10 Epic Films to Inspire You to Visit Africa

"When we were road-tripping through Rwanda earlier this year we decided to visit the Hôtel des Mille Collines and were surprised to find that it is still one of the most beautiful and affluent hotels in Kigali; the film Hotel Rwanda depicts manager Paul Rusesabagina taking in thousands of refugees during the 1994 genocide while making it look like the hotel was operating as usual, and although the movie is not 100% factual it includes uplifting moments and showcases the resilience of the human spirit." - Matthew Kepnes

I had a short 1-night stay at the Hotel Des Mille Collines; famously known as "Hotel Rwanda" in the heart of Kigali. ||Upon entering, you definitely feel the historical significance of this landmark property. The pool area stands out with a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere, and it’s by far the highlight of the hotel. The front desk staff were warm and welcoming at first, which gave a good first impression.||Unfortunately, the service didn’t follow through. Despite arranging an airport taxi at check-in, we discovered the next morning that the request had not been processed. This caused unnecessary stress, though the night shift staff managed to get us into another taxi at last-minute.||The rooms and corridors are dated and worn. The bathroom and furniture feel like they haven’t been renovated since the 1980s. While everything was clean, the overall condition detracts from the comfort of the stay.||We had dinner at the hotel, and the steak was one of the toughest I’ve ever eaten. The meat seemed to be of good quality, but it clearly hadn’t been marinated or cooked with much care. It seems finding a good steak in Rwanda is a challenge. On the upside, breakfast at 6:00 AM—although officially starting at 7:00—was decent, with a fair selection already prepared and of reasonable quality.||Overall, this was an average stay with both highs and lows. I wouldn’t stay here again unless the hotel goes through a meaningful renovation.

We stayed at Hôtel des Mille Collines for one night before heading to Uganda, and it was the perfect stopover. The hotel is located in a safe and secure part of Kigali, about 25 minutes from the airport. Our room was large, very comfortable, and well-appointed—just what we needed after a long journey.||Dinner and breakfast at the hotel were both excellent. We especially enjoyed the fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as the variety of delicious local dishes.||Overall, Hôtel des Mille Collines was comfortable, welcoming, and convenient place to rest before continuing our trip. Highly recommended for travelers passing through Kigali!

We stayed briefly for a single night at the start of our journey around East Africa. This is a hotel with a lot of history, which made it interesting. And the views from the top of the hill are quite good. The restaurant by the pool was open late, which was appreciated after a long travel day and late evening arrival. Rooms are a bit dated and could certainly use an update, but we had everything we needed.

We stayed here for just 1 night as part of a group holiday experience and it would have been great to stay longer.|This historic hotel is well positioned but not grouped in with the international chain hotels around the convention centre. The lobby and pool areas are particularly attractive. We had a good buffet breakfast and found all staff friendly and helpful.

This historic hotel is renowned as the place where Paul Rusesabagina courageously sheltered and saved over 1,500 individuals during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, a story vividly portrayed in the film "Hotel Rwanda." While there is a plaque honoring the hotel staff who tragically lost their lives during this dark period, it would have been meaningful to see a tribute specifically recognizing Rusesabagina's heroism.||||The hotel itself, though somewhat dated, offers a charming ambiance and is impeccably clean. The staff are exceptionally friendly and accommodating. Dining at the main floor restaurant is a treat, with a menu featuring delicious local cuisine. The included breakfast is decent, highlighted by a nice omelette bar, though nothing particularly extraordinary. There is an incredible restaurant called Nyurah which is a short walk from the hotel we highly recommend.||||We stayed in a spacious and comfortable junior suite, though the shag carpet certainly felt like a blast from the past. The pool area is inviting, and the Friday night cultural show is a must-see experience. Overall, we found the hotel to offer great value for the price.

I'm confused by others' negative reviews. Our room was gorgeous, so maybe we got lucky and got a renovated room? Anyway, beautiful hotel and views in a great location. We had just come from 9 days of mediocre hotels and this was truly rejuvenating. A bit pricey but the service and amenities make it worth it if that's a priority for you. Only downside was the pool was not open at night which was a bummer.

We had dinner here twice in July 2025 mainly because of its history. Our meals were excellent and so was the ambiance. The service was great too.
