Overall, much to be happy with in this hotel. Its location is perfect, a hub for everything you might want to do. The architecture is charming, quaint but dignified, The hotel restaurant is very good, if a little prosaic. The reception/concierge/door staff are particularly friendly and helpful, while the serving staff are a little less so. Rooms are lovely as well as clean. I had a 5th floor balcony room to the side (which is over a U-shaped courtyard) giving me a half waterfront view and virtually zero noise. ||The MAJOR downside, especially if you are less than young and/or fit, is the lift. Yes, lift in the singular, an attractively picturesque old lift, the type with the open ironwork and manual door, which only allowed for 5 people at a crush with no luggage. only 2 people with luggage. Imagine meal times and check in/out times and you have quite a wait. That and many people didn't close the door properly meaning a delay while the doorman legged it up several floors to close it. As I was on the 5th floor and 70 years old, I couldn't just give up waiting (as most did) and use the stairs. There is another lift, but for staff only, apparently! They absolutely must rethink their spaces to allow for another, larger, lift if they want the return bookings that they otherwise deserve.||Other, much less significant comments, just to be alert for: The organisation of the admin and staff seemed at times a little inconsistent/haphazard. I do not appreciate waiting for longer than a minute to be noticed on arrival for a table, or if so, an apology please. At least half the time, orders were not delivered accurately, maybe no toast, maybe toast on my friend's plate instead of mine, maybe americano coffee instead of double espresso etc etc. Two separate guests said that their final bills were not accurate or not even theirs, and I had to ask for a print out of the bill in order to check, as it was not offered! A couple of small maintenance issues, not terrible, but the hotel should check. My basin plug/drain was partially blocked and was very slow to drain. Loads of pillows, very, very soft and suffocatingly soft, but none even medium firm. A light fitting didn't work. I'm sure if I'd alerted them they would have fixed those 3 little things, but I didn't want the intrusion. If that sort of thing bothers you greatly, then check on arrival.||As you can see, overall I gave 4 stars, although the lack of lift provision means that for elderly or less mobile people it might only rate 3. Having said all this, I would return to the hotel, but only if 2nd floor was available.
