroom has rust in the ceiling, the furniture is dated. Art work isn't hanging up, instead it's sitting in the hallways. We had neighbors last night who were obnoxiously loud beginning around 4 am-the woman was either having the absolute best sex of her life or she was simply acting like it. We heard bodies slapping, banging on the wall, and a woman screaming and moaning over the course of two hours.

Yelp
First off I think I have over 100+ stays over at this hotel since 2018 but have not been in the last 4 years since Covid. Upon arrival to check in, I was met with the most rude employee. I told him the front desk employees that I did not pay for the room and he was still trying to charge me for the room . After I showed him multiple times he finally just asked for a credit card for incidentals with a severe attitude. I had to confront him about this because it struck me off guard and asked him why he was giving me an attitude for no apparent reason. All I said was I did not pay for the room lol During this period he belched three times and sucked his teeth. Definitely not hospitality in anyway. Figuring that this hotel has such low standards at the front as the face of their business, I decided to do a check of the room where it is absolutely disgusting. Sadly it matched the level of care at the front desk. There are Bodily secretions that are showing up with my UV light all around the bed frame, ( see pics below) stains on the sheets, as well as residue on all the surfaces. The only place that looks decent is the bathroom, Nothing came up with the UV light. I'm saddened by this because This was one of my favorite hotels in Houston. They have lost all hospitality at the front and cleanliness is at a zero. I highly recommend you go with a bigger chain that has more standards and more accountability for their employees.

Tony R.

Yelp
I made a last minute decision to book my stay in Houston at Hotel Derek and I'm very glad I did! The rooms are nice and clean and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. Even the valet crew was top notch. My car was parked right up front. I'll definitely return! Thanks again, T.R.

Kristalyn J.

Yelp
Such a disappointment. The room was dated (to be expected), but why keep taking reservations boasting about the amenities when there was no gym access, no restaurant, room fridge not working, complete darkness in the parking garage.... all around bad stay.

Lynn M.

Yelp
shouldn't be able to host people there anymore . everything was dirty old and raggedy. I spent 800 plus the deposit of 500 to smell gas have a ghetto room and a nasty room never again .

Isaac L.

Yelp
Absolutely garbage experience. They obviously put all their money into making the lobby snazzy, and had none left for the rooms. Issues: 1. Room smelled mildewy 2. Mattress was thin and lumpy 3. Sheets were scratchy and smelled of harsh detergent 4. Every light in the room buzzed loudly when it was turned on 5. Shower head was coated in limescale 6. Toilet would not flush 7. Iron was visibly damaged and had mold growing out of the steam vents 8. Ironing board was covered in flaky rust and would not close once opened 9. No electrical plugs accessible from the bed 10. Floor felt greasy underfoot 11. Smell of rot in public spaces like elevator and hallways 12. Parking was a hysterically expensive $30/night with tax I cannot discourage people strongly enough from staying here. In addition to the abysmal state of the room, the staff was short-tempered and rude, both during check in and check out, and implied that the damage to the room was our fault. Needless to say, after recounting this to my credit card company, they were more than happy to reverse the charges from this criminally misleading organization.

Shana E.

Yelp
The only thing that made my stay great was the sweet waitress Alma was super attentive my entire stay. She is definitely one of the reasons if I come back to Houston I'll be staying Hotel Derek again.

Sharnette M.

Yelp
After traveling the WORLD, I have never been charged a $300 incidentals fee for a three-night stay. And the charges are lifted after 5-7 business days depending on your bank. There isn't a stocked refrigerator in the room or anything that could warrant charging this fee in such a subpar boutique hotel. The manager says he understands people's disappointment but it is what it is. Absolutely a scam!!! Do yourself a favor and go somewhere, anywhere else!!!!

Caryn N.

Yelp
There is a lot of complaints I could share but for good energy reasons, I think there is enough feedback out there to note that I don't need to share. Let's just say if your gonna to charge the prices and surcharges make it truly worth my money! I digress

Mike B.

Yelp
Everything closes at 10pm, but they won't tell you that until you check in. Good luck getting any help for anything after that...

Lynn M.

