The Hotel du Vin chains, as any magazine-trolling girl worth her salt knows, are constantly featured in the likes of Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and seem to be in wedding magazines every month.
They are a chain, but ohhhh, what a chain. In each city, the Malmaison group (who own the hotels) buy up properties with a good history, and generally keep the patina of the buildings.
The Hotel du Vin in Birmingham was the old Victorian-era Eye Hospital, and one can still see traces (and signs) of the old use for the building. It is located in the Financial District of Brum. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare in the week, but street parking is plentiful as long as the meters are fed. The Hotel offers valet parking for £20.
My husband and I had our wedding reception here, and the guests were so very impressed at our "amazingly posh" venue.
When guests enter the hotel, the restaurant is off to the right and the bar to the left. The foyer is all marble, gilt with tall dark marble columns, and the reception desk is discreetly tucked away to the right.
The lighting is low and ambient, and really sets the chic tone of the place. One of my favourite foyer features (yes, alliteration!) is the punched-metal lift -- very moderne, dear.
The rooms are delicious. Even the standard double that we saw had enormous dark wood wardrobes and plenty of room to walk around. The rooms are named after Champagne houses, not numbered.
One of the rooms' defining features is the bathroom -- large, two-person tubs and wet rooms, lovely gilt mirrors.
We stayed in one of the suites reserved for wedding parties/honeymoons, and all the sofas and armchairs were comfortable and tasteful. The bed, which I fell into exhausted at 2am was one of the most comfy hotel beds I've slept in.
Like most couples, we searched for months for the perfect venue. Though we are not strapped for cash, we did not want to splash out more than four figures for our venue and food.
Unfortunately, every venue we saw was pushing set menus and price-per-head fees on us. The menus were boring, typical and frankly, not worth the price.
Though the Hotel du Vin is one of the most sought-after wedding venues in the country, the wedding planner, Emma, sat down with us, and told us honestly that she could work with nearly any budget. She unfailingly found the right combination of offerings to suit our tastes and budget.
We had an afternoon wedding, and headed to the Hotel (in a pink cadillac!) around 6pm. Guests were greeted in the Atrium with a glass of champagne and strawberries.
The Atrium is one of the bookable areas of the hotel, and is as its name implies. With fun sculptures and comfortable wicker seating and two fountains, it's a spacious, light space. The roof is covered with mesh netting to ensure pigeons don't ruin your caviar, and the exciting feature is an all-glass ceiling that still allows gorgeous natural light should the British elements hound your event.
Because of the Cross-Pond union, we chose to serve guests a menu of afternoon tea -- finger sandwiches, cakes, savoury tarts and salad. The Hotel du Vin had 65 pages worth of menu options to suit all budgets and tastes.
After the tea, we headed downstairs to the Pub du Vin, which is held in the wine cellar. Gorgeously decorated like a Cigar club with yellowish walls, dark mahogany furnishings and dark leather, guests can look into the wine cellar and cigar stores, which adds a touch of class.
For the evening menu, we served "All-American" treats, including mini pizzas, mini burgers, BBQ wings, mini Cornettos and cheesecakes. It sounds naff, but it was all gourmet kind of stuff, with stilton and caramelized onions on the burgers, etc.
The bar staff and everyone we encountered was unfailingly polite and went above and beyond to help us out, during the reception and our subsequent stay.
The Art Nouveau decor of this place has to be seen to be believed. There are so many small touches and details, I felt like I was in Disneyland!
An absolutely amazing place to stay. If you want to sample the bar and see the decor without the price tag, they often do whisky and wine tastings and have live jazz in the Atrium.
