We were crushingly disappointed to stay at what we had thought to be a dream, ‘boutique’ hotel, but turned out to be more of a nightmare. Special occasion too: first time back in Aix for 25 years. In 2000, for our honeymoon, we’d stayed at Grand Hotel Roi René, and had admired the Augustins through the front door. At Augustins, our room was exceptional, but not at all in a good way. It was minimally clean, but with stains on the duvet, and the photo shows an old face mask found under the bed whilst tidying for checkout. Shower was a dribble, no shower curtain, with tens of dents in the bathtub. The ‘piece de resistance’ was mould found on the ‘fresh’ breakfast fruit - see photo. No complaint made during our stay; my wife preferred a quiet exit. We scarpered earlier than planned… after hastily cancelling/booking into the Roi René again, which didn’t disappoint. Lesson learned: boutique appearances can be deceptive. At €169 per night, we expected more; I’d like to know how it’s a 3* hotel.