Yelp
The chef here is horrible he gave us old cheese and cold chili on my nachos. He also got upset with the bartender because I return the nachos. The cook also wanted to know if we was black or Mexican before he made our food. I will never eat here again but the drinks are always on point, Antoine the bartender is very friendly and outgoing with everyone at the bar

Adrienne K.

Yelp
Yea, I think two stars is accurate. Room was ok, but over priced. Paid 40 bucks a night for "secure" parking. Four cars broken into, including ours, one car was stolen. They didn't even notify us. So waited for hours for the police, and they refused to give us a late check out. Really terrible experience with zero customer service. But they don't care about bad reviews, clearly. I included an obvious electrical code violation photo. Refrigerator did not work. Staff condescending. Avoid this place if at all possible.

Shameka C.

Yelp
we didn't get the proper amount of towels for two adults. when called they still didn't bring the towels. Money was taken out of my deposit and I've been calling all day, 5 times to be exact. Places on hold for 10 minutes amd still on hold for an email. This is outrageous and I will NEVER visit this hotel again.

Tomas R.

Yelp
Meh. This was about as equivalent to being hyped up from a Tinder profile to only go on your first date and realized you'd been catfished. I made the mistake of only focusing on their website and third party booking app, and I got bamboozled. My first room was a nightmare. It reeked of weed and the bathroom door was completely busted and it was a sliding door. There was water damage on the furniture and it looked horrible. It was seriously so off putting, I went downstairs and asked for assistance. They offered to send someone to clear the scent and that didn't even help. I was pretty annoyed they didn't offer to move me to a different room, but I figured let me get some pool time and perhaps the situation will get better... (it didn't lol). Oh! Forgot to mention their elevators weren't working the whole weekend so guests had to use the service elevator. Imagine one elevator for 15 floors for guests and staff. Absolute s*itshow. The pool is a genuine desert mirage. Don't expect much because there really isn't much. I'm still intrigued about the architect's choice to enclose it because there's no way for sun to really hit the pool. The hotel doesn't have pool service until 5pm and there's no bar inside the hotel aside from the mini bar to grab alcohol. There's also a total of three day beds and four chairs for this entire hotel at the pool. I have no clue about that but not even the term minimalism can save them. My biggest issue is the bartender who was overseeing the pool service. Paying almost $50 (including a $10 tip) for two drinks to have the bartender bring me the wrong drink and didn't even try to rectify it was horrible. The pool phone is available to order food and drinks at 5pm so I called to order an espresso martini and a deep eddy ruby red, club soda. The bartender took my order and about fifteen minutes later they arrived. The espresso martini was fine but I realized the "vodka soda" was not the signature pink hue deep eddy grapefruit gives. I mentioned this to the bartender and he just shrugged. I took it as they're probably shortstaffed so I accepted it'd be at least a tito's vodka soda or something of the sort. I did pay $40 for two cocktails afterall... Welp I was sure slapped across the face because it was a gin & tonic. WTF. So my friend calls the phone line and tells them we ordered a ruby red club soda. The bartender tells us they don't even have it. So why did you let me order it to begin with? We asked if they had fresh grapefruit juice and could make that with vodka instead. Here's the kicker... he charged me for the grapefruit juice when it was his mistake! I was so annoyed and flustered that I didn't catch this until it was too late. The second drink wasn't even fresh grapefruit juice and good vodka. What really pissed me off was how his attitude all around. The second round we ordered two dos xx's because no one can mess that up right? You'd be shocked lol. Paying prices similar to Vegas was such a red flag but I was trying to enjoy my time with my friend so I was ignoring it. After the pool incident, I decided I wasn't going to settle for the disastrous first room so I was at least pleased they moved me to a higher floor where the room was much better. Overall, just stay away from here. Don't let the photos fool you. You'd think this hotel would be top notch since it's walking distance to the Galleria, but avoid at all costs. Only reason why I didn't move to a different hotel was because of time bandwidth and the location of the wedding venue. Also had a kicker of a send off, when it was one person doing valet on a Sunday because the other valet person had to deal with a cop trying to repossess a car from a hotel guest lol. Ended up just asking for my own car key and walked to get my own car. The good: -valet parking with in/out privileges -friendly staff at front desk

Consuelo I.

Yelp
I needed a local getaway for major self-care. I chose the Hotel Derek because of its proximity to 610 and the galleria area. It is conveniently located on Westheimer road. Self and valet parking available. Good customer service. Comfortable rooms, beds and pillows. Excellent stay so far.

Cynthia W.

Yelp
I can literally taste the smell of this hotel. Why does it smell like a desperate cowboy's cologne at a bar on ladies' night. It's so overwhelming it made me nauseous. I've I weren't exhausted, I'd go to another hotel. Two nights parking 87.65. Thanks but no thanks.

Alysha M.

Yelp
Why do I always forget to check Yelp before I book a hotel? Lol rookie mistake!! This place isn't bad. But for the price and all the hype that I read about it online?! I was expecting so much more :/ it's pretty old/dirty looking unfortunately - our bathroom in particular was lookin rough...yikes. I'll do a little more research next time we're in Houston :)

Chad J.

Yelp
Horrible hotel. Service was SLOW in the bar. we had a group of 12 staying at the hotel for a work event and it took 20+ minutes to get everyone a cocktail. Got accosted for money by a child and her father while sitting in the bar. The room was ok. Mattress was hard. Valet was expensive and self parking was "closed".

Michael M.

Yelp
This hotel claims to be a 4 star hotel. It's not even close. I travel to Houston regularly and have stayed in the Galleria area for over a decade. This was the first time I tried this hotel due to what appeared to be advantageous price. Well, the old saying you get what you pay for applies here. The employees here don't understand customer service. To start, this hotel has maintained the Covid policies of no housekeeping services unless requested. No mention of this during check in but I saw a document on the counter that referenced this and indicated they will provide housekeeping services every other day of your stay. I requested housekeeping at that moment after reading the document. As you might expect, no services so I called the front desk the morning of the second day and wanted to confirm my services. I was told quite rudely there was no way to get a housekeeper to my room that day (all day). They could provide towels so I agreed. Later that day, I returned to my room and not surprisingly, no towels. I called again and the gal at the front desk assured me that towels would be brought up as soon as possible. Returned from dinner, and you guessed it, no towels. I tried on three different occasions after dinner to call the front desk and no one is answering any calls. Instead of walking down to the lobby to request towels for the fourth time as a result of no house keeping services, I decided to write this review. Other small issues that on their own are no big deal but cumulatively signal poor management and lack of customer centric culture include bathrooms in the lobby are locked and not functional, restaurant closed for lunch, no where to get a drink (during the day) or bottle of water in this hotel, facilities on the first floor abandoned, rooms dirty/have not been maintained, rips in the couch in the room, elevators don't work in the parking garage... I could go on.... Long story short, stay clear from this hotel. Lots better options in the Galleria. It was empty all week so I guess I didn't get the message before booking. Don't make the same mistake.

Chanell S.

Yelp
Lobby and common areas were amazing. The staff was proficient and friendly. The room was outdated and grossly beneath my expectations.

Morgan A.

Yelp
This hotel is overrated. No microwaves on property and we found gum under the bedside table. My husband did not like the limited breakfast, $23 fee but only used $10 worth and wanted to charge for a second plate. They also did not accommodate us for our honeymoon. For a hotel so expensive you would think they would have done better.

Emily H.

Yelp
Where to start, overcharged and underserviced. The only two people, bar lady and the breakfast lady were nice. My suite 1401, Wrangler suite, was less than that. Scalding hot water, balcony door wouldn't lock, dripping faucets from BOTH bathrooms. Jacuzzi bath didn't work either. When I told the lady at front desk about the issues she OFFERED TO DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. She gladly took my money didn't give a receipt and when I asked about the maintenance person she said nothing could be done. I would like my money back, wouldn't stay here again!!! This was a horrible surprise for our anniversary weekend!!!! My health and safety didn't matter with this company. Do not stay here.

Yelp
Great front desk staff, horrible unnecessary fees that didn't make sense especially since all of the amenities that were charged for were not used at all, therefore i think the fee should be refunded right at checkout or the amenities should be taken out of the incidental fee that is taken at check-in

Yelp
New management is obvious! Very disappointing. I have stayed at the Hotel Derek several times pre-Covid and have always had a lovely experience. I had a very different experience during my recent stay in 2024. Formerly a standout luxury boutique hotel in a sea of boring conference hotels, this hotel was my go to stay when visiting Houston. My recent stay was just as expensive, with a high resort fee and high parking fee (for an empty parking lot), housekeeping is by request only, the pool is not heated despite paying an additional fee for use, the refrigerator in the room did not work and the television was unable to connect to any apps, like netflix and hulu. I watched television on my laptop computer. This is a stay I would expect at a budget motel. Very disappointing and I am now on the prowl for a similar experience to the old Hotel Derek of the past.

Yelp
I stayed in this hotel just 2 years ago and it was amazing! However, this trip I just went on, was a disaster. The hotels website is so misleading. There is NO amenities. You can't even purchase a bottle of water in the hotel. The bar, pool and gym were closed. The front desk receptionist was asked about it and she stated "the new owners aren't sure what they are doing with the hotel so they aren't paying the permits to open the amenities". Our room was the ONLY thing that matched the pictures on the website. The refrigerator didn't work so we couldn't even drink the bottle of water we bought across the street at CVS the next day. The shower nozzle to turn it on was glued down so you could only take a bath. The hallways/elevators smelled of marijuana. So disappointing to see how fast a hotel went downhill in just 2 years. If you want anything more than 1 star, Hotel Derek is NOT the place for you. We paid way to much to have to go outside the hotel for EVERYTHING!

Yelp
This hotel looks nice from outside but rooms are dated. Shower didn't work well. Doors didn't close well. The bar was nice. Watch your charges!!! I stayed a night. The bartender was nice. I didn't use the pool or have breakfast. There were some decent places to walk to. I also didn't have a vehicle and I am glad. If I go back to Houston I would stay elsewhere!

Yelp
I mistakenly booked a non-refundable room and cancelled it within 24 hours. I was told I would get no refund, so I asked that I please have the room I booked back. I was told no, since I cancelled I couldn't have the room back. I asked for a credit for future use, and was told no I could not have that. I understand it was my mistake, but to charge me and not allow me to have the room seems completely unfair. Do not book this hotel!

Yelp
I do not know where to begin. This was a horrible experience. My daughter checked in first had to immediately get a different room due to uncleanliness. I arrive the next day, the room was still not to my expectations. I asked for the manager he was cordial he did get me in another room and added a $75 food credit. No store on site for water, snacks etc. I was told to go to CVS if I needed anything. I was advised it's under new management so hopefully it will get better. That's truly not an respectable response. I will not return as a travel agent this was far my worst experience!

Yelp
After a trip to Houston for a wedding this weekend my fiancé and I were pleased with our stay at Hotel Derek. Upon check in we thought it was a bit weird that they didn't accept one of our major credit cards but the checkin was quick and easy. Our room was clean and basic, nothing really crazy going on there but we did have some extremely noisy neighbors on Sunday night. I really wanted to write this review to hi-light our breakfast server, Alma, who was absolutely delightful and accommodating. I asked for Stevia for my cappuccino and they didn't have it so she took out a few packets from her handbag so I was able to enjoy my coffee. We would come back just for her!! I didn't get the bartenders name who worked there later in the afternoon (man bun, super sharp dresser), but he was fantastic as well. Our flight home was delayed several hours and the hotel allowed a very extended checkout for a small charge! We really appreciated that! Overall I would stay at this hotel again

Yelp
Gross. Didn't clean our room for 4 days. Asked everyday. Said they'd clean it while we were out. Every day. They didn't. Not even some clean towels/new shampoos as a consolation prize. This place parades like a nice hotel but is really just a fancy sleep and creep with all manner of weirdos leaving in the am on some EPIC walks of shame. I'd rather stay at a motel 6 or super 8. At least they're clean....

Yelp
The hotel use to be a hot spot, but the rooms have seen better days. My first room had a socket hanging out the wall and stains on the side of the bed. The second room was just okay, but the bathroom was falling apart. The staff was nice and they honestly can't do anything about the condition, management/owners need to do some serious renovations and deep cleaning. We ended up leaving and going to another hotel - The Intercontinental- same price better service and clean rooms. Leaving 2 stars for the staff that was polite and gave us a refund with out any issues

Yelp
Dirty, ghetto and moldy! Customer service was trash! Drinks at the bar watered down and overpriced! Oh and the bartender one know how to make the hotels "specialty drinks ".

Yelp
Hotel is nice but staff is not at all responsive. Got in at 830 and had to search for someone to check me in. No housekeeping so I tried to call to get coffee for the morning. 6 calls of no answer at the desk. Finally called from my cell phone. When they brought up they just opened the door and deadbolt stopped them. No knock. What if I hadn't bolted? They left and came back later and knocked. Just the worst.

Yelp
Do not stay here! It's dingy, dirty, and just gross. We tried to stay but the room they gave us had a dirty bathroom. The doors had paint chipping and looked like it had been kicked in by the police or a robber. The toilet literally had stains and so did the tub. The tub was also peeling.. we requested another room thinking it was one off and got the same thing. The walls were dirty like a child just smeared dirt on the walls. I don't understand why they were so dirty tbh. The room also looked dusty and dingy. I give one star as the front desk was accommodating and gave us another room when the first one failed us. Unfortunately, the 2nd room did too and they weren't surprised when we said we were leaving. They returned the charges and apologized it didn't meet our standards, because they knew it was raggedy.

Yelp
Sadly, I expected so much from a hotel that was near the galleria and presented itself as an excellent hotel. The moment I walked into my room the bathroom was filthy. I called down stairs and they were happy to move me to a new room. This is when everything went downhill, the new room given was utterly digesting. Bed wasn't made, trash all over the floor, just terrible. Once again I walked back down stairs to speak to someone. I was then given a 3rd room and free parking for my stay ( which wasn't helpful, considering the elevator was broke and to self park, you must park on the 6th floor or higher). Honestly had I not needed the hotel for its location, I wouldn't have stayed. Wouldn't go back if it's the last place to stay.

Yelp
This hotel was....meh. I've always dreamed of staying at this hotel. I was very disappointed. The lobby was nice and then that's where it ended. This is one of those hotels that looks nice at first glance. But then when you look closer it's dingy and old. Our room was nice. However, the minibar was not only empty but did not even work as a refrigerator. We had a call and ask for a new one which they brought up pretty quickly. They didn't have a cart so they brought it in on a rolling chair which I felt was weird. Also a room didn't have a microwave. When we called down to ask about it we were told we could rent one for $20. I thought this was very odd for our luxury hotel. Our hotel stay came with complimentary breakfast in the hotel restaurant. When we got there in the morning, the floor was so sticky everybody's shoes with sticking to it as they walked across it made a funny noise. Also, they made us pay a $200 deposit for a two-night stay which again I thought was weird for a luxury hotel.

Yelp
I don't recommend. The check-in time is, as I was notified, not guaranteed. So, at some point after 4pm, maybe you'll get a room you reserved?? Who knows when though, and they aren't responsible. Basically absent customer service. Oh, and there was the dated and dingy decor, rusty plumbing, and random hairs in the room. Oh, almost forgot about the broken shower faucet handle rendering the water lukewarm or sliding down to nuclear if not held. Just love being burned on vacation.

Yelp
First time in Houston and we decided to stay at this hotel. Honestly it was not a pleasant stay. The restroom smelled like rust so bad it was hard for me to even shower without gagging. The humidity of the shower and the smell of rust together was so strong and to top it off the tub took forever to drain. Hotels beds are uncomfortable as it is but this one felt so hard the pillows were as flat as cardboard. Next, the valet people drag ass to get your car. They told us to use the text service and when we did the car never came to so we asked the valet employees and they said don't text just come ask. They really got our car once and even at that it took forever so I should be refunded for that. The valet it self is an issue. The parking lot is so small. And the elevator to the garage didn't work so when we took our car out of valet it was another inconvenience. When we checked out there were people in the front ranting to check our bank account because they got charged fees for no reason. So I got a print out of my charges to be sure! I would recommend doing that. Most employees were friendly the bartenders were super friendly! That was the only good part about this place. I would not stay here again
